I just fi ished this book yesterday. I couldn't put it down, and I read it in about six hours. However, the ending was so anticlimactic. It was way too too rushed and it left way too many loose endings and unanswered questions. I wonder if the author was hurrying the ending to fulfill a deadline?

Do we know if the 3 girls ever found out that Rachel was their sister?

How did Maddie have access to the attic? I'm so confused. Jack really struggled opening the door with the key. And it was blocked when they first opened it. So confused. I assume there was more than one key then? But it still doesn't make sense to me

hell in yeah that’s a really good point! I may have to go back and try to reread the end just to see if any of those questions were answered. Not a fan of the ending at all haha

She climbed in through the window to the attic! In the final email from Ellie it says “she kind into the attic window” - a mistranslation from the speech-to-text function she uses to write. A couple times when Rowan/Rachel describes the attic, she mentions the small window that no one could fit through. But a child would be small enough to!

@@kassidywoytek6785 But what about the old phone? How was it able to have the Happy app if it was so old?

Kairo it’s just an older model smartphone. She mentions having the same model “a few years ago” and having to hold down the volume and power buttons to turn it on, like you do for an iPhone.

SPOILERS! What was the deal with the feathers in the attic? The attic in general really, was she meant to find it? Why was there a crib and the smell of death? What was her theory on what was happening to her in the end? (She said something about a father who loved his daughter so much that it killer her)Did she send the letter to her lawyer or not?

Lol sooo many outstanding questions! It’s been so long since I’ve read it that I unfortunately don’t have any answers for you but I was very frustrated with the ending in general!

What happened to her in the end? Why didnt the letter get mailed?

*SPOILER* My personal take on this was that she had died or been put to death and never sent the letters because Ellie asked her not to tell and she honored her sisters request and hid them in the wall of her cell.

Agreed, I think she received the letter from Ellie right before she was about to send the letter to her lawyer, and decided against it to protect her.

So I just finished listening to the audiobook, which was read very well and I'd highly recommend, and I wanted to hear other readers' reactions to the book and look whose video popped up! 😉. I thought you were spot on with your review. I also really did enjoy this book, but was kinda let down with that ending. And while it wrapped up everything nicely, I too came away not really believing that to be a realistic conclusion. However, I still gave it 4 Stars as I really did enjoy the atmospheric writing and the slow, creepy build up. And I genuinely liked our protagonist in this story and felt connected to her.

Mano I’m so glad you enjoyed it!! Yeah when I look back on this it does feel more like a 4 star read, I was just so mad in the moment at the ending that I probably rated in .5 stars lower than I should have haha but totally agree that the creepy atmosphere was sooo well done!!

Thank you for the review. I keep hearing that people are disappointed in the ending. After hearing so much about it, i think I will pass, although it sounds like it had a lot of potential!

Kristine Sader definitely a lot of potential and it was a fun read, just no payoff at the end 😭

You did the right thing, even though it fully explained what happened we still don’t know what ultimately happened to the characters and it’s frustrating and the ending it’s kinda hinting at it’s super heartbreaking.

The ending ruined it for me,I gave it a 3 stars because of that. I know it’s an average rating but I always hate having that disappointed feeling at the end. Other than that everything was really good and I would have given it a higher rating. 🙁

    SPOILER ALERT
Well actually, I enjoy the book very much. The ending doesn’t bother me.
I knew that those kids are sinister and they were not “too young” to be the real culprit.
I like the open ending. I assumed that Rowan got death sentence, she never sent the letters to protect Ellie.
I didn’t see it coming. About Rachel, Bill and then Ellie. Really enjoy the twist.
Also the writing made me hooked. I know it’s epistolary novel without realising it while reading. Great execution tho.
