JB I know you like to do the no dig thing but sometimes it’s the only thing that works. Been wanting to tell you this for ages. I’m in Australia and I have a full on clay backyard. In full sun. It’s seriously concrete in our hot summer. The only thing that has worked for me is digging in compost. Not to put you off, but after seven years of digging, digging and oh my god more damn digging of endless bags of compost I’m finally at that point where I can do the no dig thing and just chuck a couple of bags of compost on top of a bed and plant stuff. Thank god. This year was the first time I’ve used mushroom compost and my summer veg is going nuts. Go hard on the mushroom compost, it’s good stuff 😊
I have solid Clay JB .When we filled our beds we used 4 bags Top soil 35 ltrs ,4 bags of 80 litres multi Clover compost and 4 bags of manure .Ten years on the soil is soft as anything and easy to plant in to .Each year I top it with homemade compost ,just an inch or too .I get great results and use chicken manure pellets after planting . I might try mushroom compost on my flower garden this year .
I add twice chopped leaves every fall into all my beds, and the remainder into my compost bins. Feed the worms and they will do the work for you. I have miserable hard clay and tree roots. I added raised beds and it takes time but you’ll get there JB. ❤
I've had access to mushroom compost here in Alberta, when the local mushroom farms discard their used bedding and offer it up for free. It's fantastic stuff. You might also want to look into a concept called sheet mulching, from permaculture.
I know exactly how much hard work it is emptying big bags. I bought 3 x XL jumbo bags so even bigger than the ones you had delivered. Absolutely back breaking but worth it JB 😊
Awh I am envious of your lovely mushroom compost - it did look so good on those beds. If my beds looked that good I would definitely not want to mess around forking it in, but if that's what you have to do then you'll just have to spoil how good they look I suppose. JB, by all means use your composts, both of them, but may I make a suggestion? If you plant (only as deep as the seeds' diameters) something like the biggest daikon radish you can find seeds for, or fodder turnips or fodder beetroot, and just let them do their thing and then sit in the bed/s all through late autumn and all the winter long. A good cold spell will kill them, and the roots will decay, leaving organic matter in the soil which the plants have broken up for you. It might be necessary to do this several times in succession to get enough "big root matter" into the soil, but it will spare you some heavy work and some heavy frustration. You might also find the radishes or turnips under the category, "Driller" radishes or "Driller" turnips or beetroot. These big roots are sturdy enough and vigorous enough to break the hard soil and as they decay, they contribute organic matter which in its turn improves the soil structure and texture. Much gardening love from Northeast Ohio (where it's too cold, now for planting much in the way of annuals!) 😊💚💚💚💚💚😊

As a longtime California subscriber, I'm always thinking you're stingy when adding things like composted amendments and soil enrichment to your rock hard clay allotment dirt. It's so wonderful you're realizing soil is best when you can actually put hands only in soil to dig and plant. You are a knowledgeable gardener that will soon have your best year ever!
Floculating Hell! I would have to broadfork the surface before I put that beautiful stuff on - my OCD would just rebel if I thought the claybed might survive!!!❤😂

You’ve still got some nice looking red chilli’s in that greenhouse. My Brussels sprouts are not great. I’ve got 1 plant with a few on and 3 plants with none on.

Topping the soild with compost / manure and mulching really is key for healthy soil. If thats's not enough though I highly reccomend using perlite and / or plant charcole. Perlite really gets air into the soil and helps to loosen it and charcole helps building hummus and stores water / nutriens. You dont even need much, just like 5 to 10 liters per square meter.

Always gardened on clay. Working a new garden, I amend and dig for a few years. Once I have it in fairly good condition, I top dress. But really, looking at your soil, you need to dig it. Lovely bags of compost and soil!
Mushroom compost is supposed to be brilliant, so I can see why you’re pleased with that delivery. My beds are all made from vegetable topsoil. Those jumbo 1200 litre sacks are really awkward to dig out of I found… after 11 of them shovelling around my garden. What an extra challenge having to move it to store it elsewhere .. extra work for you on allotments. Looked fab seeing some in those beds. Let’s hope it does the trick for you. Hope you had a good podcast on those headphones to motivate the shovelling. Good to have the greenhouse sorted so quickly. One less thing to worry about.Was touch and go then for a second 😂
When I first setup my garden beds, I got a 'vegie mix' soil which was a mix of manure, mushroom compost and top soil, and then later I topped up with mushroom compost that I bought in bags. Mushroom compost is really great stuff. You are correct about mixing it in with the clay though. I generally just put it down on top of cardboard and whilst it was still good that way, there are spots where you dig down to the clay and the clay is still hard as. I should have forked it into my clay better, and I suspect it would have been as good as it is in other spots where I can now dig much deeper before I start encountering clay.
My son Nick is in the Navy based in Portsmouth - when he gets time off it takes him about 7 hours to drive up to Whitby to see his little boy Noah 🚗 it's a hike but has to be done
theres so many people with framed beds rather than raised beds . i think its all down to it seeming like a good idea til you realise the cost of filling them. my huge raised beds frame is rotten... roof trusses of my fav pub thats now flats . irreplaceable i,m thinking.
I work in environmental planning & legislation basically - very up and down with busy periods and quieter ones. So some weeks I'll work 50-60 hours, others I can claim it back and just do 30, but we have really flexible working and I work from home 90% of the time so very fortunate!

no offence but you,d not catch me moving compost from one bag to another in another location, only to need to move it again to a final destination. if at all possible not to. your going yo end up like popeye with big muscles . but your allotment will look great . good work

I buy a ton of mushroom compost every year. Brilliant stuff! Only downside is that it causes scab on potatoes. But for everything else it’s great 👍
That makes sense with the lime, I think it's pH which is the main cause of scab!
