Most of my fishing is freshwater and I have 5 of the original slammers. They’ve never let me down. They’re such a simple and well constructed reel and I think that they’re the best value for money reel by far. If I see them come on special in the future, I’ll buy another 5 of them. They’re that good.
Already bought a 4500HS and 8500DX Slammer 4. Just waiting on there release/shipping sometime this month cant wait. Great video much love from the Florida Keys
Awesome, so good to get comments from Florida Keys. I'm sure you will like the new models, I'm pretty excited about them. Were still in lockdown so I cant wait to get on the water and test them thoroughly.
Thanks for the video! Im still using my 260, 360 and 560 bought many, many years ago and haven’t had an issue yet. I do like the look of the new slammer 4 though and might pick one up just for the hell of it. Thanks again!
enjoyed the trip down memory lane and many good years with Penn. From the info I got from Penn regarding The Slammer lll, the reel was optimally designed for tossing lures vs bait fishing. Optimal applications being lures in the heavy surf, lures off the jetty in rough waters, and for vertical jigging off a boat and kayak. Bait anglers particularly live bait anglers found the minimal drag setting perhaps to tight. As noted by the massive drag, the target species were also large fish where the tighter minimal drag would not be a huge concern. That being said, I have seen this reel used for everything even for throwing a crab snare, used to snag paddlefish and that type of fishing and downrigger fishing. Lots of applications where the minimal drag is not a big issue. With The Slammer 3 there were a few heads up including the top plate with hydrophobic and for those doing self service not to grease. Slammer 3 can be found for $150.00 range and for the features its quite the deal considering the Slammer 4 is $350 at best at top discount stores
Thanks !! Yeah great advice. Should start warming up soon so hopefully wont have to worry about using the spare handle until next winter chasing some gummies.
Great review, I thought maybe you needed to add the weight comparison but a quick google search I guess could solve that! Your content is exceptional and your channel is so underrated... you deserve way more than 15.1k subs IMO 👍
Thank you so much for the kind feedback, its really greatly appreciated. The weight comparison is a strange one as I've spoken with Penn directly and im assured that the updated rotor design has made the new slammer 4 reels lighter yet when you compare weights from slammer 3 to slammer 4s there about the same, yet in the hand they somehow feel a tad lighter. Thanks once again,
Thanks for that mate I had the option of getting a 3 Vs 4 today for 70 bucks so happy now I went for the 4!😬 Yesssss! I got the 10500 for trolling I'm so excited
The drag clicker on the original Slammer is by far the best, The metallic 'ting' it makes on each click makes it sound just so beefy. The other 2 sound too plastic-ish. Wonder how many anglers upgrade or select reels based on drag clickers. On that note, the new Daiwa 21 Certate drags are something else. Thanks for the upload Alan, keeps our sanity levels slightly in check.
Thanks Matthew !! Yeah I find it amazing how the drag clickers on many of the older reels are often louder. I must admit i often check the drag sound as it does make the experience even more exciting listening to a reel scream. Thats really good to hear about the 21 certates as a few have said the drag sound on the certate LTs were very quiet.
Thanks man !! Yeah they were super impressive. You 100% need a couple of bigger reels when we chase the gummies and kings. The 6500 is a great size for that. The Slammer 3s are also selling super cheap at the moment and also worth a look.
Geez they look the goods and that drag rating is off the charts. My cousin's husband has lived his whole life on the water. a mad fisherman who owns 3 boats. Thanks !!! All brilliant points that you make and I believe that 100% with your cousins husband. Yeah I have used the Penn reels off and off for saltwater and have a few mates who use them regularly. I've always been a massive Shimano fanboy for any saltwater offshore reel, but these Slammers are really good. There a tad heavier than some of the competitors products but in return there all metal construction and the drag capacities are crazy good. .Thanks for watching and the excellent comment.
Great video man!! In my opinion, if you already have a Slammer 3 That’s works good, I don’t see a reason for you to switch/upgrade to the Slammer 4. It’s literally almost the same thing just in a redesigned body/chassis. That’s just my view on it lol.

Hi Mario, thanks for the comment !!! Hello Alan, Nice review. I need a little help :) I want to buy new Penn Slammer reel for tuna fishing, but hesitate between two models, Slammer III 8500HS and Slammer IV 8500 DX. My question is about braid capacity, this info from internet about slammer III 8500HS is true? Can spool with 760 yards of 65lb braid, this is awesome capacity? When i check regular model Slammer III 8500 braid capacity is 555 yards of 65lb braid? This mean that is not same spool size on 8500 and 8500HS? I would be grateful to hear your opinion, which model best to choose. Braid capacity for diferent models: 1. SLAMMER III 8500HS Braid Capacity yd/lb:955/40 805/50 760/65 2. SLAMMER IV 8500 Line Capacity Braid (yds/lb): 730/40 • 600/50 • 555/65 3.SLAMMER IV 8500 DX Braid Capacity yd/lb:730/40 600/50 555/65 Thanks in advance!
Yeah the specs for the Slammers are pretty crazy. Thsi is the specs they have advertised www.pennfishing.com/products/slammer-iii-spinning-1403987?variant=34036244709516 and the line capacity on all models is very high. I have the 6500 and can fit about 300M of 40lb no problems and the 8000 are significantly bigger and more capacity. In terms of HS vs normal vs DX sometimes you really need to go into a tackle store and feel for yourself. I would say that the Slammer 3's are going for bargain prices right now and there isnt a huge difference between the 3 and the 4, so thats the best value option. The DX still not available in many countries although they have slightly higher specs

Majorcraft Solpara 1002H rod 60-100g is a really nice rod, out of that list I would recommend either the Slammer 4 or Saragosa SW-A. I find the water proofing technology better in those reels, and they feel really nice in the hand. You could also consider the new twin power which is also an excellent choice. I use a 8000 and 100000 size quite a bit but thats jigging for species like kingfish. I hope that helps

Thats sounds super exciting in that case I would 100% go with the bigger model reels either the slammer 8,500 or 10,500 which would cover the 40lb and 300m of line no problems or you could even go up the scale to something like a Saragosa SWA 14,000 or 18,000.

Many of us asked them to improve the small amount of flaws on the slammer 3. The company listened to us and gave us what we wanted. I call that brilliant customer service .
I own three of the original slammers all live liners and the only con is on the 560LL v Has not so good line lay but my 760LL does just fine I also have a slammer 3 3500 and the only con to it is that they make no live liner in it🤷♂️ So why are baitfeeders not worth making anymore at one time penn made a half a dozen liverliner reels now they only make two🤦♂️ im not too happy with where penn is going with this and I will not own another spin fisher 6 so I only go with the old slammer live liner or an Avet leverdrag mc conventional reel
not worth the upgrade; i really didn't understand what Penn was doing with this release. Unless Penn haven't released all the information the Slammer 4 is pretty much identical to the Slammer 3. I'll wait and see if they change anything with the Slammer 5. i think i would've destroyed my Slammer 3's by then.
