I just got the Shelford Channel from Sweetwater, and boy is it nice. I kept looking for reasons to say "Nah, this isn't for me. I could do this with these other pieces of gear..." but I can't part with it! It really packs a lot of features, and you can find 'different' but not better. Dual Shelford pre's would be awesome.
The 511 and 5211 hav the new Neve output transformer, but a transformer-LIKE amplifier (TLA) input stage. Though the 5211 looks like a Shelford pre, it is not. It's really a Portico Dual pre. The Shelford Channel has both input and output transformers. The new 5025 has the exact same preamp as the Shelford channel, no corners cut. Hope this helps
Hi Dewayne, great question! The short answer is that it is not advisable nor the correct product for the application - although it would likely pass the signal, the input levels would far exceed what this is designed for. I would recommend something like the Rupert Neve 542 Tape Emulator if you were trying to get that sort of sound on your mix bus. Thanks! Great sounding recording of an acoustic! I bought the 5211 at less than half the price. Ifaik it’s the same thing without the input trannys and a $2k price???
5211 definitely not the same. I have both the 5211 and now this 5025 and recorded side by side. The presence of the input transformer on the 5025 makes it have an extra “bump” in the lower frequencies, i.e. you feel the bass more. That is the characteristic imprinted by an input transformer. The more you increase the Gain knob the more you get of that “bump” in the 5025. Also the Silk, which is a feature of the output transformer is both Blue and Red on the 5025 and only Red in the 5211. Now you can push the silk to a 100% on both and the 5211 can get close to the 5025, but the 5025 will just have more of the harmonics distortion characteristic of the vintage transformers. The 5211 is considered more a transparent pre. However, with the addition of silk you can get some vintage imprinted into your sound, but only in the high frequencies (Red silk). Now it can be argued whether those two main differences are worth the extra $2K. At the end of the day is about getting that vintage sound characteristic into your recordings.
The main outputs are designed to capture a more pristine sound at high levels, avoiding any nonlinear coloration of the output stage. The -6dB outs let you more easily hit the transformer’s “sweet spot” of nonlinear harmonic content - which occurs when you drive the unit harder - without clipping most professional interfaces.
I think this device might be perfect if the HPF was replaced with a LPF or if the unit at least had both options on it. I mean, other than add "harmonics" with the "silk" control, there doesn't seem to be any way to roll off or scoop the top end frequencies.
@@chiefyovany572 That's not accurate. The 511 has the new Neve output transformer, but a transformer-LIKE amplifier (TLA) input stage. So does the Neve 5211. The Shelford Channel has both input and output transformers. The new 5025 has the exact same preamp as the Shelford channel, no corners cut.

The guitar recording sounds great- I record a lot of acoustic guitar and you can hear how good the preamps sound here
I like your music sensibility man good choice for demoing this impressive piece of gear. Thumbs up.
All hardwares from rupert neve design are Excellent, without compromise. I love it
Dope guitar skills. Love it !!!
Can I use this on my mix buss to run my whole mix through?

Of course! That is done all the time with various mic preamps. Check out the Louder than Liftoff Silver Bullet.
AMAZING
Oooh that sounded great Mitch
For 4k, they could have added a couple DIs. Especially since it would only cost them pennies per unit (literally) to implement.
DI's and line in's and they would have sold. but they only made 300 and theyre still on sale now years later
Pls compare with Neve 1073 , which is used for vocal , thank you
I'd love to hear this preamp on woodwinds!
Excellent product. Excellent review.

I was wondering the same, I have the 5211 too

@@jmed99 guess I’ll switch to ams neve better

Is it ?
How is this compared to the bae mpf?
Hey, curious me, what are those mics your using, by the way love the sound..like always excellent!
I wonder why would you want to use Negative -6dB output for what reasons?
The shelfords are particularly hot pres the negative 6 output helps with apollo interfaces and others that can't get to 0db

May I say first say… beautiful melodies. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👋🏼I see that to use this with an Apollo an XLR to TRS cable would be needed?

Four! Thousand! Motherflippin'! Dollars!
Any difference with the 511?
The 511 is literally the same as this.

This is great. Would get if I had $4k.
$4000 no thanks
Yep, just paying for the name. Ridiculous.
This should be priced at 2500 max
A tape machine can sound like that…

4k? Man thats steep.
Not even a DI for 4k, lol the company is brutal 😅
The best thing about this is I'll prob never get to own one.
$5000 title....dont even want to know the real price
edit: jokes aside, how does this compare with an avalon preamp? those really are nice sounding
mm mm mmmm!
4000$$$$$…..? Random guess
And it could be all yours for just $4k…… for a 2 channel preamp…..yikes!
1 channel
@@fashionlife5348 says 2 channel
@@citytonightproductions oh yeah u are right my bad I thought it was the shelford channel
Why is there no DI? Shame.
DI would be 5k lol
