A TINY pre-sorter device capable of splitting your input into sortable (stackable) items, "unsortable" (non-stackable) items and shulker boxes (full or empty).
These kinds of items are usually treated differently in a sorting system which is why it's useful to get them separated into their respective categories.
In the end a practical example is presented with an input system capable of unloading shulker boxes and sorting everything inside it automatically, including the emptied shulker box itself!

Amazing! I could barely believe the first 1-wide design was a pre-sorter!
I suppose it is a good thing I am still gathering materials to build my bulk storage and recategorizer. Now to fiddle with my blueprint...

I've never heard of something like this, I love it!! Redstone is my favourite part of Minecraft and this is so fascinating to me. Built it and studied it so I could understand what is going on and I am very thoroughly impressed

What about instant dropper lines? Would hoppers below be able to pull items out of it?
Not by default, the fact that items can "skip" over hoppers when moving inside instant dropper lines is what makes mechanisms such as the one presented in this video possible.
Maybe it's possible if we could somehow force hoppers to update at the exact time when it needs to be checked.
With the practical design would you need overflow protection if the input chest was directly above the sorter, instead of using a item elevator?
No need in that case. The overflow protection is for the item elevator.
When i put two or more non-stackable items in the last system (right behind each other) it breaks. Then only the first one is sorted into the right hopper but the second one (and every following non-stackable item) goes in the first hopper to the stackable stuff.
Does anyone have a suggestion how to fix this?

Can you use this for empty shulker vs somewhat full shulkers?
I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but in order to measure box levels you need to place them as a block in the world. Here's an example: th-cam.com/video/_PfZ6eIw7Y0/w-d-xo.html (17:46)

Not likely, but I might work on a new fully featured input system for general sorting systems, then there'll be a tutorial.

hoppers dont check for dropped items when theres a composter on top
it's also used for a lag-free (less laggy, anyway) way of getting a certain signal strength sometimes
Answer: a composer is occasionally needed in redstone because they make music with note blocks, and block updates are created when a note block is played, so you can use a composer as an updater. My favorite composer to use is Beethoven.
