- This is a look back on George McGinnis's Hall of Fame career. Built like a modern NBA player McGinnis would have success terrozing the boards while having a multitude of ways to put the ball in the basket. Which helped him earn several all-star appearances and even an MVP.

A lot more of the ABA should be shown so today's fan could see how great the players were in that league. It should not be forgotten.

Big George brought the Sixers back to a respect team..We are grateful for GM and will never forget him.
Big George was the best high school basketball player I ever saw. In his final game, the annual Indiana - Kentucky All Star Game,, he dominated the second game of the event In Louisville KY by scoring 53 points and grabbing 30 rebounds, records that still stand today. He could have scored 60 but missed nine foul shots, including the front end of five one-and-one opportunities. His biggest mistake imo was wasting two years at Indiana University … he could have signed a pro basketball contract immediately following that game. Thank you for this video, and for keeping alive the legacy of one of the forgotten greats.

I'm old enough (almost 69) to have watched these guys; I saw Dr. J and Charlie Scott with the Virginia Squires (and followed the Docter with the Sixers, when in grad school in Philly). I saw a number of the ABA guys into the merger (my High School team, Huguenot in Richmond, played against Moses when he was in Petersburg), and that was an interesting time in basketball. I subscribed because you have such thoughtful analysis of the older players and the newer players, and your even-handed comparisons of them. Thank you for your love of the game, and your judicious evaluations of players, some of whom time otherwise might have forgotten. They are an important part of NBA history.
George McGinnis was a beast and a great all-around player despite being a smoker. McGinnis could handle the ball, shoot his one handed jumper, and he was a helluva rebounder. He's one of the great players from that era.

I grew up watching McGinnis play. His double-pump was the most mesmerizing shot I've ever seen. He was always a class act and a Hoosier legend who also played basketball
In his prime, before all the injuries, McGinnis was a truly great player.
Could do anything and everything on the court. Score inside and outside, rebound, handle the ball like a guard, all of it. Way ahead of his time. Would excellent at the
3 in today’s game. The
76ers we’re a laughing stock before he got there. In his first year there, his first in the NBA, he almost single-handedly turned them around. Doug Collins still talks about it today.
As an aside, McGinnis played tight end for Washington HighSchool, as well as basketball. He was All State at the position. Several Big Ten football coaches, including Michigan State’s Duffy
Dougherty, said that he was the best tight end prospect they’d ever seen. The best comparison might be a
6’8 version of Hall Of Famer Antonio Gates.

My Favorite ALL TIME Sixer. The One Hand Swoosh Shot was AWESOME! George and Dr J. on the SAME Team was like having Jordan and LeBron on the SAME Team. They were Awesome Together!
Good information and background on “Big George” another one in a long line of ABA Superstars who were ahead of their time and more talented, skilled and physically gifted than some of their NBA counterparts pre merger. McGinnis was unique not only for his incredible physique and strength, agility and quickness but his style of play with his wingspan and massive hands which allowed him to shoot those one handed jumpers (not sure if any coach ever discouraged him from doing it that way)- Dr.Js hands were bigger if you can picture that - hence one of the distinctions between the two. McGinnis once scored 42 points and grabbed 42 rebounds as a Pacer! I recall seeing that box score from an ABA game - it wasn’t a mistake- that guy was something else. Side note: McGinnis tried to jump from ABA to NBA by signing a contract with the NY Knicks in the early 70s (Coach Red Holtzman loved the guy) but the 76ers complained to the league (NBA) because they held the original draft rights - so there he went! It can be argued that if “Big George” had better strength and preventative training his career wouldn’t been shortened.
Yes if he had taken better care of himself he would have extended his career and be mentioned with all the other NBA greats.

That year at IU was awesome, I was at about half of the home games. His first run with my beloved Pacers was what really got me hooked on pro ball. Fortunately, my family had (and still does) have season tickets since 1967. So you know where I was! Thanks for this my man. The ABA was an awesome league.
I was in high school when McGinnis was kicking butt. His high school Washington team and my Shortridge team had legendary battles. He also was a heck of a pitcher in baseball and could have been a pro tight end in football. Mc Ginnis was a pure beast.
McGinnis was a great player but the Indiana Pacers wanted him back home even though he slowed down. He was traded for Alex English who led the NBA in points scored in the whole decade of the 1980s

I was freshman at Indianapolis Cathedral when George was senior at Washington. He was a monster in high school in both basketball and football--in which he was a five-star prospect. Cathedral "won" the city football championship (there were no playoffs; the champion was decided by sportswriters' votes), and the only blemish on our record was a tie against Washington in which McGinnis--a 6'8", 240-lb. tight end--just dominated our DBs. In basketball, he and Steve Downing on the same team were just unfair.

I WENT TO MY FIRST PROFESSIONAL GAME JANUARY 1973 NEW YORK NETS AND THE VIRGINIA SQUIRES AT THE NASSAU COLISEUM I WAS 14 YEARS OLD AND I REMEMBER SEEING GEORGE ICEMAN GERVIN FOR THE FIRST TIME ICE WAS 19 YEARS OLD I FOLLOWED ICE ALL THE WAY TO THE HALL OF FAME MAY 1996 I'VE NEVER RECOVERED FROM THAT EXPERIENCE ICE IS THE GREATEST EVER

It's somewhat amazing that the 76ers didn't win a Ring with George, Dr. J, Lloyd Free, Doug Collins, Henry Bibby, Darryl Dawkins & Caldwell Jones. Hell, Kobe's Dad, Joe Bryant, was a backup on those teams.
People forget about George. Before he dominated in the ABA, he was great at I U. The OSU play by play man said, "George is so tough, he could go bear huntin' with a twig." That's about it. With the 76ers, Nuggets, very good -but his chain smoking caught up with him.
Back then the Sixers adding Doc and McGinnis was akin to the Clippers getting Paul and Kawhi! No team could match up with both.

I think your viewers might like a look at Big Macs Washington H.S. team over all. (And team over a 5-6 yr period)The coach was a beast too. But review the other players on that team,its an interesting sidebar to Big Mac that many dont know. In fact the years around 1965 to 71,washington had Several college all Americans,and 1st round NBA picks.
Another interesting story is the small county of Morgan County home to Monrovia and Martinsville high schools and in particular,UCLAs John Wooden and Indiana University who both played and coached at the schools and later found even bigger fame as college coaches. These schools were very small. My graduating class had 63 ,the average was 110-120 a year. Interesting story there for those into sports history as some things that are just uncanny.

Proof that there isn't one proper shooting form. As long as yours work and is effective. But I can't imagine myself shooting the ball without using a guide hand like McGinnis lol... Bob McAdoo is another great player from the 70s that had a strange shooting form. He used two hands, but it looked like he was using both hands to push the ball out, instead of using one hand as a guide. And finally, as soon as the ball left his hands he would flail his arms to the sides or bring them immediately down with no follow through, so you always got the impression that it wouldn't go in, yet it did consistently. One of the greatest shooting big men of all time.

I know you are busy with your job right now, but I heard that you meant to say Ralph Simpson not Sampson as fans would be confused for that one. Anyways, McGinnis was the LeBron of the ABA that fans was comparing to and what the NBA's Pacers fans didn't know that McGinnis is the real Pacers franchise record holder for most points in a game when he scored a career high of 58 points in the ABA while Reggie Miller came in second with 57 points, but holds the Pacers' NBA franchise record. RIP George McGinnis.
Bob Dandridge was a small forward, not a guard. Also, the player was Ralph Simpson, not Ralph Sampson.
McGinnis, Spencer Haywood, and Bob McAdoo were 3 guys who dominated in the 70's and then seemed to fall off a cliff around age 30. Pretty sure drugs was the cause of Haywood's. Guess it was injuries for McGinnis. Not sure about McAdoo though he did have a resurgence with the Showtime Lakers earning 2 rings coming off the bench.

At some point McGinnis started releasing his jump shot on the way down and he was never the same player.
I watched him in his prime, in the ABA. He was better than Malone and Duncan. He is on my all-time team--Mcginnis, Erving, Chamberlin, Jordan, and Oscar Robertson (who I believe is the best basketball player to ever play in the NBA).

I grew up watching Big George. He had a unique style. Still, I must share what I observed and what the statistics reveal. Despite excellent percentages the first couple of years in the ABA, he shot at a very low percentage for the whole of his career. 41% for the 75-76 season, for example. His perimeter shot was broke and it soon became apparent to everyone in the NBA. People would blatantly lay off him, take away the drive (he could ONLY go to his right, no left whatsoever), and dare him to shoot. That’s how it was. No amount of highlights of ONLY his makes can change that. Continuing on the percentages theme, go look at his 3-point shot percentages: they were similar to Charles Barkley, if you know what I mean. Lastly, take a look at his free throw percentages: some of his seasons his free throw numbers were similar to Shaquille O’Neals. The end result? Much inefficiency and ultimately, many wasted possessions throughout a game. This proved particularly costly at playoff time. What could George McGinnis do? He could run the floor unlike any forward that had played the game previously. He was a new breed of player. He was a window into the future of the game: ‘bigs’ that could move like a guard. Finally, seeing him struggle all throughout the finals in 77 (it was actually throughout most all of the playoffs that year) was difficult to watch. He was one of my favorite players and I wanted to see him do well. Unfortunately, the finals against Portland, especially the last four games, would be how many people remembered his career.
You have to remember he had a groin injury so he couldn't perform to the best of his abilities in the finals that year, Plus the last game he did come up big with a 26 point effort. Every player has a weakness and Big Mac was no exception. Could he have done any better with his game ? Yes I'm sure he thinks about it now but everyone wishes they could do something different in their life where they could change things. So let's appreciate what the man gave us on the court in his career and don't beat him down because he wasn't perfect. Without him who know's if Dr. J would have even come over to the 76er's .

but there is a stain in his legacy..he failed hard to show up in the playoffs in 77 and 78 and was the major reason along with Free and Dawkins that the Sixers locker room was toxic demanding first option over Dr J and failing to deliver when it mattered..one can say that the Sixers lost a ring in 77 and Dr J instant NBA dominance and finals mvp with the numbers he put up because of McGinnis shooting a miserable .38 and Free an even worse .30 in the finals and next year conference finals AGAIN!

He choked big time against Portland Bobby gross wore him out, Maurice Lucas destroyed him, he choked in every way imaginable he was invisible by the end of that series. I'll never forgive him or Henry Bibby. They cost Dr J a title that series against the trail blazers George is trash.
