Invention in C Minor (composed by Jason Patera; performed by Marianne Parker)

In my 20’s, I challenged myself (a jazz and rock musician) to compose a one-minute piano piece in the style of Bach.
I was happy with the result, and I always thought I would one day learn how to actually play it.
My 20’s turned into my 30’s, and then my 40’s, and then my piano playing days ended abruptly in 2022.
So, I was thrilled when the formidable Marianne Parker agreed to learn and record my little piece. It’s the first time I’ve ever heard a human play it.
I believe that anyone, regardless of ability or experience, can have a personally transformative experience immersing themselves in a creative act. That was definitely the case for me all those years ago, trying to emulate how Bach built melodic and harmonic structures.
And, all these years later, Marianne’s mastery and enthusiasm have both moved me deeply. The same goes for Jack Murray, who engineered the session, and Nathan Urdangen, who prepared the sheet music. We are all fortunate that artists like them exist in this world.
