I also appreciate Chuck’s neutral approach: when FSD does something stupid you call it out and when it does something well you’re genuinely excited about it, thank you, good Sir.
Almost did it for me today. It got most of the way and said there was an obstruction. Anyway, 7 hour drive from central NC to Hilton Head Island today with zero interventions (3 that I’m not counting because they were my fault) It’s awesome. My FSD and another car were merging into the same lane and FSD smoothly handled it by switching back. Also, on my 2nd supercharging stop, it turned too early in the parking lot and realized it was stuck so it reversed and turned around and went the right way. My wife decided the car needed a name today.
I was rear ended in my 2022 Model Y while in FSD at a yellow light full stop. Yes, not my fault but the car was totaled. When I took it into the Tesla collision center they told me that was the most common damage that they see by a large margin. I think Tesla FSD team needs to focus on this trend and train on rear end accident mitigation. I am now hyper sensitive to hard breaking and have intervened a few times to push through a yellow light or give more space for the car behind me to stop. Nothing like having a NEW Tesla after an accident!
13.2.1 has been incredible for me. So near perfect that my two minor nits might just be personal preference. One is that for me, it pulls up too close to lead cars at stops/traffic lights. I like to leave some slack so I have an out if I see someone barreling toward me in the rearview and I have a turn lane to escape in. The second is that it often pulls right up to the edge of a crossroad even when visibility doesn't require it. I'd prefer to not be inches from 60 MPH cross traffic when it doesn't gain you any visibility advantage.
Those are both great points, not a just a whimsical personal preference, but rather a reasonable driver behavior. How’s speed control for you on city streets, do you feel like it has been resolved?
I could imagine a future where the passenger in the robotaxi can select the speed profile for the car. I’d imagine that, just like a regular driver, Tesla could choose to make the car speed when the speed of traffic is faster than the limit, and go the speed limit otherwise
Insurance / liability: No matter who your insurance carrier is, Tesla will be liable, so it's mandatory that they are also collecting the premium. The other possibility is that a non-tesla insurer has a 3rd party insured or reinsurance deal with Tesla..
I suspect given Musk comments, and the time it took to get the last version optimized from hw4 to fit on hw3, that hw3 no longer will get the major FSD updates. The rapid analysis may not be possible; the camera resolution may be too little, who knows, perhaps the dynamic range too. The question may really be whether full autonomy comes to hw4, or turns out to need hw5. But someone knowledgeable inside Tesla could weigh in.
Robotaxi will be at least on AI5 or better! No doubt. If FSD could be solved on HW4 they wouldn’t be talking about AI5. fingers crossed for retrofit option.
@@alexp.6406 what do you mean? Did we stop improving cars at the moment of introducing belts? Until people are dying and there's something else to gain, the cycle will keep going. AI4 is not perfect but by all means it seems sufficient. So having improvements in mind... power consumption went from 40-50W on AI3 to 200W on AI4. This alone could be more efficient while chip itself being even better on AI5. So many angles to look at it from.
Hey Chuck, Try to think of Standard profile as "go with the flow". I think that can be a great personality most of the time. I avoid getting into Hurry mode, but will switch to Chill mode about 2 miles from my Interstate exits. Mostly, as in life, I "go with the flow".
If the "taxi" (unsupervised) encounters an emergency, e.g. taking a seriously injured person to the hospital, the taxi can honk and turn on the emergency flasher, etc. A hint of abuse should be confirmed. Then the taxi can exceed regulations in order to get the person to their destination quickly and safely.
With all these new updates and improvements, do you think HW 4 is enough for true unsupervised FSD (L4) or do you believe more cameras are still required?
Thank you for mentioning HW3. We feel so let down by Tesla right now. FSD 12.5.4.2 is SO bad, and we've been stuck with this version for weeks. I regret spending $12K upfront. People leasing a newer cars and subscribing for $99/month only are treated better than us early adopters.
If hurry mode is selected, it should persist till you change the mode or get out of the car. There is a reason you selected that mode. Proximity to destination is irrelevant.
Do you ever think we’ll get hold mode while in FSD? Something I’ve been thinking about. Separately, do you know how far FSD looks ahead down the road? I’m curious to see in future if we’ll start slowing down sooner to avoid more friction brake use. Thanks chuck!
HW4 Model 3 here still stuck on FSD 12.5.6.4. Performed pretty terribly on the highway for me today when showing it off to family for the first time. Wish Tesla would just send v13 out wide.
Looking on Google at that intersection at 41:00, it's a bit of a hot mess. There are dashed lines for some directions, suggesting it wasn't clear to some drivers. FSD may have come up with a better intersection design for it than the traffic engineers... Just sayin'
I think for unsupervised driving Tesla will have to have some driving profiles that will be clear that it will speed and if it gets a ticket its the humans fault since it has other options to follow the speed to the tee. Thats my guess.
Most of you guys have set speed plus 40%. What increments can you move that? In Spain 10% over would be too high. 6 to 8% would be max I would use, can you adjust in single digits?
That Austin Powers U turn gives me faith that teleoperators will basically not be needed at all. Maybe there will be 1 per State. Certainly for Florida less than 100 right?
I feel that once wide scale teleoperation is a non-starter due to connectivity limitations alown. Also, a remote takever lacks situational awareness. One thing that weighs heavy on my mind is the Cruze accident where the car hit a pedestrian and then dragged them. I have always suspected that the dragging was done by a teleoperator since its action was to pull over for the accident. I think the cars will need to be fully able to do it all. I don't feel that a teleoperator can make the right judgment calls or fully understand the scenario with 2 exceptions. Exceptions: 1. Someone is always watching, like serious 1 to 1 at all times. 2. No 'jumping in the seat' remotely should be immediately available. I feel at a minimum the takeover driver must watch at least the last 10 minutes of the cars drive. 5 min at 20x plus 4 min at 10x plus 1 min at 2x, or something similer, that would give the remote operator a full picture of the senario.
I would like to see AI5 be used to read more street signs. Also, at some point the system needs to understand the nature of different things blocking the road: is it an injured person or animal on the road or a large plastic bag?
'AI5' would be hardware version 5 which isn't coming anytime soon. Hardware 4 is 'AI4' and Hardware 3 is 'AI3'. I don't see why AI3 won't be able to read street signs once they focus on it.
@ Elon said on some earnings call AI5 is targeted around end of 2025 (Elon time). And since it will be used in Optimus as well, it should be designed to recognize a larger number of different objects (this is MY guess).
You mean A-pillar because B pillars already have cameras installed. Yes, either A- pillars or in headlights looking more left and right for super human “see around the corner” vision.
Kim Paquette showed us FSD would need front end side-viewing cameras 3 years ago on her tight streets with buildings to the corner in her Newport Rhode Island FSD tests. Wish Tesla had listened.
I believe in supervised mode it is always going to respect the speed limit. We may see Hurry mode but that would be mainly the driving style and maneuver. No insurance would support speeding tickets and autonomous vehicles should not be breaking traffic rules. If it can for speeding then why not jumping red signal or stop when it is safe. We may not like but I believe autonomous will follow all traffic rules including speed limit.
NTSA stops are a thing. The real question at this point is how long the transition takes. I am of the belief that in the long run, autonomous cars will put traffic officers and, more importantly, trauma units out of work. As far as 'following the rules' I think stop signs, stop lights, etc. will be suggestions to the vehicles of the future. Once they observe a clear path, they will use it. If I had a dollar for every disengagement you had… I think I’d have a dollar. My GF’s 3 is getting this build right now, thanks for the head’s up!
Chuck's excited voice in the opening scene is awesome, glad you're having fun ☺️
Thanks, Chuck! I’m on 13.2.1 and it backed in at my supercharger. Took me by surprise! Also backs out of driveways and angled parking spaces. Love it!
Almost did it for me today. It got most of the way and said there was an obstruction. Anyway, 7 hour drive from central NC to Hilton Head Island today with zero interventions (3 that I’m not counting because they were my fault) It’s awesome. Did insurance cover the additional FSD cost or were you able to transfer?
FSD got me rear-ended also.
Frustrated HW3 owner watching.
That fast three point turn was super human. FSD is on the path to become better, and safer, than any human driver. 👍
Wow! That was an impressive drive
Thank you, Chuck!
Welcome!
Always appreciate these videos. I need to slow them down. Because watching at 1.75 speed makes me super impatient with other people. 😂
I think a good stat to make record of is “awkward maneuvers.” Like the fake roundabout maneuver that was weird, but amazing.
That was amazing how FSD has come along the future is now.
thanks, Chuck
You are very welcome
I Love your Videos Chuck I watch them from start to finish Thank You for posting 🥳❤💯💥💫

Cool, have not wantched 1 hour video for so long time, and even rewind a few times to make sure I get all the details.
FSD is getting so good Chuck is starting to get bored & running out of things to talk about
Love it!! 😂
Merry Christmas Chuck
Why do you have a download icon? Did you get another firmware push?
GREAT TO SEE 👀 TO SEE THE PROGRESS 🤗💚💚💚
Thanks Chuck. Great vid.

Thanks Chuck. Maybe if they replace Standard with Auto and let AI choose between the other two options?
Makes me a little crazy. I'm old school for sure.
Hey Chuck, looks like that "FSD is degraded" warning seems to pop up when the car is recalculating it's navigation route.

About the degraded FSD, remember there are a lot of more cameras as just the one in your front windshield. Check if the other ones are dirty

I think your drone shots are out of sync. They are not showing when you actually do the turns
Mistake. Sorry. Better next time. I worked too fast on this one.
@ChuckCook all good, otherwise another great video! (I stuck till the end)!
It’s interesting because it looked like you still had an update icon?
@chuck please use “standard” mode for UPL.
With all these new updates and improvements, do you think HW 4 is enough for true unsupervised FSD (L4) or do you believe more cameras are still required?
Front camera is nearly 180, more forward than most drivers can see. Just nudge out slowly like humans.

What if speed profiles under unsupervised = different rate tiers, eg, 3x the cost for ‘hurry’ due to increased potential cost
Or 3x cost for chill, for wasting its time.
😂🤙
How many interventions, any issues?
Tesla should hire chuck in their FSD Test Team
They don't need to hire him and he doesn't want to get hired...
That would probably be a pay cut.

This video is about Chuck Cook's first impressions of the Tesla FSD version 13.2.2 update on his AI4 Model Y.
Here are some highlights:
FSD is much improved: Chuck is impressed with the update, especially its rapid decision-making and ability to handle complex scenarios, like the 3-point turn he demonstrated at 0:10.
Holiday Update: Version 13.2.2 includes the Holiday update, which includes features like:
Energy search along route: (2:13)
Cross traffic alert: (2:18)
Dash cam viewer: (2:08)
SiriusXM arrival: (2:10)
FSD needs more work: Chuck still sees areas for improvement, especially with Vision park assist (4:38).
Hurry Mode: He tests out the hurry mode and is impressed with its confidence and aggression on the highway (24:00).
Robo Taxi Potential: He thinks FSD is close to being ready for robo taxi use, though he acknowledges that blind corners (51:10) and camera placement (51:30) are still areas of concern.
New Features: He highlights the new radar screen (48:38) and the number of stalls available at a supercharger. (19:35)
