Hey guys! For those who were wondering why there are no more videos, well, there is a new video! This one is about Set Design Concept Art assignment that I did on Artwod, check it out: th-cam.com/video/4hrkwJchw9g/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8-hLvMSIiaI3JAAh
It's always spooky when a video talks to you directly, by name... :D But it was a fantastic video! Great job on giving such a thorough breakdown of the course, its goals, its considerations - all in 14 minutes!
In fact, these are simple steps in any art school. When I started go to drawing courses, the teacher strongly recommended to "fill your hand" every day - to draw lines and circles. She asked at home hang a large drawing paper on the wall and draw lines with a pencil as often as possible. Because drawing lines by hand, they seem "alive". No ruler, no eraser. Only hardcore and daily practice 😁 At the end of the course, when it was necessary to make a selection of our drawings (in order to enter the university), we all saw our progress. We started with crooked, uneven and shaking lines - and ended up with beautiful academic drawings of plaster heads (Apollo, Aphrodite, David, etc.) Over the years, I lost the skill, but found myself in sketching 😀No rules. You just draw how you like and what you like. I wish you good luck in achieving your goals. We are waiting for you at sketch meetings in uskvilnius again 😉
I think you need to first learn rules to be able to unlearn them later and let yourself go:) And yeah I will try to join the sketch meetings, thanks for the invite! :D
I would also mention how great the 50% rule is. I've seen so many tutorials and they always say things like "don't even think about drawing a face if you haven't learned planes of the head" for example, whereas drawabox actively encourages you to do draw whatever the hell you want outside the course
Oh yeah, that is so true. I hate when some people say that you are not ready to draw this or that. You can actually improve way way faster if you try drawing challenging stuff that is above your skill level.
Is the 50% rule supposed to be something you're really putting effort into, and trying to use the principles that you're currently learning in the Draw a Box curriculum? Or is it just doodling, etc? I'm totally confused
@@dpelpal i think the point of the 50/50 rule is for you to just have fun and to remind you why you're even doing the courses in the first place, it's cause you like drawing (hopefully). So yeah, sketch, doodle, do whatever makes you happy. I think if you stay consistent with drawabox, plus if you study other things like reference images or anatomy etc. Your drawing skill will get better, and soon enough, when you sit down to draw for the other 50% rule, you'll start implementing all the things you've learned without even realizing so dw too much about it, just enjoy the process
It's an amazing site for beginners like me! I've noticed a huge improvement in, not only the way I draw, but also the way I perceive drawing in and of itself. Uncomfortable is a truly inspiring dude!
I am a total novice but the moment the 3-point perspective "clicked" for me whilst learning the Y-method was a real eureka moment. I now see perspective everywhere I look it's such a strange feeling! No more parallel lines - everything converges!
I was in the same boat. Didn't want to just aimlessly follow tutorials. I wanted the structure, someone telling me what to draw and when to draw it. I just paid for a drawing class. I'm still taking it and it's done wonders for exposing me to everything about drawing, identifying my strengths and weaknesses and coming out of it, will have more direction in what I need to focus on.
thanks, i needed this, i'm just starting the course and was always that thought of "is this going to be like the others" but thanks for the feedback and well i'll continue with it.
I'm so glad to finally hear your story about this challenge, I was following your progress for a while (as you might have noticed:D). Very smooth and informative video as well. Keep going (both with the lessons AND the TH-cam stuff) - it's just so satisfying to see your drawings getting better every day. Gives me hope, because I have the same struggles you did. Gl hf!
Wow, Meandi! I'm also an aspiring artist and I love playing and singing music! Thanks for your video! I accidentally bumped into a youtube video with this guy praising the Drawabox course. And after I've seen your video, I'm even more sure that that course is exactly what I need. So, thanks again!!!
This is surprisingly great editing/video production quality. I myself am looking forwards to learning something I have been fearing for much of my life. That being art, of course.
Fun fact about "Drawing from shoulder" because 7:14 just reminded me about it: When I was way younger, like 16 or maybe even 14, I attempted to follow the drawbox tutorial and tried REALLY hard to draw with my arm rather than my wrist/elbow, to the point where I overexerted my shoulder so much I'm pretty sure I permanently fucked up some muscles in my back (Teres minor/major maybe? Feels like that general area). Thankfully this does not cause any pain but every so often I feel like my shoulder blade falls lower than it's supposed to, and I have to do a few arm stretches to get it back in place. Still, the drawing technique of using your whole arm rather than elbow/wrist has definetely helped me to lvl up as an artist, so like, that's a fair trade imo. Also, thinking back on it the thing that *really* did me in was probably my posture while sitting, rather than the mere act of drawing from shoulder, because i used to sit like a damn goblin perched on a stool 5 feet away from my desk and with my arm outstretched to my tabled
Started drawabox a day ago, exactly like how you were, self taught without proper guidance, was looking for a mentor and to build upon those skills. thank you for sharing your perspectice.
I haven’t used drawbox in ages but one thing that I still definitely used thanks to them was drawing straight line with shoulders xD. I think I might get back into it after seeing this video lol.Spiked this little motivation inside of me 😂
Drawing with your shoulder isn't the only way. It depends on the circumstances and how much precision you need. For instance, you're not going to do detail work with shoulder strokes. As for the ghosting method. It's great to learn accuracy, but with practice you don't need to ghost. You need to be able to draw with your wrist, elbow, and shoulders. For tighter figure drawings, I use shoulder for the gesture and work my way down to the wrist for the final detail.
It’s pretty wonderful that DrawABox is free!! I’ve seen so many videos of people complaining about its intensity, so this video was a refreshing change 💛
Thank you! I am just now trying to decide how much I want to commit to Drawabox and I'm happy to hear how it is going for you! Also, I love little Yoda.
Drawabox is a great course, I tried it once and was very satisfied with it, but got struggled with texture lesson and put it aside for a while. Well, maybe it's time to face your demons again. Thanks for the video though!
I watched another video of a person reviewing Drawaboox and she struggled with the texture lesson too. I'm glad that I found out about this from her and you because I know that there might be some parts that are harder than others.
great video I was wondering If I should get into Drawabox but now Im sure ill start it ! so thank you !! I hope you will make a part 2 when you finish the full course C:
I had no idea that it was meant to be taken over the course of potentially years or that you could get actual feedback. I've been meaning to take it for a while since a lot of the artists who inspire me have done it, but this video definitely makes me more sure that I want to do it soon.
Oh yeah, this course takes time and it's best that you don't rush it and pace it out. This way you will actually learn way faster compared to trying to speedrun this (it's a paradox, but that's how our brains work). I'm planning to do another video about science of learning later maybe. Glad you liked the video.
Drawing with my arm is still something I struggle with. For yeeeaaars before I got my tablet screen, I had a bamboo fun. It is...tiny. You could probably fit three or four of their screens in the space of the tablet I have now. I literally did not have the real estate to move my arm to make lines, and I primarily drew like that anyway. So my bad habit was compounded. I've not broken that habit yet, but I will. With gutso and determination (eventually). xD
Shit man, I feel like giving drawabox another go. I quit after getting onto textures (lesson 2). I could make some pretty damn clean lines by the end, but I didn't get the 250 box challenge. I did it, but the objective flew over my head. I didn't feel comfortable rotating a box after getting to lesson 2.
@@BigDomski In that case I really really recommend to go with official critiques if you decide to give another go. You will receive feedback and will be able to correct your mistakes along the way.
If you want extra help I can give you my discord, for now I can say, when people say “make sure your lines converge to a vanishing point” it made me confused too. What they mean is after making your Y and plotting the dots to make the outside of the box, when you find the point they would meet in the middle, bring the dot a little closer to the center of the Y, for a more perspective/warp look vs isometric. That way it looks better AND the sides converge to a point.
Currently using drawabox, only a week or so in ive done art for fun for a few years so i thought i would know what he was gonna say going into lesson 0, but i was wrong in the beginning i didnt really think ghosting was gonna work out for me but after a few days i noticed just how straight my lines were becoming. It really is a Mr.Myagi method while i only do about an hour or 2 a day im looking to the future of the course and im trusting the process
I've only just started. I'm amazed that I can now draw a straight line from point to point and it's because of ghosting which I didn't think I could do. Once I made up my mind to try ghosting it made a huge difference. Today I've been trying to draw ellipses between lines. It's a bit trickier but I feel like my eyes, brain and body are starting to connect. How are you going? How far have you got?
I feel like this course is going to be hell itself for me. As a perfectionist, I want everything to be perfect, but I think it will be good for me to learn to be a little less careful about my art.
I think You're only a perfectionist, because you identify yourself as that. Don't be afraid to try something new and fail often, that's how you improve!
I don't understand this "but it's final on ink!" point. Just like.. don't undo? Then it's still final. Unless you're concerned about people not having the commitment to not undo. Sure, digital tools are to "make things faster", but what's the actual difference if I draw on paper vs. tablet if I don't use fancy things like stabilization, undo, layers, or the like? That said my main issue with the "use fine liners" is that it just delays the step of getting used to the tablet. I'd rather get that out of the way earlier rather than later. And that's definitely a factor too. If I draw on tablet I still need to get used to it, liners on paper is more intuitive right off the bat and when I compare the two my liner lines are every so slightly better, and I overshoot less with those. But again, I need to learn that on tablet eventually anyway, so might as well get it out of the way. I get it could kill someone's motivation though, especially if they end up feeling like "I should buy a more expensive tablet" The one point that makes sense to me is that you can't submit it for feedback. I get they don't want to deal with digital for homework. Like, to properly rate the work you'd have to know the tools used, which would involve asking each student about it and knowing all the software and and and. And then the student might go "ah yeah, that's actually just my tablet being bad"
Yes, the commitment to not undo is very hard to develop when you CAN undo. Fineliner removes that entirely. But you do have a very good point, getting used to the tablet drawing is also a very important thing. I personally remember getting good with a fineliner, but not being able to replicate it on the tablet. Nowadays I mostly draw on ipad, so that issue is gone.
@@MaakaSakuranbo To me it is really hard not to do something that is already a habit. On procreate undo is two finger tap. I remember two finger tapping while drawing something on sketchbook traditionally lol.
@@meandidraws That's fair hah. I guess I haven't built that big a habit of it yet (besides I found the two-finger tap kinda annoying and instead just pressed the undo button with the pencil). But yeah, I suppose that's a good point since some students might've built such a habit already.
Thank you! glad you like it, music is my main thing, this is more of a side thing. I will make youtube videos on this channel here and there, but it probably won't be consistent, so if you don't wanna miss it, hit that notification bell:)
I have thought of that previously, but I probably won't be able to do a video for each lesson, because it's been a long time since I finished the course and shooting, editing, scripting so many videos would be insanely time consuming. BUT, I am planning to do a follow up video about drawabox, where I will try to discuss each lesson briefly.
thnakyou so much i was hesitating to take this course becoz i want to learn digital art but after watching your video i will definitely take this draw abbox course and i'll do it with traditonal tools thanks thankyou so much seriously after watchig your video its easy to understand also
Thanks, I always want to do it in the fastest way, since I am 14 years old and I am in school, but sometimes I forget that, I am 14 years old, and at that age I already know all this, I know that I am doing well, very well.
As a maths student I have one issue with what drawbox teaches only one, it has exasperated my ability to spend hours at a time drawing fractals, agonising over precise perspective (not this one so much I just can't not) and for biology trying to understand the 3d form of eukaryotic cells. I'm joking it's great, but on a serious note do you find reference for 3d objects in space and know how to draw through them... wait.. I may not have finished the 250 boxes challenge yet.. damn I probably should do that some time.. do I even have that? Eh oh well. Think I saw that challenge the first time I heard of drawbox, proceeded to not read the instructions and draw 250 boxes on some pages, like manipulated and distorted ones but, but the eclipse section sent from the gods I swear. I'm a rambling.
🌸🐲🌸 This was really nice. Well done! I'm currently on a self imposed three year journey to try and improve my art skills as best I can. I was going to start drawabox after a year of doing Marc Brunet's free 1 YEAR PLAN TO LEARN TO DRAW 🚀 (study schedule + exercises) video. But I may start drawabox sooner perhaps. Idk. I'll watch their videos again tho, and see if I think I should change up gears. And do drawabox first, then follow Marc's plan. Or maybe both if I have the free time for it, but I doubt I would be able to. However, I do aim to do both eventually in time. 🌸🐉🌸Thank you for taking the time to make this video sharing your thoughts and experience, with all of us 🌸🐲🌸
Hey! Thanks for watching. Oh yeah I've seen that video of Marc Brunet, I think it's a great idea. Maybe doing both would be a bit too much timewise, but it's doable. I still recommend drawabox, because you can get feedback there. In any case good luck!
@meandidraws I couldn't finish the course cuz I had to study other things BUT from the lessons I took I feel more confident drawing and I have a better notion of forms, space and proportions than I had before
I am interested in animation and m 20.. but I don’t have any drawing exp so I suck at art … I’ll start this course today it self and I’ll give 6hours of my time daily cause m jobless 😅….I hope I get into Sep 2023 intake in some of the nice colleges in Canada 😢..I hope this info is the one that changes my life .. thanks bud and don’t stop making content 🎉
I wish you the best of luck on your journey and remember - keep going no matter what, even if you think that drawing 250 boxes is pointless! Glad u like the video.
Thank you! I am a way better rapper/songwriter then draftsman, so I am pursuing that career, but I will still keep drawing because this is really fun. I may drop a video here and there as well.
Hey, I realised that I have to focus on my music more. (Im also a musician) But I will upload here on this channel from time to time, some sketchbook tour videos are on the way so if u want hit that notification bell:)
I tried it it was so so boring I could even stick with it if something is so boring that I can't finish it I'm never going to stick with it I Quit after like 2 weeks I'm not going to like grind until who knows when you're actually drawing something fun.
@@meandidraws there's lots of ways to learn if a program you're doing is really boring and you can't stick to it you're not going to stick to it and actually draw every day and get better it's the same thing with losing weight if you can't stick to your diet you'll never lose weight. On the Dropbox Reddit it says like only about 1% of the students actually finished draw a box you just got to find what works for you if you can't stick to it

Also trent lessons on gumroad are pretty good for beginners. th-cam.com/users/TrentKaniuga
@@williammclean6594 Cool, if it works for you, do it:) I personally tried Trent's easy art lessons and I definitely prefer Drawabox. It goes waay deeper into fundamentals.
I usually just drew my normal illustrations, not completely complying with 50% rule, but yeah. You can check out my art on my instagram: @meandidraws , what about you?
I've been drawing for many years as a hobbyist, lack of fundamental knowledge was always holding me back. Learning how to draw a line can teach you so much even when you got years into your craft.
For 5$? I've seen the patreon, to get the official feedback it's 27$, I can't pay 27$... I'm from Brazil and that becomes expensive for me... I don't know if drawabox would help me without the feedbacks

I get it could kill someone's motivation though, especially if they end up feeling like "I should buy a more expensive tablet"
The one point that makes sense to me is that you can't submit it for feedback.
@@meandidraws Hmm not sure, to me it doesn't feel "hard to do", just don't use undo for the practice. idk
But yeah, I suppose that's a good point since some students might've built such a habit already.
cool editing and delivery, loved it, come back to doing videos, you're doing a great job
Thank you! glad you like it, music is my main thing, this is more of a side thing. I will make youtube videos on this channel here and there, but it probably won't be consistent, so if you don't wanna miss it, hit that notification bell:)
Please do a separate video of each lesson
I have thought of that previously, but I probably won't be able to do a video for each lesson, because it's been a long time since I finished the course and shooting, editing, scripting so many videos would be insanely time consuming. BUT, I am planning to do a follow up video about drawabox, where I will try to discuss each lesson briefly.
Your intro was the best I had to write about that funny but cool Intro, one of a kind hehe. :)
hahaha thanks!
Thanks nan Hope ur Channel jeeps grinding
thnx!
Great vibe, informative and inspiring video! Bat wait! Kebab in Lithuania cost 5$?! It reminds the famous expression of Vincent Vega about cocktail )
Thank u! And its 6.50 eu now due to inflation 😭
thnakyou so much i was hesitating to take this course becoz i want to learn digital art but after watching your video i will definitely take this draw abbox course and i'll do it with traditonal tools thanks thankyou so much seriously after watchig your video its easy to understand also

glad it helped!
Thanks, I always want to do it in the fastest way, since I am 14 years old and I am in school, but sometimes I forget that, I am 14 years old, and at that age I already know all this, I know that I am doing well, very well.
I thought the same 5 years ago
You can do it!
Great review, well done!
Thank you!
I’m going to check it out!
(Man, that kebab looked so good.)
Thanks! Yeah the kebab looks good, since I finished lesson 7 I’m gonna order another kebab
Ummm.. I didnt fully understand what you wanted to say with this lol 😀😀
@@meandidraws honestly I just realised I don't either I honestly have no clue. I normally just ramble in random things like I'm in the void

@@meandidraws Thank you! I greatly appreciate it! And just like in your video, you make good points.
My first attempt at Draw a Box had my shoulders soooo sore the next day 🤣
Oh yeah gotta take it easy at first, I can remember the neck pain when doing drawing for hours. Then started drawing on a tilted surface, way better.

@@Duck.Sensei its all by design 😀
I am starting the course and DAMN i read a lot. I even took notes xD
Good job, how did it go?
@meandidraws I couldn't finish the course cuz I had to study other things BUT from the lessons I took I feel more confident drawing and I have a better notion of forms, space and proportions than I had before
@@lilialalia4836 Awesome! Yeah even if you don't finish it 100% you will still get something from it.

Awesome video.
Thanks!

Why did you stop uploading this is my first video I’ve watched of your and thought you had 50k+ subs based on the quality
Hey, I realised that I have to focus on my music more. (Im also a musician) But I will upload here on this channel from time to time, some sketchbook tour videos are on the way so if u want hit that notification bell:)
Can I use normal pen ??? since I can't buy fine liners
Sure!
As a Lithuanian the Lithuanian kebab comment caught me so off guard 😂

How long after you submitted the homework did they get back to you?
a few days usually, not long:)
I’m shocked you can get that kebab for $5, I want that thing.
Its 6 eu now, because of inflation 🥲
I tried it it was so so boring I could even stick with it if something is so boring that I can't finish it I'm never going to stick with it I Quit after like 2 weeks I'm not going to like grind until who knows when you're actually drawing something fun.
Damn. 😀 go watch some art tips on tiktok then, what do I know 😀
@@meandidraws there's lots of ways to learn if a program you're doing is really boring and you can't stick to it you're not going to stick to it and actually draw every day and get better it's the same thing with losing weight if you can't stick to your diet you'll never lose weight. On the Dropbox Reddit it says like only about 1% of the students actually finished draw a box you just got to find what works for you if you can't stick to it
@@williammclean6594 I mean if it's not for you then it's not for you, if you find something that will work for you better - that's for the best. :) Did you find anything that would work better?
@@meandidraws yeah there's a lot of art courses out there that are way better than draw a box like the like the Proko one or a lot of stuff on Gum Road you just have to pay for it but you get what you paid for most people drop out of draw a box around lesson 6 or something I'd rather just pay for something because you can tell if it's going to be good or not just by the reviews.

You never actually went on to explain your experience with DrawABox. What was it?
But I kind of did. It was great if you didn't get it in the video :D
i saw a kebab on the site thumbnail, what did you order back then?

Do employers look at this type of training when hiring?
Don't think so, employers look at your finished work in your portfolio.
8:20 So true lol!
Literally artist drawing from many many years, talking about beginner guide which learns how to draw a line XD wtf

Aqui pra mim aparece R$27,50 pra 1 crédito de correção. Um pouco mais caro que o plano mensal da Netflix
