+Apollomasque Makes perfect sense. Had Omura sent just one Ninja he would've single handedly taken out 20 Samurai, and would've only been killed once Katsumoto, Ujio, Bob, and Algren all team up on him.
Well, sure, assassins.... but when they have no other option to get close?? When they are at war the security is too tight to get close to your target. Not to mention that most likely they had a time restraint. But the thing is, it is an assassination attempt!!! they caught Katsumoto with only a couple of bodyguards and friends at his side, they were not going to get better odds than this. Not to mention that if the first shot would have worked they wouldn't have been forced to take on the samurai. For enough money they would do this. I recommend you watch the ninja scene in Shogun, pretty great.
One thing about this scene thats just terrific and still admireable at the same time is that one guy that gets an arrow to the throat effectively saving Katsumoto. I understand its life or death for him be he doesnt even flinch like its nothing. His men just sacrifice their own life without a second thought. This just blows my mind.
Why are people saying the ninjas in this scene sucked? They were dropping samurai like bugs in the first bit and were even out-sword playing Kasumoto's guards effortlessly
Ninja is a broad term for a variety of tasks, mostly spycraft and counter espionage. Assassination was a part of the tasks ascribed to Ninjas, but these were probably RONIN swordsmen mercenaries who were attached to the Ninja's attacking force and they fought how they were trained. So they were hired swords for an assassination hit, they're used to fighting out in the open, not sneaking around at night silently. Very few 'ninjas' did that and those that did worked alone or in small groups.
I feel this scene in the movie, was when Algren truly changed sides: he was more than willing to warn Katsumoto, and risk everything to help fight with the other samurai. That scene when Katsumoto and Algren met midway in the battle, kind of looks like he gives a metaphorical nod of acknowledgement for that
For me it was how his enemy had chosen to take them out. Algren rode the indians down, and he felt like a monster for that (as reflected by his rampant alcoholism and PTSD), but the final straw was how they were willing to use a metaphorical knife in the night to end it. Native Americans didn't earn their glory in back-handed ambushes alone, they earned them in feats of courage and skill. Even in WW2, we see examples of Native Americans earning their chiefdom for capturing German troops and committing acts of heroism. Algren idolized and respected the native American not just for the simplicity of their ways, cutting the bullshit out of how their warriors made their worth in my opinion, he struggled to sleep because he earned his rank and was considered a 'hero' for cutting and/or gunning down women and children. In Algren's mind these weren't the acts of a hero or a warrior, they were a coward and/or a monster. He may have found the Samurai's ways monstrous or at the very least alien from his own experiences with the enemies he faced but they at least showed *some* parallel. They favored facing their enemy, looking them in the eye when they took a life. That was why he told his superiors that the conscripts he was being charged with "They aren't ready". He knew if his enemy had even half a chance of closing with them it as going to be a god-damned bloodbath and not in the favor of the people he was going to lead. If he was going to send men to war, they should be ready for war with people that live and breathe it. When the Ninja showed up, they were everything he embodied when he'd cut down the women and children, the entire battle scene only amplifies this when they fired into the chaos of warriors, women and children trying to figure out what is going on. They resembled the raiders and monsters he wanted to no longer represent.
This really highlights how Ninjas main advantage was stealth and the element of surprise. Algren alerting Tetsumoto to the danger took away a lot of the element of surprise that would have given the Ninjas the advantage they needed to change the entire outcome of the battle. When it became a full fight the experience and fighting skill of the samurai in comparison to the Ninjas became apparently obvious.
One of the reasons this fight was so good was that they took advice to not do it like an '80s-style fight out of American Ninja or the like...this clip comes in a couple minutes into the scene, where the infiltration looks more like a SEAL team rather than smoke bombs and cartwheels everywhere. Guys boosting each other onto rooftops, and crossbows opening the action until everything below was too mixed up to tell their important targets from the villagers, THEN switching to swords and other weapons.
"Wooozuah!! Whooaaa!!!" The sound of victory and that symbol to defend there village and Honor is their soul purpose. The sword is not just a simple weapon to them.... its the answer to life's questions. Their sword represents their soul... and they will live... and die by it. A Powerful statement sent to those who sent these guys to kill Katsumoto.
What a great movie!! Top 10 best movies of all time and Trom Cruise at its finest. Always loved that movie. Can someome tell me how was the reception in Japan?
The Avenger at Ilipa It's a trick question because the Law of Conservation of Ninjutsu says that the more ninjas there are, the weaker they are. This movie is a good example of that rule in effect.
For those who complain about any historical "inaccuracies" this movie was very much based on a real man. A French officer who fought for the shoguns forces.
I think the historical inaccuracies have more to do with the role of samurai in Japan during it's "westernization" and their motivation. It also doesn't help that, while very cool, samurai and ninja were not some sort of equivalent gangs warring. Ninjas were capable fighters but their specialization was infiltration and intelligence gathering, at most assassination. For them to take part in a raid like this would be considered far to out in the open and far too much an equal engagement. They would have done everything in their power to make sure it didn't go down like this at all, much less voluntarily relinquish their only advantage. This would be like spies choosing to get into a firefight with army rangers or navy SEALs. But this story is loosely based on an amalgamation of a couple foreigners who were able to survive the isolationist policy of Japan.
@@stephenwest6738 I alway tought that the ninjas helped infiltrate and the mercenaries ,ronin ,desperate poor japanese got paid by the rich dude to attack them
@@stephenwest6738 I do agree it was big balls move of ninjas to go hand to hand combat with samurais who are way more skills in swordsmanship than ninjas. Likely will never happen in reality because it's like hitmen decided to get into firefight with Army Rangers who are well trained for war and experienced in combat.

The samurai really need their roars. Just like when they attacked in the jungle. Only they did it before the battle since they're on the offensive, here they were ambushed so they roared after killing every enemy.

3:17 the glory and honor of the samurai ....how I love them so deeply
The little boy looking up at his father's armor before grabbing his sword to go and fight always get me
One thing about this scene thats just terrific and still admireable at the same time is that one guy that gets an arrow to the throat effectively saving Katsumoto. I understand its life or death for him be he doesnt even flinch like its nothing. His men just sacrifice their own life without a second thought. This just blows my mind.
Ujio is such a boss in this film! That move at 1.08 :P
Three minutes of twenty-eight seconds - still gives me chills, still makes me come back for more.
Why are people saying the ninjas in this scene sucked? They were dropping samurai like bugs in the first bit and were even out-sword playing Kasumoto's guards effortlessly
+PilotW65 and say what u want about Tom ...this scene was perfection ! The sound ..the acting ..the stunt people ..the action ....outstanding !
RB2331 it's a fantastic film and tom is good but seriously re do the story
PilotW65 those people watch too much anime
Ninja is a broad term for a variety of tasks, mostly spycraft and counter espionage. Assassination was a part of the tasks ascribed to Ninjas, but these were probably RONIN swordsmen mercenaries who were attached to the Ninja's attacking force and they fought how they were trained. So they were hired swords for an assassination hit, they're used to fighting out in the open, not sneaking around at night silently. Very few 'ninjas' did that and those that did worked alone or in small groups.
real ninjas were nothing like this.
@@Rixoli well said!
@@Rixoli cheers to that response mate
This really highlights how Ninjas main advantage was stealth and the element of surprise. Algren alerting Tetsumoto to the danger took away a lot of the element of surprise that would have given the Ninjas the advantage they needed to change the entire outcome of the battle. When it became a full fight the experience and fighting skill of the samurai in comparison to the Ninjas became apparently obvious.
This is pretend, you know that….. right?
@@thesweeples3266 You know that ninjas fighting samurai actually happened irl..... right?
One of the reasons this fight was so good was that they took advice to not do it like an '80s-style fight out of American Ninja or the like...this clip comes in a couple minutes into the scene, where the infiltration looks more like a SEAL team rather than smoke bombs and cartwheels everywhere. Guys boosting each other onto rooftops, and crossbows opening the action until everything below was too mixed up to tell their important targets from the villagers, THEN switching to swords and other weapons.
@@grahamyodude Not like that lol, but let's not take films too seriously. Just enjoy them.

The sword is not just a simple weapon to them.... its the answer to life's questions. Their sword represents their soul... and they will live... and die by it. A Powerful statement sent to those who sent these guys to kill Katsumoto.
Very good!!!!
+mrjordanx31 STUPIDA FACKIN NINJA
He said "Mina garoshi da!", which translates to "We killed them all!"
Actually swords were sidearms and samurai prized archery over anything else.
What a great movie!! Top 10 best movies of all time and Trom Cruise at its finest. Always loved that movie. Can someome tell me how was the reception in Japan?
Question of the Day: How many ninja does it take to kill Katsumoto?
None. The Ninja didn't kill him, the machine-gun turrets did.
angryboy2k9
In fact, it was suicide :D
B20C0 He was dying already, he just wanted to deny the Imperials the honour of doing it... that said, technically Algren was the one who stabbed him.
angryboy2k9
It was not about denying the honour it was his wish to die by his own sword.
@@lupohutchington269 Many Ninja were actually Samurai themselves, you know, on the night shift;)
@@Kameleonic I've heard this too. I hadn't heard it from multiple sources and wasn't sure how much credence to give it, but it actually makes quite a bit of sense logically.
This was a choreographed masterpiece! On top of having action had had so much meaning and was a great turning point in the movie.
Katsumoto and Ujio are just ultimate badasses in this scene. Fantastic.
Yep, safe to say this is the best scene of the whole movie I remember when this first came out, I sat through it three times in a row watched it in the Philippines, my wife had to come and drag me out of the theater.
No hay mejor escena q me emocioné tanto como q está y q final con ese grito
2019. I just finished watching this movie on TV and it's STILL my all time favorite Tom Cruise movie.
The rule in media:
A lone ninja is always a badass killing machine, a large group of ninjas are fodder.
It's the Law of Conservation of Ninjutsu
I mean, that goes without saying when they're fighting an army of samurai.
That's why the have to fight the protagonists one at a time
Anime Movie Ninja Scroll approves this comment🤣
The Emperor is paying to have all these Ninjas trained god damnit! And by god he is going to use all of these fucking Ninjas!!!!
Ujio is happy he finally got to use some of those "special" moves he's been playing with for years. Ho often do you get to grab another dude's sword hand and spin him around like a shield?
“Spartans!! What is your profession?!?!” 3:17
Gosh I love this movie. The cinematography is great. The story is good and the music is incredible. Just all around a good movie.
Came here after watching shogun. This is one of the best movies of all time.
When I saw this in theaters, when this seen was over the whole audience went nuts.
Ujio's expression never changed and that dude didn't even break a sweat...fucking badass!! Does anyone know what he yelled at the end of the fight?? I'll buy you a 6er!
No, he says "minagoroshi da!" which means (litterally) "everyone has been killed!" but, is bette translated as "we massacred them/we slaughtered them all!"
Maelarion i was wondering the same thing. thanks for the translation
GC They all yelled because they just leveled up.
He cut through them with the stoic expression of "Now I gotta deal with this shit..."
Velius HAHAHAHA! YES!!
The samurai really need their roars. Just like when they attacked in the jungle. Only they did it before the battle since they're on the offensive, here they were ambushed so they roared after killing every enemy.
what is really amazing is the Tom did a lot of his own stunts in this film. That is really him doing all of rolls, dodging, everything.

The sheer violence that the old samurai rips out his blade at 3:16 has stuck with me for years. Badass
Fear the old man in a profession where men usually die young
But personally I find it especially beautiful that "Bob" was granted the perfect way for a Samurai to die as stated in the Hagakure... in the final battle

I love Katsumoto’s technique how he grabs and grapples with the ninja to land his killing blows and Mia mastery of duel blades
The only thing more jarring that the look on Katsumoto's face when he sees what Algren has become is the look on Algrens face when he realises what he has become.
I really like how a house with walls made of rice paper can block the sound of a waging battle just five feet outside.

Maybe they planned to stay in the shadows as they just wanted to assassinate Gen. Katsumodo.
But when Algren warned everyone. They were forced to engage at that point. No choice once the jig was up.

Such an awesome underrated gem of a masterpiece. The Last Samurai 9/10
Was Katsumoto shocked when Algren saved his life? At the end it looks like he couldn't believe his former enemy was now fighting and bleeding beside him.
Christian Robinson not shocked, he realized at that moment the foreigner and former enemy has become a real friend willing to die for him and his people. An impressive scene shown by great actors.
Remember the vision he had and him saving Algren initially? It was his prophecy coming to life.
