I bought a Crayon on a whim when I wanted a new overdrive pedal. Most overdrives only have the one tone control. I like the fact this one has both bass and treble on it. Massive amount of gain also, bordering distortion. Sounds better than my Tube Screamer. Great Review by the way.
I just ordered this pedal. I like it because you can retain a sound close to the bypass mode with a little OD added. Too many pedals decorate the tone which ends up “middy” or artificial from the sound of the amp.
Weird. Maybe it's the guitar/pickups, the amp used, or recording setup, but the Crayon side of the Hot Wax sounds better than this pedal? It still sounds good, but the Hot Wax Crayon side has that extra 5-10% to make it great.
Possibly the pickups....the pickups here are Bareknuckle Aftermaths, which is a high output pickup.... In the other vid they were more medium output Seymour Duncans.
Have you tried the east river drive by EHX??? I already have that pedal but I want to get this crayon as well, it's a silly question since I'm new to analog pedals but, which should I use as my overdrive and which as a booster for my solos??? I really love both pedals, thanks :)
