Hi Mike! I can see how you've got yourself all confused. It's pretty easy if you aren't paying attention or indeed, think for yourself.
See, when the previous govt introduced the name change, the opposition lost their collective minds, mainly pointing at THE COST of the change.
So, now that they are the govt and are proposing another name change, logic would dictate that a question of cost must be asked.
Otherwise (and here in lays the kicker, get ready, you wont like it) it EXPOSES THE HYPOCRISY OF NATIONAL ETC when they cried about the cost initially.
      Do you understand now?

    • @jaywontdart
      @jaywontdart 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Consider: initially names were changed to be more inclusive. Cost wasn’t a reason to change the numbers to be more New Zealand specific.
But cost is brought up now, because the whole point of the new government is cutting costs, cutting spending, and I would argue, cutting essential services. All sorts of things are getting cut - even the phase out of smoking! We want to get new customers hooked on smoking cigarettes, just for tax revenue, to fund my incoming $20.05 a week taxcut…..
So: if this new government is so fixated on money and cutting services, cutting costs…..but then spends millions on new signage? That looks like a vanity project. It looks like the cash strapped guy spending $1000 on a personalised plate for their old clunker car, just so it says his name “PHIL” on the front :-)
It looks like a waste of money, for very little gain.

Clearly even amongst the protestors as they disagree with the English version. So sure they have started some conversation, correct.
But I’m not sure what they are protesting about. This government has said it will look at clarifying how the treaty is interpreted so discussion will be able to be had as part of that process. No outcome has been determined yet. Literally nothing has happened other than a bunch of people catastrophizing about what might happen.
They have only been in government what two or three weeks now and already those that didn’t get who they wanted in government are spitting the dummy like children.
Individual behaviour and action is what will fix this country. Not the government of the day. People need to be better individuals. Chloe’s argument about not ceding sovereignty is based on the idea that Maori were able to be duped when the treaty was written and signed. I think that’s a bit far fetched considering they had been trading for decades with the many different nationalities that had bothered to sail here. The old chiefs who signed need to be given a bit more credit that actually they knew what they were up to.
I think a great display at Te Papa would be to have 20-30 independently translated versions of the existing texts so we could get an idea of the range of differing interpretations. Like everything there’s going to be more than one view

    • @OldOneTooth

By estimates of the missionaries based on the number of warriors of each hapu 500,000 Māori, even low estimates based on cook sailing around the coast 100,000 (Hawaii had 500 000) versus a few thousand Europeans concentrated in a few trade ports.
The same chiefs had declared independence 5 years earlier for the pragmatic reason of having a flag and getting trade recognition to avoid ship seizure.
Though the English draft talked about sovereignty, the Māori draft put forward and signded didn't.
Politics in England, between England and France, and English captains competing for berths desperately naming everything for their sponsors at admiralty may have spun it but no sovereignty was ceded.
The call for a treaty resulted from Hobson's earlier visit to provide security for the few thousand settlers, probably why he left his family in Australia at first and sleep on ship (especially given his carribean experiences) Britain didn't want the expense of troops but also wanted to break free of the control of chiefs like Hone Heke which is why the moved the capital further south, sort and got the protection of Waikato chiefs who placed Auckland under their Korowai.
So no they didn't cede sovereignty. The settlers had autonomy but were under the protection and good will of the local hapu. By now we'll armed and experience d.
Things change as the numbers of settlers rise and pass those of Māori in different localities, especially in the South Island as wars of colonization are fought and governors use local allies and fabricate threats to get English troops and use them to break the power bases of the strongest tribes.
It's only after this Māori are brought into settler government as their power base, land and population shrinks as women and children are slaughtered, starved and forced off lands, breaching the treaty in a similar way to treaties being signed and broken in the US.
So what we have is hapu who never ceded sovereignty, but had it taken at gunpoint in breach of a treaty, who now have a growing population of Māori many who can also whakapapa to Europe and a settler government whose numbers advantage of those who can't whakapapa to Māori is kept only by constant top up from migration.
One way or another Māori voice will be heard at local government level from the hapu, and national level.
New Zealanders will increasing share a Māori identity, mixed with a that of other heritages.

There is only one treaty, it is called Te Tiriti. If you have any confusion around this then google Contra proferentem. It is a rule of contract interpretation that states an ambiguous contract term should be construed against the drafter of the contract. The term contra proferentem is derived from a Latin phrase meaning “against the offeror.”

@@CHCHNZ461 Thanks. Christmas got better when my mother realized we didn't care about stuff like that. As we get older though you do begin to care about things like the treaty because it's about fairness. The effect of living in a world you see as being unfair can be an extreme hardship. I own my home but every election cycle it's a burden listening to the anti Māori rhetoric. Reality is that you're right, for a lot of kids just having a meal is far more important and I have never actually benefitted from any treaty settlement anyway, but I do hope these kids will grow up in an environment where they are not hated.
