  • What does a blown fuse look like? How do you know if it's good or bad? In this hilarious Quick Tips series, Life Meet Lightning discusses blown fuse troubleshooting. We'll examine what a blown fuse looks like, and discuss how to check it with a multimeter to know for sure that it's bad! We'll blow up some fuses in the process to demonstrate, so check it out!

    I like fuses more than breakers, If the link just melts and you see it melted but no blackness
    or soot, it was just an overload. This applies to the old edison scew fuses in older homes.
    Sadly people don't seem to pay much respect to fuses in cars as "Its only 12 volts" yup, quite
    true but there are loads of amps available, even a motorcycle battery can toast your bike's
    wiring in a few seconds. Volts'll shock you, amps'll burn you and both during a fault can mean
    a very bad day.

    That was fun, Jeff! I didn't know what a blown fuse looked like before, and now I do. You were also entertaining, which is always a treat!😀✌️

    I needed to see the glass fuse broken :( But it was fun to watch

      With glass fuses, usually the inside of the glass will be smoky and the wire that runs through it will be severed or completely burnt away. I have come across bad ones though that look perfectly fine, but when you measure them with the meter they test bad. They can be sneaky like that.
      I had to rewatch the video because I was sure I showed the glass one. I guess not, other than the animation at the beginning. 🫤 Sorry.

      I love them old meters. they are so cool how they work to. like the needle is attached to a shaft like a bolt and ot goes through a tube that is wraped with wire for induction .....it's crazy how them old meters work. great video... I like the humor shots.. shows you pl;aned it out. I need to plan better i just go in and wing it and end throwing most of it away. good luck with your channel . you ever see that funny electrician guy .... he's like from Iran or somewhere over there ... he knows his stuff but he's allways melting stuff and getting shocked ...he's funny

      Yeah, I’ve seen him! Lol He is inspirational! I got to repair an old Huntron bench top meter from the early 80’s at work awhile back. It was pretty neat. We don’t get to repair stuff at the board level much anymore, but that older stuff can still be repaired at the board level!

    Wat about big 60A amp fuses like 1cm apart?

    • @LifeMeetLightning
      @LifeMeetLightning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Size doesn’t matter, typically. Although with some bigger fuses, I have found bad ones that weren’t completely blown, but they read higher resistance. Bigger fuses especially should read very low resistance when they are good. Anything above a 5 to 10 ohms, I would replace it. I’ve seen a big fuse fail to open and interrupt the circuit like it’s supposed to. It exploded and blew the cabinet door open. That was a 100 amp fuse.

    Sorry to bother you but after a power outage my electric whirlpool stove has no power. Check circuit breaker, unplugged stove still no power.

      A couple things I’d look at first: Sometimes when a breaker trips, it won’t actually kick back to the middle position. If you haven’t yet, I’d try flipping it fully to the off position and then back on. It will feel a little loose compared to a fully engaged breaker if this is what happened. Second, I’d measure the outlet where your stove is plugged in with a non-contact voltage detector or meter (If you aren’t comfortable doing this, get help from a professional). If you have the correct power there, then it’s likely something with your stove. It could be a blown fuse within your stove; or possibly damage to the control board if you had a power surge.
      Also, if you have an electric stove, it likely has a 240V plug. You’ll want to make sure you have proper voltage on two of the three or four receptacle slots. If you have a gas stove, it will probably have a normal 120V plug. It should still be on its own dedicated circuit, but I’d still check to make sure a GFCI outlet nearby hasn’t tripped.
