Why You Might Struggle To Buy a JCB

  • Roger takes a break from ranting and raving to celebrate one of Britain's biggest building industry success stories.
A word from Lord Bamford - Chairman
The story of JCB is one of innovation, ambition and sheer hard work. From small beginnings building agricultural tipping trailers in 1945, to the global force in manufacturing the company has become today, JCB has constantly pushed the boundaries in our desire to be the best. My father and company founder Joseph Cyril Bamford’s motto was, “Jamais content”, and that is exactly right - we are never content with our achievements. But I believe that even he would be amazed by what the company has become. Today, we have 22 plants on four continents and more than 750 dealers around the world.
These are exciting times. In just 75 years we have gone from one man in a garage in Uttoxeter to a major global brand renowned for its pioneering spirit. All of this is down to our people - an 11,000-strong worldwide force that makes up the JCB family we are so proud of. Our achievements over the past 75 years have been considerable, but at JCB we believe in always looking ahead to the next development, the next level of success. As we speak, JCB is continuing to innovate and push the boundaries in research and development; in particular within the area of sustainability, where energy costs and emissions are becoming an increasingly important purchasing consideration. Many of our customers will need to reinvent their businesses to meet new building standards and emissions legislation, and we will be there to support them every step of the way, as we have always been.
Read through the innovation milestones over the decades on the JCB timeline:

@@SkillBuilder Holding shares in a secretive foreign holding company to avoid paying UK tax on the profits is not the same as investing in foreign companies. If you make a profit on your foreign stock - let's say Apple - you pay tax on it in the UK when you take your dividend and capital gain. Not so if it's a notional holding company in a tax haven.

In 2020, JCB received a £600m loan in emergency financial aid from the UK government, during the coronavirus pandemic, despite its ultimate ownership being in the Netherlands and having reported a record £447 million profit the previous year. Its chief executive Graeme Macdonald said: “Although not a public company, we are eligible for CCF because of our contribution to the UK economy. We don’t expect to utilise it in the short-term but it gives us an insurance policy if there is further disruption from or second spike or other impact around the world.”

100% right Roger Joey Bamford fell out with the family Bamfords Agricultural Machinery firm in Uttoxeter for being too set in their ways . He fitted a multi axis hydraulic ram control back hoe and front end loader in 1945 and over time put existing drag link winch excavators like Ruston Bucyrus makes out of business. My Aunt lived close to Joey and went out with him for a while in 1939, had they married I would be a lot better off financially today !! Their factory in Rocester is just over the Staffs border in to Derbyshire right from the start was ultra modern low level set in to the landscape in dark green to blend in to the surrounding open countryside everything about them has always had an ethos of high quality. Son Anthony is in charge Joey having passed away in 2001.As you say a major example of British innovation design and quality. Quite right to bring it to attention - we also have a great many brilliantly inventive companies in UK.

@@aulonocarazrus17 Interesting points. I would say that the market has driven itself to the absolute bottom.
It's all about cheap, cheap, cheap.
I've spoken to high ups at some of the world's best manufacturers and asked them point-blank why are they destroying their brand by going low quality AND trying to maintain price. It's a recipe for disaster.
The simple answer I was given: people ain't interested in paying proper money for a quality product anymore.
I reckon most people (myself excluded) who go on about quality simply are not prepared to pay for it.
The problem now is that due to China feeding our greed, quality brands are being hit hard.

I said in a previous video that I don't cultivate friends and saying you support Brexit is a surefire way of losing a few. However, it comes to the point where hiding your views feels cowardly. I have been completely amazed by how many 'so called' intelligent people don't actually support or believe in democracy. In the original referendum, which resulted in remain, there were a great many lies told about the E.U having no political dimension and just being about trade, and as a result a great many people voted to stay in.
Now those people accuse the leave campaign of lies but to their credit the people on the losing side of the argument 40 years ago accepted the defeat and got on with life. That is how life has changed over the last 40 years.

Oh dear you are not going to drag up that old arguement again. Surely you can see that nobody is cut off and we will continue to trade with Europe, just as we have for thousands of years.
If you know anything about economics you will know that protectionism (which is what the E.U is wedded to) has a negative effect and whenever it has been tried it always fails. It may take a while for people to wake up to that fact but it is inevitable.
Did it do anything to halt the progress of China or save our manufacturing? The Euro zone is dying on its arse and all they can do is print money. We know where that ends.

    • @Trevor_Austin

I know. It’s a shame. We’ll just have to complete with South Koreans, Japanese, Chinese and Indians on equal terms.
