What a beautiful essay! It avoids the immigrant story cliches while being emotional and poignant to many experiences.

Hello. Thank you for uploading such a video; it is useful to hear the thought processes behind the essay. In my view, you could improve the viewer experience by dropping the background music, which I find very distracting. Is there any way to contact you directly? I am about to embark on a career copy editing and proofreading college admission documents, and I would like some advice on how to help students with their essays.

It would be OK to take a more literal approach like you're saying. This student chose a more figurative approach and it worked really well.

When writing a personal statement, it actually doesn't really matter which prompt you choose (especially because Common App prompt option #7 asks to write for a "prompt of your choice". Real admission readers aren't looking for how closely you answered the personal statement prompt--instead, they're trying to get a sense of who you are overall as a person/incoming student to their campus. They're trying to get an idea of the skills/qualities/values/interests that you will bring to campus with you.
Real admission readers (and I) thought this essay did a wonderful job of those things.
