Making a Ancient Roman Foam Sword

- This sword was built for my friend John Soares new movie JITNI Book of Lies. He wanted a ancient looking sword prop that he could also use as a stunt fighting weapon. He gave me his concept drawing and some photo references of real old metal swords . Join me on this journey taking EVA foam and turning in to a cool movie prop.

The sword is great, just one lil thing to take into account, that shape is for a celtic sword, not roman.

I just clicked to say the same thing after seeing the thumbnail. The leaf blade and guard are unmistakable. Nothing at all like the common straight angular legionare sword
@@modakkagitplugga actually, lots of movies and TV shows wrongly depict Romans using swords like these, and he's already been corrected on this, so there's no need for you being such a smartass and trying to make him feel stupid about making a very common mistake.
It also has Hebrew lettering on it, rather than Celtic or Greek.

I could be wrong, but to me it looks more like a celtic longsword (slightly shorter, though), than a roman blade. Typically, the roman legion used a small sword called the gladius, that was easily used in tandem with the scutum, or roman shield, because it was maneuverable and needed less energy to swing, almost used to 'bite' into the enemies, rather than dealing one-hit kills. but again, i could be wrong, and this blade you made was used by warriors that weren't in the legion. i'm not an absolute expert on ancient weapons and warfare, lol. Either way, it's damn fine work you did.

Another great video, I'm getting ready to do a semi-similar build myself for the first time(well, it's a sword) but I've been left wondering about what to use for a core if it's going to be a really long sword? Specifically I want to make Twilight from Thor: Ragnarok and my screenshot and photoshop sourced math tells me it'll nearly be as tall as I am (just short of six feet). Do you have any suggestions?

What an awesome looking sword. Would a hot wire foam cutter be a viable option for cutting out the shape and / or creating a bevelled edge? I notice pretty much everyone else uses a knife for cutting.
Yeah that knife works the best for me.

Question, before going into the painting and such, say you got the foam locked and sealed. Could you then cast a 2 part foam to make a mold then use the mold to cast a resin?
You could make a mold, but why would I. The foam sword was made from foam and built to take a beating.
Hi Ted. Thanks for the video! As always this was perfectly shown and described and the finished prop came out beautiful. Can you tell us where we can get that cos tool you used for cutting out the "V" trench? That looks like an indispensable tool for foam work! I've used similar tools, that I made myself, but they don't have the kind of steady control that one appears to have. I'll see if I can find it with my own research, but any help you could offer is greatly appreciated.

I’m recreating this project with my 10 year old son. The video is excellent for learning all the steps in the process. We’ve made it to the point that you mix the two colors of paint to make the brown “wash”. I was wondering if you just used the paints mixed, or if you added something to thin them before applying? Thank you so much. It’s been a wonderful experience so far, and it’s looking great.
Its just water down acrylic paint. Thats all it is.
With all the foam work you do, have you ever been asked to make anything specifically for a LARP event? I love your work, and it's helped me out immensely in my LARP and Cosplay crafting. I get so excited when you pop up in my notifications

I'd make one other change for LARPing, some reinforcement around the end of the core, so it doesn't dig through the foam.
Is creaturcast better than other foam sealers like plasti dip? What is the flexibility and texture like? Also, can you release the blueprint you used?
Hello Gavin, Creature cast is tougher than plasti dip. That is why I used it to seal this stunt prop weapon. I did not think of putting this pattern in my store. Would any body else wantt this pattern in my shop?
I’m building my very first sword. I’ve never worked with foam or a Dremel. How do you put such a fine edge on the sword?
Using a rotary tool and a stone bit, like I did in the video.
I really could've used this for Megacon a week ago :/ I definitely will use this now.

Does the creature cast need silicone sprayed on to it to keep it from cracking like how latex and plasti-dip do? And is creature cast soft enough to hit people with, would it be suitable for LARP?
If I made this for Larping I would have sealed it with rubber.

No, but you could. Just use this video so you can make your own foam Templar sword.
I am making swords for a friend, I think I can make a costool trencher with my 3d printer.
Also, I figured out you can use artic silver 5 like rub and buff.

How did you get you trenching tool to cut so well? Mine keeps tearing the foam.
Yeah, it a pain. You need to sharpen the blade after ever cut!

Awesome video! I'm working on a sword and learned a lot! I noticed you put Kwik Seal over top of the creature cast. Can you apply Kwik Seal over top of other sealants like PlastiDip or Mod Podge? That's a super helpful option once you see what shows through.... Thanks again for great work!
Yes you can. Once I seal my prop or costume there is always a spot or line I missed. Kwik seal to the rescue.
Watching you glue the pieces together before cutting them out has really got me thinking. Is there a reason not to permanently glue the support between them first, then cut the shape out?
@@davidwilliams30 It was just temporary to get the shape of both sides easier before making the trench for the rod.
The spraygun you use, would it work with latex?
Yes!
I have the same spraygun. It works well with latex and all kind of stuff.
you wrote יהוה in the blade, it means god(one of the many names) in Hebrew, you probably saw a relic of sword that was found in Israel.
No need to bandsaw. Cuttable one by one. Also It is very different and needs more materials.
When making a foam blade weapon. I find that when you cut the two sides separately they won't line up perfectly. I wanted the edges to be perfect. So that's why I cut them at the same time. Work smarter not harder.

It says in the sketch: "The name of God in Hebrew".

Not to be pedantic but the round c shaped shoulder was a thing on bronze age swords (that's how it was attached to the hilt) if you want to make a gladius hilt just kind of widens at the top and blade just sits there. Iron swords were never riveted. Also yes real ones were iron not bronze.
Good point. It looks like a Bronze age sword, so can not be Roman. Maybe Italic Urnfield culture sword.

@@EvilTedSmith I bought one of these after seeing this video. The blades overlap and I can't seem to get it to cut nice grooves as you did. It creates messy, jagged tears because of the blades (I think). Any advice?
Im literally using no Power tools... but LOTS of SAND PAPER ....
