that change up at 3:15-3:18 ... my god you've gotta be able to think of that and then execute it ... brilliant!!! the whole performance though ... wow!!
It's different I loved Dave A style and I understand why so many people miss him... Pearl Jam changed the year they kicked Dave out. For myself everytime I hear Dave's drumming on live songs I'm like god he's the best, they I listen to matt and I'm like damn he's the best!
I don't understand why people keep asking about the music speed. A lot of bands increase music speed on shows. Many things differ a studio atmosphere from the show. The ambience is totally different. In a show you have people yelling, crying, jumping, alucinated because they're in front of a band they're a fan of. In a show we want a total mess, we wanna have fun, not meditate.
This is a fine example how a great drummer can improve a band! I also love the way he really enjoys what he's doing, plus he's also very sure of what he's doing! Look how he fills the verse with ghosts notes on the snare, which, sadly, are not listenable in rock music. Gotta love his class when hitting the crashes too! Matt is awesome!
They don't play the same tempo every show. On any given night according to the band's mood they will play any version of a song they'd like. If you don't think Matt can lay back and groove Evenflow at the original tempo you are out of your gourd. Cameron is a primary inspiration for a great many drummers who are or aspire to be "badass">>>period
OK, I just watched and listened to Dave A. and then this video with Matt playing the drums both Even Flow, there is a total difference, Matt is playing too fast, Dave A. it was slower and funky totally amazing not saying that Matt isn't good but I like Dave's A. version much better. I LOVE PEARL JAM FOREVER NO MATTER WHAT!!! Matt Cameron is an incredible drummer, I have respect for all the PJ drummers. Thank you for sharing this awesome video 😊💓✌️🤘🥁
Someone is going to have to remind people that this is quite a few minutes into the gig... If that isn't ringing any bells let's spell it out a bit clearer- PJ tend to play for hours so if you work out how many calories it burns playing drums at that level- LIVE, you have to remember it's just a human being making that happen! If anyone on this forum finds that a little beneath them, then I apologize to you for underestimating your talent and superhuman abilities.
Cameron's assault beginning at 4:15 and the crowd reaction - watched TB2K on the big screen at a public screening at UCLA when it was released - is still what I'll always remember most about this entire vid.
It's amazing to see people in the comments crediting or criticising Matt Cameron alone for the tempo decision. I don't believe these people have ever worked in a gigging rock band - I have in several and in my experience the drummer doesn't just control the tempo on his or her own it's not a like everybody else in the band have the tempo dictated to them - tempo is discussed and debated or argued about during rehearsal with a good drummer rarely having much more sway over the tempo than anybody else - if the drummer needs to always be dictating the tempo decisions like that then that drummer probably needs to leave and join a better band
Guys get insecure and excited and think speeding a song up/doing it faster will bring more energy which can be the case but with this version, it kills the groove/vibe of the tune. It sound they're in a hurry to get through the tune. Not good.
Ok every one that's got there head up Dave a. Butt. Pull it out and listen it was Matt camron that's on the dimo tape. They offered it to Jack irons but he turned it down. It was Jack that found Eddie. So every one stop and remember that it was Matt that help get them going
I have to agree and have found it very strange because in Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog Cameron is one of the most unique and inventive drummers. In my opinion, he just plays Pearl Jam too straight taking a lot of the character out of the songs. I definitely prefer Abruzzese's drumming in PJ to any other. It wasn't loudness however, it was actually the embellishments he added and believe it or not, "finesse". Watch the hi-hat, splash and china work he does in PJ. Amazing.
thats true, pj fans never got tired watching their concert tours bcoz of jack and especially matt, he and mccready play evry song differently every concert. For
The reason people here go on about Dave A, is because he was a part of the classic era of PJ. Yes, he and MC have different styles, and yes Matt is playing faster here, but it’s likely to be a band decision. The band have a happier dynamic with Matt, plus he’s a great songwriter. I don’t know why I’m bothering posting this. I prefer Soundgarden!

I see what he ia trying to do with a groove, song doesn't sound bad the way he plays it, but Dave made it just so iconic with his accents and fills. I like Matt's style but he is bringing too much Soundgarden playing into PJ, but nonetheless spotless performance otherwise.
Ahahahahahah, are you serious? Come on, Dave A. may have had a better groove for some songs, but Cameron and Abbruzzese are incomparable... Have you ever listened carefully to Matt's drumming? He surely rocks Soungarden more than PJ, but he is a monster anyway!
The consert I went to on the 7th of July 2012 here in Stockholm was magic, except for one thing. If I had one Q to ask the band it would be: Who sets the tempo on the songs today? I could count between 5-10 songs that started in the right tempo and then got "killed" by Matt, fex: Even Flow or even worse; Better Man. Matt seemes to be a lot about 4/4 and not so much about 2/4 wich brings out the groove/heaviness much more. I hope you read this Matt. My choice would have been Dave Krusen.

Matt played the demo of this song for Ten.. I just listened to a concert from '95 on Pearl Jam Radio and Jack Irons had the speed picked up. Even Flow should be played faster than on the album
I think Matt is a great drummer but in some PJ songs in live concerts ,he plays them too much faster compared to the original recording and the song lose his "groove" , this video is an excellent example of what I mean. Anyway he is one of the best, I love his work with Soundgarden.

John Seebmalek good point. I never thought about live vs studio being played at different speeds. And like the other guy said, the transition from calm playing to full blast at 3:15 is pretty impressive. A great road trip sing.
Watching both drummers, Matt and Dave Ab, I can say, Dave is much more technical and versatile, fill master, leaving the tempo back in a 1.5 plan. Otherwise Matt is more powerful and tempo focused, playing with almost no fills, rhythm overall. Personally, I like technical style, such as Gavin Harrison or Jeff Porcaro. Dave Ab version is god. Matt is an excellent drummer, but in this song, he sounds like "I can't play godly fills, so I'll speed up the song".
+DarkKage HD No way. Matt's just much playing the song exactly as it was in the studio recording. If you think he "can't play godly fills" then you're sadly mistaken. Go listen to his Soundgarden stuff, especially Jesus Christ Pose and Like Suicide. Dave is great, but he couldn't touch what Matt did in Soundgarden. If anything, it seems like Matt's had to tone it down and hold back his true skill while playing for Pearl Jam. He probably sped it up here because he was bored haha.
Sheldon Revet he goes all out at 4:15 . I am really sick of the drummer debate but I love Mighty Matt Cameron and maybe because he plays quick. Great drive.

Dave Abbruzzese kicks all of these guy's asses..Matt Cameron sounded good in SG, and here, he still sounded fine..but after a few years, his drumming was apathetic and boring..Dave was the main groove of Pearl Jam! bring him back!
Dave's a great drummer, but he overplays every song. He's like the new graphic designer that wants to use every Photoshop filter when correcting a photo. Listen to Even Flow with Dave. There are about 6 million cymbal crashes which drown out anything else the rest of the band is doing.
Drums for Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. How can you beat that? A fucking legend

Ah shut the fuck up.Cameron sucks in PJ....bottom line.
Alex Scott I wouldn’t say he sucks. His drumming fits perfectly for the music he helped write but he doesn’t really fit for anything before him.

my dream is that Cameron will use this kit again
One of the better drummers in rock.. Has been since the early Soundgarden days. Nice to see Matt in two of the most iconic Seattle bands.
That part coming out of the solo back into the chorus...... un. Fucking. Real.

Great points but it IS too fast for my tastes, regardless of who's decision it was to do it there.
