I heard that: There's a new car assembly plant starting in Wellington creating 100s of jobs. We are taking back our Forestry industry which will also create 100s of jobs. There's a big push for apprenticeship schemes in the construction industry straight out of highschool. Healthcare are starting on the job training and studying part-time. NZ Rail are going to operate more daily national services giving better access to smaller towns, creating tourism and more jobs. Sounds good? Well that's where we were 40 years ago.

I know we can achieve it so long as we are united as a country and strive towards this common goal. If China over years of closing the iron curtain can do it, why can't we, if Japan can pick herself up after 2nd world war, why can't we, if Taiwan despite the geograhical risks can achieve economic success and can even have their own army to fight off China in wanting to be independence why can't we, look at Vietnam, look at their Indonesia, Singapore. It sheer determination and hard work, focus and no nonsense that get these countries to where they are and continue improving.

Watch Bryan Bruce's doco "Mind the gap". It's from 2013 so a little old now but details how prosecuting beneficiaries is a waste of resources and does more harm than good. White collar crime such as tax evasion costs the NZ economy 100's of times more $. If Seymour gets his way and govt departments have limited staff and resources then I would prefer them to after the big fish (tax evaders over beneficiaries). I'm not saying I condone people staying on benefits longer than they need to, I don't - but if we're going to cut down on waste then we're doing it wrong by this policy.

When facts, and proof, and research, and lived experience shows this not to be the case - and what you say is more the problem.... Why would we waste time punishing those who most need help for the sake of saving the country maybe $50m a year? I ask Kiwis “who doesn’t know people on the unemployment benefit who could be working?” .. as a 63 year old Kiwi, I have come across many people who have been on unemployment benefits for years..generational … so this is a very important process to help, even push those people, who quite often have lost the confidence and self responsibility to get back to work. It DOES work.. I have seen it through previous government forms of sanctions; parents finally back at work, which then enables their children to go to school and therefore stop that generational cycle of living by benefits, school truancy and the evolution of extremely young single mothers/dads with few work/life skills…. Work enables self esteem and being an involved community member of our society. Willing non participation does require tough love.

What about the transport parking or Broadband (if wfh)that they may need as well as every day needs that would motivate them to stay employed? I still believe there should be some manakitanga. Jack seems to be ignoring the fact that these people who are reaching the red light level are bloody mindedly not getting on board and paying their way. This is assuming they don’t have mental health issues, which shouldn’t come into this plan.

You assume much. A 17 year old living with family in the back blocks of Opotiki with no car and no transport will not have the same opportunities as a university graduate living in Mt Eden. A 52 year old, wheelchair bound woman will not have the same opportunities as a healthy, fit 25 year old man. In neither circumstance should they be treated the same. The issue with draconian edicts is they lack subtlety and do not take into account the complexities of the human condition. To say it's just bloody mindedness is akin to being judge and jury...

I agree with a differentiated support structure. One size fits all has huge gaps that people fall through. But isn’t the traffic light system designed to offer this support at the lower levels? And perhaps people need to move to where there are more opportunities. This is not uncommon. I had to do this myself. The first priority must be to find employment and contribute to society. It’s unacceptable (I think) to rely long term on others for financial support without even attempting to move yourself forward. Again I’m a strong supporter in prioritizing mental health support (both social and financial) for those who are struggling.

Well it’s (in my view) better than the status quo which creating generations of welfare dependent communities. I’m both a teacher and a parent and I can personally vouch for bottom line tough love with appropriate support. Some people will not change if there’s an easier option, it’s human nature. What’s needed is both pressure and an unconditionally positive approach to support. This legislation may not yet or ever be perfect but it’s a step in the right direction. Unemployment surged under labour and I think the current government has the right approach to this and the wider NZ economy.

@@paddymccaughan7712 It appears that you have never been on the other side of the fence. I have. It's soul destroying. A constant fear that comes with having no resources. It got to the point of being down to almost nothing apart from one bag of rice in the cupboard. No savings. One mistake away from not being able to buy food that week. Nothing for any sort of new clothing, let alone shoes. Praying that what you do have holds together. Hoping you have enough for the power bill when it inevitably arrives. So you go about applying for jobs you are not suited to, and will never actually get due to a lack of experience. Or too much. Or there were "many high quality candidates". Whatever excuse HR provides you, if you're lucky enough to get any kind of response at all. And when you do get an offer, it might only be part time, and with expenses are no better off. To make things worse, if it doesn't work out - or you get to the end of the proposed 90 day trial.... you're back. This time with a stand down. Now add sanctions to the mix. It's cruel and unusual and less than effective. It plays well to the nasty, cruel and somewhat racist underbelly of NZ, and appears to be not much more than a vote gathering exercise. I appreciate you have a more nuanced view than most, but hitting people already down with a bigger stick isn't an effective solution to a complex problem. Put another way, that appropriate support you mention, that's what needs to be looked at. Not just breaking out the whip because of "reasons".

@Jack.. What do you have to say to all those taxpayers who work so hard to meet the inflation, raising cost of living, support their families & at the same time contributing a huge portion of their income towards tax! Looks like your channel is more interested in giving benefits to those lazy people who do not wish to work or take any steps to find a job. I think its the right time to learn personal responsibility, learn to live on their own by start going for work, rather than eating & sleeping all the time.
