      Hello I'm a high school graduate from India. I wanna be a doctor in USA. I am well aware of rigour of a medical school then also I wanna become a doctor. But I was discouraged by the fact that there few medical schools that accept international students. I will be doing my pre med from USA so that it'll be easier to apply and be eligible to medical school. So I wanted to know that if the medical schools accepts international students who have done their pre med from us college and have a 4.0 undergraduate GPA , a 522+ MCAT score and some clinical experience in the undergraduate. Please provide me this information that if a international student can do MD from USA.

Starting year 1 of medical school now I'm seeing some students that use 5-10 add-ons to ANKI with modifications to spacing intervals. I have so much to learn.

    I use something that I call "layered learning". I'm not sure if there's another name for this, I haven't read about it anywhere, I just came up with it over time.
    I've found that I can recall information better if I have multiple "paths" with which to access it. This applies both in exam and in the long term. I start by learning through comprehension. Then I draw out diagrams and simplified notes and memorise the position of the information relative to other pieces of information, sort of like a "map" (I do need to reinforce this quite a bit though, and it fades within a year unless I reinforce it regularly, but it works well for quick memory retrieval in exams)
    Then I do the anki or flash card spaced repetition so I can practice retrieving the information at random, so it's not necessarily linked to the notes or graph layout, this helps me to recover the information even faster, and I only need to think of the "map" if on exam day I can't recall it individually.
    Then there are songs, memes, smells, colours etc. I save these mostly for lists of things, or for equations since I struggle to recall those sorts of things. An exam would be "KP Crisps Only For Good Students". It means Kingdom Phyllus Order Family Genus Species. I learned it more than a decade ago and I can still remember it now. Another example is OILRIG, which means Oxidation is Loss, Reduction is Gain (of electrons). I have similiar sorts of things for stuff like reactivity series, equations for calculating concentration, etc. Even when the memories fade, this sorts of memes and songs and phrases remain and allow me to relearn the information without a book, and recall in an exam even years down the line.
    Finally there is reinforcement, which is mostly for equations or techniques. Sometimes even if I can remember a difficult equation, I tend to make mistakes in practice, like confusing a 150% increase with base value x 1.5, rather than thinking of it as base value + (base value x 1.5), or defaulting to writing "respiration" instead of qualifying it as "aerobic respiration" or "anaerobic respiration". Those sorts of mistakes that come from haste and inexperience can only be overcome through practice. You can use mock tests, but then you waste a lot of time practicing things that you don't even find difficult. It's worth doing some, but you should also try just practicing the stuff you find hardest a lot, there are usually sites with questions on them, and question generators online. I find I remember those silly Chemistry equations much better if I do 100 questions of each of them, randomly generated, each week, and aim to beat my previous weeks score. Doing a mock test 1-3 months after your first attempt will also help you to ensure you have ironed out those other sorts of mistakes like the respiration thing, to ensure it doesn't reoccur. it's not even a bad idea to do it again a year after you finish your exam, to keep the foundation of your knowledge strong.

    Im currently taking the Princeton Review Course and tried out Memm and tbh it is very helpful in some sections.. slightly less than others obviously due to the need to practice physics and what not but OVERALL, This is not a comprehensive way to study for the mcat ( I don't think they claim it is but yea). HOWEVER, it fills in the gaps the PR leave out absolutely perfectly, if its not explained in the PR well.. its explained in Memm very well. Also I appreciate how Memm uses vocabulary that are actually used on the practice exams because the Vocab in the PR feels out dated some how. An example being in the PR an Enzyme called RNA-dependent DNA polymerase is discussed.. no other names are given .. in Memm and on the practice exams its called Reverse Transcriptase.

    I commented this on here bc there’s a higher chance of you seeing this :)

    Hey Kevin! What would be the date ranges memm is useful for? Like can you use it if you're 1yr, 6months, 3months, or a few weeks away from a test date? Thanks!

    • @MedSchoolInsiders
      @MedSchoolInsiders  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's pretty flexible. We find most of our users from the beta period found it most useful around 1-6 months out, which is why we use those subscription lengths. Once you purchase, you also have the option to extend your subscription if you need additional time.
      If you're only a couple weeks out from your test, your best bet is going to be practice tests/questions. Spaced repetition like Memm would be beneficial for targeting your weak areas, but practice tests close to your real test are the top priority.

    Do you need to be familiar the content of MCAT before using this? I didn’t have biology in my undergrad and many canadian schools don’t need prerequisites just the MCAT, so I was wondering if I’d be able to use this without any university knowledge in a certain subject. I mean, will it teach me from scratch?

    • @MedSchoolInsiders
      @MedSchoolInsiders  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out the free trial. It's best used for dedicated MCAT study once you've completed the prereqs, but it could also help one study for their prerequisite courses

    • @mariamvlogs6224
      @mariamvlogs6224 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does help to be familiar with content before starting (e.g. I did better the second time around with certain concepts like metabolism because I had taken the class) but it is really not necessary to take undergrad classes for the sole purpose of targeting the MCAT - with prep books + dedication and time, you can definitely self teach yourself the important concepts, although it doesn't hurt to have that exposure in undergrad

    Should I take my MCAT after sophomore year or junior

    • @caileytalbot8294
      @caileytalbot8294 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This really depends on each person and your timeline for applying to medical school! If you want to go to medical school straight out of undergrad, you should aim to take the MCAT after Sophomore year. The end of Junior year is when you'll start applying to medical schools. Applications generally open in May and you can submit them starting in June. You could take the MCAT in May or June and then submit them but it takes around 4-6 weeks to get scores so you'd be in a time crunch and you wouldn't have the opportunity to retake the MCAT if you're not happy with your score.
      We have some articles about this on our MedSchoolInsiders.com blog. And better yet, our Premed Roadmap just launched the other week! medschoolinsiders.com/all-courses/premed-roadmap-to-medical-school-acceptance/

    Can we use this to study for the OAT?

  • @nightshockplayz5894
    @nightshockplayz5894 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The MCAT requires thinking more than content. Many and a majority of students struggle with CARS rather than sciences. As much as we focus on learning science, spending no time refining CARS can be disastrous.
    I think the best way to approach the MCAT is by question based learning with practice exams and learning tools such as UWorld to practice concepts that you made mistakes on during the practice exam. The main reason one would need to review content for real is if they did not take the class initially. Other than that, trust that you learned most of what you needed to and challenge yourself with questions to find details you may have forgotten and getting them down again. In the end, the exam is more about addressing weaknesses than just reinforcing strengths. Within sections is easier, but between science and CARS sections, it is more complicated.

    • @MedSchoolInsiders
      @MedSchoolInsiders  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Practice questions are crucial and often underutilized by students who only use them at the end.
      However to suggest that the MCAT doesn’t require content review or memorization is naive and misguided.
      Source: scored 99.9th percentile on the MCAT and have tutored hundreds of students to stellar scores as well

    • @nightshockplayz5894
      @nightshockplayz5894 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MedSchoolInsiders I think I should have clarified reviewing the questions you missed to get content you may have forgotten or missed. I find that doing questions first is more important than just doing the recall with sheets and cards at the beginning. This will only get you so far with my experience.
      Another issue I would like to bring up that I just remembered is costs. Something that makes some students focus on preparing with lower quality resources and potentially underperforming on the real exam is the cost of resources beyond what they can afford. I get Anki is free (with an Android or a Computer), but aside from Jack Westin, a few third party party practice exams, and some guides, it is really difficult for some people to have access to resources. In the end, I am a firm believer that exam preparation should be efficient. Finding weaknesses through application rather than trying to simply memorize and understand first while maintaining costs low. A lot of people jump into these discussions with the assumptions that people have access to everything. This was not originally brought up, just thought it was a good conversation topic that explains discrepancies in scores.
      I get you scored a 99.9%, but preparation companies probably consult people with achievements as such too, and possibly have more time to study the exam in more detail from the way the AAMC does it. Not so much from the content that appears.

    "You won't need to worry about Anki or flashcard apps again." Hasn't this channel been a massive advocate of Anki? I can personally say that Anki *dramatically* changed my scores when I made my own deck with it - suggesting it's not good for MCAT studying is just not true. You guys have always has a ton of great information, but it'd be sad to see pre-meds sacrifice efficiency by throwing away a time-proven and effective study method just because you have a new paid service to promote.

    • @MedSchoolInsiders
      @MedSchoolInsiders  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anki is a great tool, but it has limitations for MCAT test takers. From our user interviews over the last 2 years, we've found that there's a large learning curve with Anki and students either (1) make subpar flashcards that result in less effective learning or (2) get tired of using Anki and give it up altogether, or (3) spend so much time and energy making flashcards that they could have used that time and energy in more effective ways to improve their score.
