@@JayBates You have a welder! Why don't you weld a small block to a clamp and mark your band saw top so you can set it perfectly every time to stabilize the far side of your fence! Amazing shop I would love to have this kind of set up. I just recently lost most of my tools in a break in and we moved shortly after so have to start all over again. But I have a very small shed built on slab out of concrete block. I think it's maybe 8x10 or 8x12 but it has power and lighting run to it and I live in Florida so I can work on bigger or longer pieces just outside of it. It's going to bea long journey until I can start making things again but my dream is to have woodworking be my main source of income. If you have any tips on starting a business or what is involved in getting a business loan I would be very grateful for any help. Congrats on all your successes!

Jay you were one of the people that inspired me to get into woodworking, I built a furniture business, closed it during Covid and now am a licensed general contractor living life on my terms. Thank you for showing us a way out of the rat race! So grateful ✊🏾
Also, the physical transformation you've made is really awesome. Keep it up 💪🏾

I'm not usually a fan of shop tour videos, but I'm in the process of designing a 40x30 shop, and I'm basing my design/layout on your shop. I appreciate how you decided to walk around the shop in a first "personesque" style which gives me a sense of space. I was literally trying to count your steps from your stations to benches, and back to walls, to give a real world estimate of space. Much appreciated.

Thank you for the complete tour of your "modest" workshop, you only need the Batman cape now that you already have the elevator. I reassure all those who want to create wooden objects and why not sell them, no need for so much space, nor hundreds of thousands of euros of material to create beautiful objects well finished. Good continuation in your splendid workshop!

Simple Safety Tip for your elevator - instead of a single bulb, consider screwing in a two-bulb splitter so that you have the backup of an extra bulb, so that when one bulb burns out, you won't be under the false assumption of the power being off. Great video!

Loving your shop. It shows you take great pride in your alternate, “Custom Creation”. You are truly a creator, both in context, and three dimensional expression. I have always hoped for your success. Thanks for sharing your life’s

I’ve been, and still chopping wood going on 57 years. I only build high end furniture, 99 % exotic figured woods. I had a great shop in Hawaii about as large 5,000 sq feet and it was well equipped. Had to move back to the mainland after 15 wonderful years there.. I must say you certainly have set the bar for having a great, organized , well equipped, beautiful shop. Your narration is spot on as well, glad I stumbled across you TH-cam page. . My best.

It's amazing the journey you've taken from those early days making and selling benches etc to the craftsman you've become and your mantra of reinvest your profits in your tools really shows with this amazing dream shop. I'll be honest though, I think the last couple smaller shops had a more homely feel if you understand what I mean. I love watching your videos, you've come a long way and I hope the sunshine continues to shine on you and your family as you have given so much to alot of people who watch your videos and learn so much. Your an inspiration. A modern day norm.

I had a blank just like that Jake, I bough an inexpensive LED lights (strip) and use scrap acrylic and made a dado in three sides, install the LED’s, cover them with the acrylic and made a table lamp. I wish I had could load a picture so you could see it. Gave it as a gift for Christmas. Total cost $7.00 for the LED’s. 😊

    Jay,
I started using ethanol-free gas in all my 4-stroke devices and no more gumming up, ever. Just a thought.
Super shop, buddy. Just built same footprint with 4x9 CNC and a dedicated 8x18 sealed paint booth. I lost 20% of my "tool floor" but I do so much stain and paint finishing that it was a necessary tradeoff to make a living.
BTW: I bought the same dust collector and Nordfab system as you (because of your video on same) and absolutely love them. What a difference they make.

  • @woodrowsmith3400
    @woodrowsmith3400 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You dawg!!! A 1200 sq ft shop??? Wow. I have 28' x 7'. It works for me, but my fantasy is a 30x40...with the back 10' dedicated to air (compressed and dust collection) and finish, where in a positive pressure atmosphere I can stain and spray in a clean environment, and still go out and make sawdust.
I want to thank you for your videos. I appreciate that you describe your subject with an intelligent and articulate manner, and I have to tell you that even after 30+ years of sawdust manufacturing, you continusly demonstrate to me that I don't know everything...and to me, that's a good thing. I appreciate that you describe your
topic thoughtfully and simply, giving us straight-up info without histrionics and a bunch of 'blab' ( can you say BurbounMoth {sp}? ).
I watch no small amount of vids anymore, and must admit you are among my top 5 sources for true and accurate info. Thank you...for both doing what you do...and for just being you!

I haven't watched your channel in years, and I went through your workshop playlist. Just got to this video. At the beginning of this video, I noticed that you look way healthier. I wouldn't really say that you were unhealthy in the 2nd to last video in this playlist, but it's noticeable for sure.
I agree 100% that nutrition is very important. I started working at a new company in 2021 and they have a great culinary team. Their food is healthy and good. I've always been in decent shape, but my numbers (cholesterol, blood pressure, etc) have gotten better every year without me changing anything. I think it's 100% because of the food because I don't exercise much.
Good luck to you and sorry about the Lions. Michigan has had a pretty good year in sports, so there's that. I'm from Ohio... :)

I like the idea of the spray cart with shellac in it. I would have thought it would clog as well. That's one area where I still paint by hand as I hate cleaning up spray gear LOL. I might give this a go in future.
The lifts a great idea. Never thought of using a winch as an elevator instead of stairs - great idea!
And the wood storage is interesting. I know the pain of trying to get a piece from the bottom of a rack. I can see standing up would require less space, but I still reckon I'd just shove stuff in front and wouldn't be able to access it anyway LOL.
    Thanks for the tour

For the hardware being scattered everywhere when you set up the sawhorses, you need a magne-can. It's a strong magnet glued to the end (not the side) of a stick, inserted into a cleaned-out steel can. Pass it over the floor like you would with a vacuum wand, then hold it over a container, grip the can, and pull the stick, and the steel bits fall off. Repeat as needed.

Thank you very much Jay Bates you has been a great inspiration for me like other people on TH-cam, I am in the process to building my own woodshop , and I hope that one day I will serve as an inspiration for other people as well, as you have been for me!!

Hey Jay what a super shop tour. I will try to replicate some of your ideas while rearranging my workshop here in Italy. Unfortunately many of the stuff you have are out of EU market (rockler dust collector and quick change ones). will sort with some other crappy ones available here... very nice shop, and outside as well.

Same issue with my bandsaw fence - I back mine up with a magswitch. Great video, your presentation style keeps things interesting. Also, Hail State! Class of '15.

Hey Jay, great new shop ! Love the Paulk style assembly table, I have an MFT table with the 20mm dog hole system but I also use the Festool or micro jig dovetail clamps which slip right into the dog holes as long as there’s no support rails in the way . I’m sure this comment was already made but I haven’t looked through the comments, if so sorry for wasting your time. Have a great weekend, love the daughter and dog pics !

Heck of a shop that's to dedicated to make personal stuff and not make money. Nice video, thanks

You sure have come along way Jay, all power to you man. I remember watching your first videos, when there were very few woodworking content creators.
Steve Ramsey and the crew, Laney Shaughnessy, Steve Carmichael and yourself.
I took a hiatus from woodworking fir the last 7 or 8 years and just now setting up a shed/workshop
Keep on keeping on Jay, congratulations on all your success you certainly deserve it.
I remember how stoked you were when you had one of the apartments to work in, now you're in a hangar 🤘☺️👍

I have a good thought.... for the drawer/cabinet pulls, I would recommend either removing them all, and use your cnc router to cut or engrave a number for each drawer, so that when you need someone to grab something its easier... its in drawer 23.... or T9, B7. Just a thought. Nice shop! Some day... hopefully in the very near future... without getting into trouble lol...
