  • Is it worth starting Drawabox? Drawabow will teach you what your need to know about drawing, even if you didn’t know what you needed to know to begin with! In this video, I'll take you through my attempt at Lesson 5.
Exercises: Staking organic forms with contour lines, Drawing Animals (Deer, Bears, Squirells, Birds, Elephant, Flying Pig, Gorilla, Camels)
Drawabox aims to teach the fundamentals of art & drawing from a construction based approach. The lessons and exercises are well structured with specific assignments that really focus on understanding objects, as forms and structures, in 3D space and translating that onto a 2D page. Its really trying to change your thinking from what your drawing being flat shapes on a page…to them being forms in three dimensions you are constructing on the page. It lets you explore that concept, again and again, instilling the benefits of practice, but with different topics such as boxes, cylinders, plants, insects, animals & cars.

Drawabox just took the enjoyment out of art for me so I ditched it and now I'm having fun and producing more art than I did before. But if it works for you love more power to ya elbow (it's Black Country, we have weird sayings here lol) xx

I must admit this far in its really wearing thin. I wouldn't necessarily say it's working for me honestly. I think there are a few things I will keep moving forward but I do think it's quiet a stiff way of drawing overall! The next lesson looks really dull, but I will give it look at atleast. Xx

@@louisecreatesart An article on Louise Stigell's blog called 'DIY art school' rescued me from the mathematical world of Drawabox xx

i've attempted drawabox multiple times, but i just couldn't get into it. the drills are very boring and tedious and there were a lot to do for even the first lesson? for me what i've found that suits my learning is having projects that focus on improving different fundimentals or topics that i struggle with.

How far did you get in? Im stopping at this lesson as the rest is just not for me after an attempt! the first and second lessons were ALOT! the next few seemed to fly by and were actually alot more enjoyable for me. I totally agree, i think personalised exercises are the way to go and im more going down this route now, but will probably still try out a few 'course' type things like this.
(Sorry slow reply ive been unwell)

Draw a box is a mixed experience for me 😅 i did enjoy some exercises and lesson, but the drills are really tedious and i remember this mouthwash like yesterday 😂 (i totally freehanded it , i must admit !) I think you can confidently make a bit of twists and modifications in the various exercises to make it funnier for you ❤

100% agree its been a mixed experience for me. I've tried to finish but the next lesson is just...urg. I think this will be the end of my journey with it! The tediousness of some parts is definatly a downfall of it, i think more variety would definatly help!

Well done for sticking with it, Louise, and for adapting it so that it suits you better. Are you also still going on with 'The Artists' Way'?
It's interesting to read the comments of the others on Drawabox. I admit to having been tempted at first, but I'm glad I didn't.

Hi, I am going to continue yes however I've had some health issues which derailed my progress in a huge way and actually I haven't painted or drawn in 3 weeks. I filmed this footage 3 weeks ago but only now have I been able to edit and upload it. This is the longest I haven't drawn since the birth of my second child!
It it very interesting seeing other people's take on drawabox! I'm so skeptical of the next part. It just does not look fun to me!!

@@louisecreatesart Mega-hug, Louise! Health's being a right pest for you at the moment, isn't it! 🫂🤗
Yes, I read the other comments here, and... not exactly encouraging, are they.... I haven't had videos flagged up for me from anyone else, so far., so I don't know what the general thinking is. I keep getting a lot for "The Artist's Life' though, but have only watched a couple. I really don't have the time.
Though I'll finish the 160 page sketchbook challenge in 6 pages from now, the book is a commitment, financial and time-wise, I'd rather not have at the moment. Also, I'm hoping to be well enough to get out for some plein air in a couple of weeks, or a little less!!! 💃
