I just started diggin up rows in my yard yesterday. When I saw the no dig beds you made with the bark mulch pathways I really liked that, I think im going to have to do some beds like that as well. My rows may become beds, or a bit of both. Your channel always makes me want to go out and garden, but its 3:26am so I guess thats not an option hahaha. Everythings looking good, its all coming together. I can relate to your feeling of it being a slow project my yard is a definite project.
I can just hear the tinking of those bottles as you mow! lol I just put my herbs out, which i didn't know i could have over wintered here in London. I am kind of regretting throwing the baby snails that emerged from the herb pots, into the garden as i have seen a lot of young teenagers on the utility/ conservatory windows in this wet weather! I should have known to put them in the main composter to keep them occupied! As it is so mild i have also put out my first fabric pot of white Cara? potato. It was a Tesco white potato i started in mid Dec, so it's about 2ft tall overall. It is currently 2/3 full and now it is outdoors, i can remove it from the washing up bowl and fill it right up. I won't be too sad it it fails as it is just a test and i have 7 desirees chitting up on the breakfast bar. My sugar snap peas are about 15 - 20 cm now and i germinated 2 runner bean plants, from my kids school project from last year. For some reason i thought they brought home plants the last half term but maybe it was Easter? Somehow they are surviving in 12cm pots and are over 1m/ 3fft now! lol I still think runner bean plants are much better for the school kids to grow than sunflowers and they are faster growing and much more hassle free and provides accessible foods, that they can recognise. I am just an idiot thinking that peas and beans grew at the same time. lol I guess i can yolo it and up pot until i need to transplant the tomatoes. I have sowed 30 (5x 2x 3 varieties) of tomatoes. I think it is 20 i can plant out in the garden and the rest i will give away or make more of an effort to get the to the school fair to raise money for them. When i say effort, i had them ready last year but as i suffer with extreme social anxiety and now agoraphobia since lockdowns, things get a bit awkward and not just me. My courgettes and sweetcorn are also doing well for new varieties this year. Black beauty is out performing Zucchini courgettes and The swift F1 sweetcorn is slowly growing. Great first rounds. I need to plant some more seeds in the flower tray as some didn't come up but the lobelia is looking good. I thought my sister gave me a dust packet but no, they are doing well. My Mother in Law passed away last Feb on the IOW and on our last trip there during the school holidays we did another plant rescue but from outside. We rescued an allium type of plant that has big blue flowers, almost like a big blue amaryllis. I cut away the old soggy leaves but there are a lot of babies in the pot. It's too warm now to separate, etc. I might top up the soil and see if they survive. She has lots of these tubs in the garden but i have seen them in the ground with big long green leaves and tall thick stems. I would like to think that we have saved some whatever they are. On a positive note, our pearl oyster mushroom spawn finally arrived 24 days after ordering! We boiled the straw at the weekend, with the old stuff and are planning to mix it in and refill some old bird seed bags. Will reuse old 200l compost bags, if i can find them instead. Going to put them in that part broken under-bed plastic box that i was using as a potting tray. We used a cardboard box for the mushrooms last year, which would have been fine if the oversized plastic bin bag hadn't leaked in the bathroom... We still got some mushrooms and was much better than the first batch on the asparagus bed, when we had a dry spring and heatwaves... You know there is nothing wrong with moving those empty raised beds..A great IG post or thumbnail would be a before shot and you using it as a picture frame for yourself. As in this was as useful before as it was a picture frame but also this is how your skills put it to good use. If that makes sense as a before and after theme? You can talk about what a raised bed is and how it works. Why an empty frame isn't Ronseal. Wasn't there that gardener that talked about horse shoe designs or key hole raised beds? You could also talk about joining them together, removing the mid joining sections and adding long T plates to connect them. You could also talk about stacking beds for people with mobility issues who can't bend down. Anyway, i'm waffling! lol Looking forward to seeing what you do with the two plots this year! All the best!
Hi JB probably a good idea not putting holes in your gutter because as the roots grow they make their way through the holes making sliding them out difficult when planting.
You could cut some holes in the bottom of the taped ends of your Pea gutter for drainage? I actually use the Containerwise deep 40H cell trays (you showed off the 28H variant) for my Peas, and I still bung 3 individual Peas into even those much smaller cells, which they don’t seem to mind. It’s the Pea support structure that I keep varying each year - I must be on v4 of that this year 😜 So much to do though. Like you I have a plan and end up doing a bit of this and a bit of that each garden session. I have a few pallets I need to separate and make some planters out of, but I need working space in the garage for that, so I need to get all my pots, saucers and trays outside. But there is a water butt full of water in the way, so I need to figure out a leaking plug so I can move the water out, so I can move the butt, so I can move the pots, so I can build my planter… etc! 🤣
Ahh that's good to know! Maybe I should have put four plants in each.. I really can't be arsed with making a pea structure but I know I have to at some point 😅 they're such faff!
Loving these regular videos JB! Maybe sowing some sunflowers to plant around the 2 plots would be a good idea ? I'm growing little Leo (dwarf) this year as I'm not a fan of the tall ones 👍
Always a good chuckle, looks like you are right on task with your growing this year! I have not even started any seeds yet. Ahhhhh Hope you and Jess have a lovely day and your weather gets better. Our snow is just starting to melt and we can again see the grass underneath. So excited to see green again!
I love tomatoes im growing 48 varieties this year. we can a LOT of tomatoes. We are also growing Roma, Sungold F1, Brad’s Atomic Grape among others i think it will produce a wonderful harvesting basket. I like all the different colour and sizes.
Oh jb you need to get your compost going so you won’t have to buy so much next year. But having said that it’s not a rule or a law gardening is about you and what you want to do and have. We can be lazy but if we happy what does it matter. But sometimes we have to discipline ourselves in order to make life better for ourselves.I think you doing great. And I love watching 👍🙋🏻
Yay! There’s nothing more glorious than a really good garbage cleanup! It’s pure therapy! Also, in a future life I’d like to name vegetables, especially tomatoes. I’ve got shallots overwintered (in Canada! Wish me luck! Lol!), I’ve planted shallot seeds, and I’m waiting for the seed company to release shallot bulbs. I’m determined, needless to say. Lol!
Nice! Always good to take a step back and just do a couple of jobs a day. I would say peas for your structure and I wasn't impressed with Honeycomb tomato when I grew them but I'd be interested to see what you think 😊
I grew cucumbers last year in March in my un heated poly tunnel. It was totally by accident I sowed them and they were just in a corner and forgot to take them home. They survived just fine even in late frosts with no fleece (I’m in Lancashire) in fact they were the strongest cucumber plants I’ve ever head!
If your not a beetroot fan try the golden variety roasted, it is delicious. My husband and I don't like the traditional beets but really like the golden one.

Tomatoes will germinate in an unheated greenhouse in your neck of the woods at this time of year? That’s impressive. In Yorkshire we’re frightened to put tomatoes out until late May on a good year lol.
I have no idea but I'm going to find out! 😅 As soon as the sun comes out the greenhouses fly up to 30 degrees within just 10 minutes so I'm hoping that'll be enough to get them going. Last frost usually about 4 weeks from now so long as I'm vigilant with cloche and fleece I'm hoping it will be okay. If needs must I can always bring them back home overnight 😅
I’ve been doing lots of sowing due to having so much rain but hopefully I can get out and do some weeding soon. Have you done your Brussels yet, mine have just started germinating when I checked tonight. I do like sitting in the greenhouse sowing when the rain is coming down - my happy place 😊
