How Players Broke the Sound Barrier in Tears of the Kingdom

- This is the story of our adamant refusal to let something like gravity keep us down.
In the short two months Tears of the Kingdom has been out, there has been a continual arms race between players to try move Link as quickly as possible. This video is about one type of vertical movement technique that has emerged as a result of this activity: the Recall Launch.
As of now, we can now launch over 4km, from the deepest depths to the highest heavens, at over 1.5 times the speed of sound.
Edit: A lot of people are asking about the music that plays during the final launch sequence. It is a merge of three parts, two of which can be found on yt and the other that I found elsewhere online. Here are the two on youtube, in order:
• Approaching the Wind T...
• Approaching the Wind T...
Here's a link to the third part when the launch completes.

Edit: So as of this morning, the record has been broken by a player in Taiwan appropriately named Vector. I am proud to say he also used a version of the paracopter :). Here is the video th-cam.com/video/YSjquwJdNQU/w-d-xo.html
ZR2 is next. Thanks for waiting!
Let me know if you liked the new channel intro. It took a while to put together. I am still going to try to slowly improve it with each video, but for now I am satisfied with it.
i must say the method you figured out before your dreams got crushed is far more reliable and easy to replicate. WHICH for speed running is still desirable.
edit: but i find a crime to remove the parry sound from the trailer music. as it fits so well :P
As the saying goes: No matter what you do, there will be an asian that does it better
Yes sir, we would like an OCO tutorial, very much.
Can you do a floor clip to get to the void at -3080 then perform the maneuver?
According to that video you linked, Link's estimated maximum velocity in that height record was 533 m/s. Even though his launch was larger, you are still currently the fastest maximum velocity recorded (unless there is footage of faster that I'm unaware of, of course). I believe that his alignment under the chasm with his paracopter design at the lava floor allowed for a more efficient travel arc to the sky ceiling, enabling a larger launch with lower maximum velocity.
Crazy how Link can tank 2,000,000 newtons of force straight to the face… but also dies when a Bokoblin pokes him too many times
The fact that you can get instakilled by a single arrow is crazy
He's actually dying from the shock and embarassment of being touched by a filthy plebian's so-called weapon.

I'm a little late to the party but your comment killed me!
fun fact the time it took from the bottom to the top disregarding the pause for loading is actually 40 miles shy of the speed of sound
The fact it says "you can't go any farther" when link is literally just laying flat floating upward is hillarious.
I don't know why, but I want you to launch the Stable Trotters. This seems too epic for Koroks. Call it the Breezer Space Program.
That's like calling NASA the "Apollo Space Program."

13:27 the fact that you got that spinning so fast that it does the eye trick where you think it's going backwards and slowing down at one point, in a video game, is absolutely crazy!
Could just be the framerate though
And not only did you hit the height limit, you did so with _authority_ too. A shame we didn't have the HUD on so we could measure how hard he smacked the invisible ceiling.
fun fact, by upgrading the wing suit the bonus set effect is to cancel EVERY fall damage so link can not only break the sound barrier, he can also survive such a fall
I consider myself very lucky for finding this video just six minutes after it was posted. It absolutely amazes me what some people are able to do with these games. My goals are a little more pedestrian.
I consider myself lucky to have seen this brilliant video at all, considering how few people YT seems to have pushed this out to.
Edit: okay, never mind - seems it's deservedly hit the algorithm now. Better late than never :D

The glitchless speedrun for this game is going to be wild.
Except this is powered by a physics glitch? You’re not even supposed to have the motor either.
@@blacksage2375using autobuild isn’t a glitch, the motor use is totally fine
@@csbunbun Shine parts and other tricksome items getting patched out from defusing/autobuild would be 0% surprising... but spinning up that motor by holding it juuuust so is 100% a glitch.
@@blacksage2375 not a glitch because it all in the set parameters of game physics THEY give us, With tools being used as intended and nothing being altered to the tool itself.
@@tyopsie Lol next you'll tell me giants can really launch me into space.
Anyways the only "intentional" use of that motor is with electricity idiot. You even play this game? Or do you just trawl the interwebs letting other people do it for you?
Anyways minus a shock item (that could be used anywhere btw just not for this much speed people make 'legit' planes that way) what is actually happening to fuel that copter is something closer to clipping through walls. Which happens in a game not because the devs "give us parameters" but because they don't anticipate every scenario with things like collision detection.
Oh and again for an item that is at best an "intentional oversight" to even have.
You want to call anything that doesn't crash the game "not a glitch" you can I guess but don't expect anyone to be impressed with your 10,000 diamonds duplication glitch because they probably come up for air a few times a year not just keep diving farther up their own butt.
23:13 The timing with the music is sick 😮
It's so perfeeeeect
Seriously!
what song is it?
Wind temple diving theme
I had full body chills at this moment
Now i have a way out of the depths areas without ascend pillars, thank you! Im trying a no fast travel run so the OCO launch will come in so handy
Glad to help! For depths exits, you’ll need to probably use mirrors, batteries, or cannons. Make sure to mash A to pick up and put them down quickly. (I’ll explain why in a future video)
Haha! I’m glad I’m not the only one attempting a no fast travel run. You know back on the great sky island I kinda gave up and just did the fast travel tutorial because it was so high up. But now that I know all I need is the recall ability, an oriented object, and a flat surface? I’m gonna give it a shot
@@noizepusher7594 You can get both wings and fans on GSI, which should make for a decent OCO launch with enough attempts. I am not sure about the distances bewteen the cave of awakening and the rest of GSI though. If all else fails, you may need a spear throw launch, which could take some effort.
I love easily accessible movement glitches that require minimal setup, so this seems like just my thing. The vertical TOTK version of a bomb impact launch. I loved the BIL in BOTW and was sad to see it go, but this is actually just better
According to my calculations, the velocity for the launch that reached the height limit was about 19.3 meters per frame, which gives about 579m/s or Mach 1.6886. I sampled 180 frames of the z coordinates of Link moving up from the glitch to calculate acceleration (which seems to be constant in this case) to be .03253m/frames^2. This allowed for using the kinematics formula Δx=vt+(1/2)at^2 to find Link's initial vertical velocity by finding a time in the earlier launch which has about the same position as a time in the largest launch, and setting vt+(1/2)at^2 of the largest launch equal to vt+(1/2)at^2 for the earlier launch. Since the initial vertical velocity of the earlier launch, the time for the earlier launch to that positions, the time for the largest launch to that position, and the acceleration are all known, the only unknown in the vertical velocity of largest launch, which means I could solve for it. The position I used was as Link was near the rock seen at frame 12 of 18:53 in the original launch and frame 12 of 22:58. This gave a vertical initial velocity for the largest launch of about 18.21379m/frame. Assuming the horizontal velocity for Link was about the same as the original launch, this gives the total velocity of about 19.3m/frame, if my math is not wrong. It is quite possible I messed up my math somewhere, but I think the number should be about correct.
The deep40k max height launch? Yes that sounds about right! There is a very good chance that that launch went faster, as it didn’t need to contend with rocks. Maybe I should try to see the top speed I can get. It’s just a pain to measure them.
Just for comparison's sake, we can also get rough averages from the known times and distances covered. For example, here are some imprecise numbers to start:
One: 18:50-18:54 + 18:59-19:11, 4185 m / 16 seconds = 261.6 m/s
Two: 22:55-22:59 + 23:05-23:15, 4317 m / 14 seconds = 308.6 m/s
What in the world
Aka, Mach 1.69 (nice)
I think my brain had a stroke trying to read this
"He is a man of focus, commitment, and sheer f***ing will." This statement has never applied more completely than to this man. Well done, keep up the good work.

Thanks for telling me how much of the video I didn't need to watch.😊
I skipped....I'm not going back.
The first time I’ve heard “that day, I was messing around with some fans and stuff” from a TH-camr and not been repulsed by the results. Keep up the amazing work, you’re like a scientist!
Oh god, sorry didn't mean for that to sound bad. I hope to never need to make an apology video
@@paradox_guardian You seem like the kind of guy who would never have to do such a thing! Serious credit for how much effort went into achieving those clips, especially towards the end!
We can actually determine a minimum speed for Link!
He goes up 4317 m in some number of seconds t. Acceleration due to gravity in Hyrule being g, we know that for a certain speed v, the height reached is equal to v^2/2g. Rearranging this equation, we get v = sqrt(2gh).
The acceleration due to gravity in Hyrule has been determined to be 37.81 m/s^2.
Therefore, the minimum speed for Link to launch from the bottom to the top of the world would have been sqrt(2*37.81*4317) = 571.36 m/s, or mach 1.67.
It's probably even faster than that, since you can see Link bounce off the invisible ceiling a bit when he hits the height limit, instead of naturally reaching 0 velocity just from gravity.
Fun fact the gerudo highlands chasm (the one in The snow) is actually the deepest chasm and the longest chasm so if you want a challenge try launching out of that one and see how high you get
I’ll be honest, I’ve never played BOTW or TOTK, but I love seeing the speed run techs thats people find. They are just endlessly fascinating in these game. But I have to say, the production and analysis found in this video is absolutely incredible. I was captivated for over 20 minutes here.
I was astonished to see that you don’t have significantly more subscribers, my friend! Please, keep up the astounding work and know that you have rightfully earned another fan. Look forward to the future content! 😊
If you enjoyed this video, then I definitely think you would enjoy the games too! The have wonderful physics engines the likes of which I rarely see; inspiring enough for me to put together a video like this.
I love that they created a game in which you could create a video like this... I can't say I've heard of many others, aside from maybe Garry's Mod...
if there's one thing that this version of link will never stop doing, it's injuring himself to get somewhere fast.
Busted out laughing at 14:19 noticing the villager fight the bokoblin, imagining his relief turning to confusion and terror when he realizes the Hero of the Calamity isn’t there to save his life but instead finagle a contraption to spin like a motor and careen Link off the hillside faster than the speed of sound

Thanks :) Comments like this keep me going. I sometimes wonder why I do this. It seems like the harder I work on a video, the fewer views it gets
@@paradox_guardianclearly the effort you have put into all of your other videos has paid off! I'd bet even in the videos that didn't do as well, you learned a lot. This was a recommended video and I just want to say, your story was amazing, the way you walked through it, etc... really helped me understand how to perform this trick. dang bro, great video. probably some of the most effort i have seen put into a video this whole year. you deserve my sub.
i have to say, the production on this video is absolutely amazing, you definitely deserve more subscribers
I don’t know if you know this, but launching yourself horizontally and entering dive modus, if you cancel dive and directly press glide you’ll keep the momentum of how fast you were diving/flying . So in (terminal velocity) horizontal dive, press B and instantly X and you’ll keep your speed
This was a good f***ing video! Amazing and impression and your commentary was the best!
I'm glad you were able to make such a goal, and not even get assisted by a wing suit.
And that depths diving theme was just such a good touch.
This is genuinely one of the most entertaining videos I have ever watched. Great work! can't wait to see more content.
I have to ask: Do we know for sure that the glide suit doesn't create extra drag when flying up? Because it may not be a coincidence that the one time you immediately reached the height limit was when you weren't wearing the glide suit. Someone also mentioned that the Chinese player who beat the record did it without any clothing/armor.
I was wondering about that, but I’ve never noticed a difference. If so, it’s not perceivable.
Would probably need to do a set of launches with the suit, and without, and calculate the speed a bunch of times in order to really know... Would be really cool if Nintendo gave each of their armor sets (or pieces individually) their own coefficient of drag...
I would love an oco tutorial, while the other launching methods are fun i’ve been looking for something quick and easy just when i want to get some height. I feel like i’d definitely use oco the most during my playthroughs
I’ll put that in the video idea list. I have some other projects I want to do first
What an awesome video, from the experimenting to the narrative and editing, it's all fantastic.
Incredibly well made, and super intersting video. I love hearing how people figure this stuff out, and major respect for including all the others that helped you!
Sick video. Subscribed ♥
The fact that the game freezes implies that you are. breaking the Time Barrier.
There's a part of me that wishes instead of just a "You cannot go further" barrier at the height limit that Link just starts suffocating from lack of air. And then if you go fast enough you get a special death animation for getting launched into orbit (assuming you made it up there before you ran out of air).
I mean, Link's well equipped for space travel, I'd say. Maybe he could offset the lack of oxygen slowly killing him by gorging on apples en masse while he's up there.
I did enjoy this as much as you did. Such a great job on the whole video, I love this!
I'm so glad this video popped up in my recommendations. Absolutely fascinating!
Do you know if the flight suit, although giving you better maneuverability, creates more drag? Because you nailed it without the glide suit, ironically in the Zora gear, wonder if that plays a roll
I just can't fathom the dedication that went into all this. Great work, man!
Thanks :)
Your hard work is much appreciated!!
This was an insane journey to watch. And when the music kicked it when you launched all the way from he depths to the height limit was amazing. I got chills
Hey, that's pretty cool!
I like seeing competent people using their gifts in video games to make something unexpectedly interesting. And just being a part of something greater gives such a fulfilling feeling!
Two things really disappoint me, zonai charge and stamina. Even with a fully upgraded stamina wheel, if you launch from a sky tower, you can hardly get any distance at all. And the zonai stuff which is supposed to be the main selling point, you can't build anything cool, anything more than a single fan just consumes too much power in too short a time.
thank you for posting this video. i watch this every time i feel down and it immediately lifts my spirits and gives me hope. your passion is inspiring and makes others want to spend time on what is interesting to them. thank you so much for sharing ❤️
Such a thorough explanation and analysis. Appreciate it bro. Wish we had some people like you on our projects at work loool
PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEEASE make a video of the physical implications of this!!!!
(Also with the quickness of that record breaking launch and the speed of which you hit the load point I think it’s safe to say you were closer to Mach 2 than 1.59, it looked that fast)
After going through the footage, removing the part where it froze to load more of the map, you traveled that distance in exactly 13.3 seconds.
4,317 meters in 13.3 seconds equals to about 324.58 meters per second. Which means you were averaging almost exactly 726 miles per hour
I'll do more exact math some other time, I need to find out your elevation when the game lagged. From there, I'll be able to calculate your launch speed more accurately
This video has amazing editing and that final launch was INSANE
Thanks for your dedication brah. Mission Success.
Now the real question is, what was the g-force Link experienced when he went from near zero to mach 1.59 in 1/30th of a second?
Somewhere on the order of 1800G I think
@@paradox_guardian I feel like that's up there with one of the biggest feats of Link's durability.
