    It has a mains converter fitted 240v where all the bad wiring is fitted and on the left side has been reduced to 24v via the converter/reducer, the pump is 24v and the glow plug is 24v you can have a converter that gives you 12v, 24v, and the converter/dropper is powered by 240v.

    The more traditional heaters I have were all advertised as 12 or 24 volt (I think) but I always was glad I didn't have to try it. I'd love one with that body on it though. I could really use the air blow feature here in summer because it gets cold outside (bushland) even when the days are 40 degrees. Would be like an air con. Cheers - interesting stuff.

    • @popuptoaster

      Most are either because they were designed to run in lorries which are 24v as well camper vans which are mostly 12v. My houseboat has both so I run my heater on 24v, it's more efficient, you can use thinner (cheaper) wiring and you get less voltage drop over distance.

    • @MIck-M
      @MIck-M ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@popuptoaster Yes I agree. I am off grid (48 volt and inverter as well as the old 12 volt system for water etc) so I had to add a 12 volt supply next to the heater from the house or the power drop is out of control even over a short distance. I use a UPS as well after destroying one heater during power outs - very efficient now. Cheers

    To bend that exhaust to clear you do 2 things....First you use a socket that just fits inside the pipe smooth end, add an extension on it. Push it all the way down to the ribs inside the pipe and use the extension to give you leverage to do the bend needed. Second you test fit it and then trim the smooth part back as needed to clear the floor and the body of heater and clamp on. I use a cookie sheet under mine to act as a sort of heatshield to keep exhaust heat off of the floor or table etc. you set the heating unit on. Hot glue a couple of stacked coins to bottom corners of cookie sheet to allow some airflow between floor and cookie sheet. Frustrating they did not allow for this clearance in any of the one unit designs but there are multiple ways around the problem besides just stacking bricks for it to set on. I use a similar power supply to run my units except they are 120/240v switchable and 12v 30 amp. Low cost (around $12 US when I bought mine) and surprisingly reliable, mine have been in use for 3 years with no problems.

    That PSU doesn't look like it's rated to operate in below freezing temperatures. So much open space leaves a lot of room for condensation, hence shorting risks.I suppose a 12V voltage regulator can solve the issue of keeping 24V from frying the pump.

      12v is earthed back to the battery, mains is earthed through the plug. deisel burns more efficiently when its warmed and also prevent it from going waxy in really cold conditions making heater useless. the exhaust should be piped outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning and death ! common sense to prevail here.

Not sure how much red diesel one of those air heaters would eat in 24hrs say if you had it blasting the full whack, but it feels pretty close to the gas prices with the standing charges now, where gas boilers are pretty inefficent anyway.

    Been researching budget friendly diesel heaters vs. Mini wood stoves for dry heat for my van. In a storm or a really cold night I don't see the ability to sustain the energy a diesel would need to run for an extended period of time if you don't have a way to replenish the power source as it runs. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am still learning about electricity and could be mistaken. Yet, I am really leaning towards a mini wood stove.

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  ปีที่แล้ว

      If power and power source is an issue then a wood burning stove would be the best choice as it requires zero power. Just your fuel (wood) and a chimney to keep the burn going.

    Great video, I bought this machine off Amazon last year purely because of the 240v aspect and not having to be faffing with a 12v supply. Inside was a complete horror story like seen in this video. One thing I couldn’t figure out though was when switched off at the control panel and switched off at the wall plug but with the plug still in the socket-the machine still had something running inside… I could hear a humming sound so I pulled the plug out of the socket and it stopped. How can it do that? Or is my socket knackered?

    I would be really dubious about having an internal switching regulator and powering it from 240 or 120Vac. That switcher does not appear to have any safety certifications for use in Europe or North America. It probably has a CE make but, in the Chinese market, that means "China Export". They have hijacked the CE symbol for a different purpose. Also, the placement of the switcher is questionable as it is exposed to fuel spillage. It should have been raised up off the base.
    At least with a 12 or 24V system, the certification lies in the external power supply which is ideally locally sourced ... and not from Banggood or Aliexpress
