This song brings me to tears nearly every time. This is for you to make your own meaning.. Maynard has said this was inspired by the birth of his son. His name is Devo H. Keenan (middle name is Helio). while like most of the lyrics he writes, the inspiration is not exactly what the song is "about." Maynard tries to find emotional truth that is behind the inspiration allowing the listener to apply it to their own experience. He doesn't think the music should be 'about' him. The themes I hear in this are of letting the past you die thus the have dies and will die is acceptance of change in ones self. Without minimizing the pain that can accompany such change. The line "Without the skin, here beneath the storm, Under these tears, now The walls came down" - is the moment when your emotional armor breaks down and you begin to truly feel. "Once the snake is drowned and As I look in his eyes" - The snake, is the temping voice calling too your old ways (The snake metaphor is used in 46 & 2 aa well) - here the eyes your new born child... in that moment you are a new person/ "Recalling all of those times I could have cried then I should have cried then" - mourning the choices not to connect, to show emotion, to be vulnerable. This is where I cry 🥲😂 "As the walls come down and As I look in your eyes My fear begins to fade Recalling all of the times I have died And will die It's all right I DON"T MIND" - This is using this true moment of feeling to commit to be the person you NEED to be no matter where you came from. Again just my take... I hope you find meaning for yourself as well! how does it make YOU feel that is what is important! Spiral OUT!
that's awesome... he goes through a lot of emotional changes.. probably why they retired this song from there set list.. the last time they played it was in the early 2000s it would be dope to hear it live.
Getting that one requested a lot. I've been avoiding Fear Inoculum. Want to get well versed in their early music. But damn it, I just might jump ahead. Drum cam vid is also being requested. Thanks for watching and commenting. 🌀
@@B-Drags-Den that gong hit in Descending is what got me. Had to pause it and say wtf was that?! Then played it solely for the next week. It’s like 9 or 10 minutes in so enjoy it! There’s nothing like hearing their music for the first time.
I'm enjoying your Tool journey! You're catching meaning pretty well here. The past can drag you down, but there's hope in the future. Maynard's son was born in 1995, middle name is H.. but the vagueness is so others can draw their own meanings.
Thanks. I need to read the lyrics (without the music) to get a better understanding. It took until the end for me to kinda get it. Thanks for watching. 😃
@@B-Drags-Denwithout context (1st reaction) you are vibin as the kids will say. You’re picking up what they are putting down, every song- musically speaking. Lyrically, it’s like the OP says…
like many tool songs , multiple listinings will open your mind . the music is so good but lyrics take a little time to digest and find meaning for yourself. tool does not hold your hand or use mother goose rhyme schemes the encourage thought. cheers

Thanks. That is a thorough and intelligent interpretation. I feel if I went back to reflect, I would find the same. Thanks for watching. 🙌

This entire album is amazing. Of course, most of them are, but Aenema is my fav. The title track is an incredible song, lyrically.
Aenema is just around the corner. Thanks.
@@B-Drags-Den Maynard doesn't really hold back, but this one is special. Looking forward to it! :)
All of them are
Tool Army reporting for duty. Descending is my favorite! 🛠️

H is Maynard’s newborn son, Devo H Keenan. The song is about Maynard becoming a new father.

My favorite Maynard verse:
Ven om ous voice temps me draaains me bleeeds me leeeaves me…
How hollow that lyric is. Thanks for commenting 🙂
Yeah, this one is tough to decipher unless you know his kids middle name.
