  • Post Office (GPO) machine that makes planting telegraph poles much easier, Bletchley, Buckinghamshire.
    M/S large green lorry pulling over on grass verge. It has a large mechanical crane device on top and telegraph poles. Various shots of two men in yellow hard hats operating machinery on back of lorry. M/S of man pulling lever to lower telegraph pole from lorry. M/S of man hammering in nails into side of pole.
    C/U and M/S of large drill or boring device being lowered. C/U of lever being pulled by workman to operate drill. Several C/U's of pole planter making large hole in the ground. The drill is then lifted out. C/U of man's hand pushing lever. Various shots of men operating crane like machinery to put the pole into hole.
    M/S's of man using shovel to throw soil back in hole while the other worker uses an hydraulic tamper to pack the soil down.

    I well remember the first time I saw one of these ingenious machines working to put in a new pole outside my house when i was a child, the chaps working it were very friendly and explained everything to me about how it all worked, they also told me it was called a Polecat, never forgot that, and I'm in my fifties now !, been fascinated with everything mechanical and electrical my whole life to date

    No such luxuries in our PO area in the sixties. We had to manhandle a pole upright. Also can’t believe that engineer is wearing a tie. T1 or T2A?
