I was a band director for 33 years and saw this numerous times. Bumping the bottom of the valve into the top of the narrow part of the casing deforms the edge causing this problem.
I have a trumpet where the number 3 piston sticks. Based on the tests I did, the problem is with the plastic piston guide. 🤷 Funny that a simple plastic guide causes the trumpet piston to jam.
