  • Paul lives in an apartment with an outside balcony and wants to get in touch with the ham radio world! He is wondering if a MFJ 1788 Mag Loop antenna would allow him to get on the air from his balcony. Dave has just the antenna and setup for the job!

I have had the "MFJ-1786, SUPER HI-Q LOOP, 36" Diameter, 10-30 MHz," for a very long time. In Florida I can't keep the wasps out of it, my sealing tape efforts open up no matter how I try to seal it. good for 200 Watts, I peak at 100. Watts. In the basement for the last few years. I hope to get it out soon. Ron W4BIN

just completed a 1' dia mag loop for hand portable 50MHz operation that works nicely but talking of loop sensitivity even putting your hand near the tuning cap knocks it off tune (but a long plastic "paddle" extension from the butterfly cap shaft down to the handle gives me nice "thumb control" tuning across the whole 6m band.

So glad I found your channel! New Ham (still waiting on call sign). Been obsessing over this very issue. But your video was great and you pointed me in the right direction! Recently saw a few videos showcasing the “AlexLoop” (at DXEngineering). Your video gave me more confidence in that it’s like the way to go, except that I would indeed prefer to get it mounted to the rail horizontally as you described. Thank you!

I have had excellent results with my MFJ magloop on our third floor balcony, working a lot of DX with 100 watts. I have it in the horizontal configuration, yielding horizontal polarization in all directions. All of Dave's caveats apply, but I highly recommended the MFJ magloop.

Good luck finding one in the not too distant future since they are out of business now

@@kj7element276 True. Good luck finding much of anything in their product line. Inventory is now nil.

I have one, but I know MFJ advises it be elevated to a certain height to effectively use it horizontally. Have you experimented with different height? How high do you have it mounted? I might experiment with horizontal mounting. 73, K7KS

@@AlanElBee My MFJ magloop was mounted horizontally on a tripod sitting on the third floor balcony of a three story frame apartment building. Surprisingly good performance.

Hi @davecasler I have an MFJ magloop - at 8:27 a tuning aid that lights up - can't find this on DxEngineering - what do they call it? I would like to try one. Thanks for all your assistance! K7KS Alan

Hello, I'm putting a vertical fiberglass VHF antenna on top of a 2 story school so they can communicate throughout the building with the repeater. Does vertical beam width matter at all? It's omnidirectional but I'm concerned about propagation directly underneath. Thanks. I can't find too much online.

I guess my question is: will there be a huge skip zone underneath my rooftop antenna?
