Tail Vise Build - PART 2

  • Now that I have the wooden parts of the tail vise wagon roughed out, I'm going to add the screw that makes this vise work, and I'm using an inexpensive barbell with spinlocks on it. It comes in a box with the bar in three pieces. Probably not the best design for a barbell, but for me, what it means is two lengths of 1-inch Acme threaded rod, with a raised stop at the end of the threads, and a knurled handle, and two spin locks. That's enough for two vises for this bench build. The center section of the bar isn't required for the build, so I've set that aside for now.
I'm also using a 1/4-inch thick plate washer I found on a construction site. Its 3-inches square, and punched with a 3/4-inch hole. This will be the split washer inside the wagon, so I need to bore a hole in the back section of the wagon, and a counter-bore in the front for the end of the threaded rod where it projects through the split washer. Then I just need to modify the end of the barbell to fit the split washer.
What's up next? I need to build the housing and rails the wagon sits in, and for that I need some stock, and that stock probably needs t acclimate to the shop so I'm not sure what the next video will be, but once the stock is acclimated, I'll get to work on the next part of the vise.

Beautiful work. Where did you get that plate washer? I'm working on a similar project and need that exact piece. Lots of thinking went into this project and you are to be commended. Thanks

Thanks Roy. The plate washer is a spare I found on a construction site. It was designed for an anchor bolt holding down a steel column base plate. I'm sure it could be fabricated from 1/4-inch steel, but having the hole there was easier for me as I don't have a lot of metalworking tools.

@@moonlightsnowfall6734 Thanks for the reply. I did some looking when you said "Construction Site". Found a couple at L owes and Home D. I ordered two from 3 gage steel (roughly 6 mm or 1/4") They came in a 5/8" hole at Lo's and a 1/2" hole at HD. I ordered from HD and just will redrill the hole to 3/4". I'm building a tilting bench with a vise similar to the obsolete B/W workmate. I'll be using a 1" wooden screw instead of the metal screw. Thanks again. Love that bowtie retaining clip. Clever?

@@royalmaroad5639 Glad you found something. Bow tie clever vs. needlessly complicated? The original design called for installing the spin nut in the middle of the wagon, so the wagon would move along a fixed screw. Since I changed, that the reasons for the split wagon are probably less clear, but I decided to stick with it and mount the split washer there in the hope that it help prevent the wagon binding. Like all first workbench builds, I assume I'll learn everything I should have known by the time I'm finished.
