  • A few other things about this project…
    I really liked seeing what people could make with Perler beads but I didn’t want to devote the hours it can take to make them. I thought I could make a robot that did it for me instead. I’m an engineer and wanted to do something that involved lots of mechanical, electrical, firmware and software engineering. Started planning and designing at the start of 2019, 9 months later and lots of iterating, I finally made something that was reliable and relatively fast.
    Originally I was going to try to use this to get the world record for the biggest bead sprite, until I realized it was as big as a house. www.guinnesswo... . Now I plan to use this to make gifts for friends and family.
    The machine was built around an old 3D printer I had that stopped working (RoStock Max V2). Motor controller was a RAMBO 1.2 running some Reprap firmware I modified with a bunch of extra commands. I added an extra Arduino to run certain tasks in parallel to make it go faster.
    For the software, I created a python script that would take any image I found online and match each pixel to the closest color I had on the machine (64 colors). It would then create a gcode script that would have the image built layer by layer. These instructions can then be sent to the machine to print. The max size I can build is a 33x33 square. If it’s too big, the script breaks it up into different panels to be made separately.
    I have another operation that fuses panels together and also does a second fusing operation to further melt the Perlers. It’s not shown in the video but it’s a similar heated bed that I put the bead sprite on, then put a bunch of heavy stuff on top of that to compress the beads, I found this is much quicker and more consistent than ironing

    Anyone else find it cute the way the print carriage gently pushes the bead into place?

      My guess is that dropping the bead in exactly from the top doesn't allow for any error (tipped beads) so they have to set the bead down and then adjust on the x-y plane to keep everything tight.

    As someone who has struggled with the fusing aspect of this wonderful hobby...this is far beyond what I could ever dream of. Despite it not being the largest bead sprite, this is still worthy of a lot of praise.

    Friend: Hey, so what'd you do this weekend?
    Engineer: I made bead art
    Friend: Cool! I love doing that, but I can never iron it perfectly. How do you do it?
    Engineer: Heated bed
    Friend: What?
    Engineer: And a robot.

    Ok now those are just about the coolest things I've seen in a while. The beads give them that perfect pixelated look like they originally were. Great job, that must have taken a fair chunk of time to build and debug that printer.

    I was working on a similar concept about 3 or so years ago. The agitator design is similar to what I was thinking but there were some things I drew out that I worked differently towards the plate. Once I move I still plan to try to build one but with a goal to make things fast using a different kind of sorter with beads that don't melt or are not affected by the heat plate so they will fluff the bottom of the building area and the beads will line up after.

  • @MrBaoomTheFirst
    @MrBaoomTheFirst 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I feel like your printer could benefit from a simple change in the bead storage, making it less dificult for the agitator: have the bead storage be funnel shaped, you could just print/make small angled bottoms for the bead containers and push them in after emptying the containers, shouldn't be that much work and it makes sure you can use every single bead in the container and also means you don't have to fill it constantly because the beads on the side don't fall into the hole

    That's wild, have you tried making 3D objects with this? Like if you layed one layer, had the robot iron it, then started placing ontop, couldn't you have 3D objects?

    • @OwenWithAHammer
      @OwenWithAHammer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jova7031 Good question, I figure if you heat either long or hot enough the ironing of the second layer would heat the bottom of the second layer and the hot of the first layer enough for them to make a connection.

    • @adamklassen1
      @adamklassen1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jova7031 There may be some way to automate it but perhaps you could use some sort of spray adhesive. You could manually give it a quick spray between layers assuming you're nearby. A guy with this level of invention could probably automate the process though!

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have mixer nozzles on 3D printers, I at first though he was doing this with the raw plastic pellets which are usually used to make filaments. So this wouldn’t be the first color printer, and it doesn’t smooth the colors which should be possible with the mixer nozzles for basically any color. Instead it’s a pretty awesome robot that reminded me I used to make some of those cup coasters and decorations with these, fun simple times!
      I’m pretty sure his machine tweaked just a little would work great for 3d printing pellets and mixing them into a steady filament role of a typical 3d printed was used below it instead of his pick and place machine, wouldn’t be surprised if he does just that someday since he’s got like 90% of the parts right there and probably 100% of the talent needed.
