    I came to Troy super late, watching old videos of Hot Hawaiian Nights on TH-cam. But when I saw him play that crazy run from "Surf", I knew he had the stuff I wanted to play. Other players are more technical and impressive from a 'classical' point of view, but Troy makes the uke ROCK. Love it!

    Mahalo for sharing Braddah! 🤙🏽 Thank you for helping unlock the Ukulele for me... especially all of these songs. In my opinion, this is how Ukulele should be played. Mahalo nui🤙🏽

    I read that Troy Fernandez helped revive interest in the ukulele among Hawaiian youths in the 1990's with his rock and reggae covers, under the boardwalk, lay down sally, guava jelly etc etc...

    I discovered the Ka'au Crater Boys 2 days ago and I'm addicted to their music. I can't believe I hear about them only now... They are incredible.

    Same story here. I didn’t realize how truly iconic he was until I couldn’t really find other popular local tracks doing similar things. I’m glad I found him to follow early on because it’s shaped my playing like no one else could have.

    My favourite accomplishment is learning how to play SURF by Ka'au Crater Boys, that was only possible from watching your earlier tutorial tuning down half a step.....As an Aussie kid in the 70's I grew up listening to mum's Hawaiian records with Hawaiian steel, uke n slack key sounds trying to sing along to that Hukilau Song.

    Man, how do you play the d chord without muting the a string? I usually play the fifth up where I just bar the second fret and then hit the 4th or 5th fret on a string i cant remember offhand

    With regards to the 4th lick I actually think it is more than visual as you are then able to use the G and C strings as pedal tones, where you wouldn’t really have been able to do that with the more conventional 6ths.

    • @HawaiiMusicSchool
      @HawaiiMusicSchool  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not using the C string. Conventional 6ths use the same notes. I see what you’re saying about pedaling off both notes, and you’re correct. Totally possible, but not what Troy was playing.

    Are you playing reentrant g? Can it be done with a low G?

    • @HawaiiMusicSchool
      @HawaiiMusicSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sara Jane Montgomery I used a High G for this video because that is what Troy Fernandez uses. You can play the same licks with a Low G, but the octave makes it sound different. I once had a friend tell me that he uses peanut butter instead of cheese on sandwiches because he's lactose intolerant. I tried it... Not bad, but not the same either. As is playing High G licks on Low G and vice-versa. Lol!

    the funniest thing I got a new ukelele and it came with the necklace strap and no instructions, I put it around the guitar, around the neck, eventually I came to the idea to put it inside the uke but then I thought I was wrong and never used it again, then I start this video and hes got one, AND HES GOT IT INSIDE THE UKE lol I WAS RIGHT, where the heck is it now I put it somewhere
