Good video. Most of us don't have a clue as to the problems and frustrations that arise with equipment even when the tools are new or well maintained. Add in time pressure as Mother Nature waits for no one. Hope for a better day tomorrow. Side note: In all my years of farming I don't think I ever considered the possibility of a fire or a smoldering fire in the equipment. Of course we baled hay so that is probably not as great a risk. However making sure the hay was dry enough before baling was critical. I did come on one barn fire on a farm once. You could see it from 6 or 7 miles away. The unfortunate farmer had his haying done and the barn full. Luckily his cattle were all out of the barn. It was a frightening scene. The roar and the heat were astounding. There wasn't anything that could be done except try to prevent the fire from spreading to other areas. Better conditions tomorrow, I hope.
Andy, don't feel alone, we had 2 days of hell, blown hose on packing tractor, head problem on chopper, then the 5000 I drive quite, plugged fuelline, Sunday, then again Monday , ended up draining tank, still don't know what was in it , then fanhub quite working!🤯, Then Tuesday afternoon I couldn't take the heat and humidity, had to call it a day , plus finding metal like you did, thank god first cutting is done!🤠

I’ve never really run into that chopping, but just bailing hay we’ve had trouble with the knot tying systems where you have to get out of the tractor every 20 feet and that used to piss me off more than just about anything in my life lol so I feel your pain
I've never seen so much metal in one field! It's no fun stopping, getting out, and looking for a little piece of metal in the rows. Good thing you had help.

Wow that what I been thinking from the 1st time you had metal problems. Another thing that might work is to hang a large magnet on the merger. Or in front of the chopper. Flustering any way you look at it.
On my cone crusher it has a metal detector on the feed belt before it dumps the rock into the cone and I’ve been on jobs like that where your in and out of the excavator every 5 mins picking out nuts bolts teeth shanks you name it so I feel your pain...good video
Sorry you had a miserable day. My definition of a good day is when no one got hurt and I'm not going to my child's funeral. I've had one of those bad days and it lasted over a year straight. I truly hope life never shows you what a real bad day is. I love your videos.
Someone needs to invent a tilling machine that has a gigantic magnet on it with a conveyor belt into a hopper. I loved chopping as a kid 40 years ago. Course it was old tech then - an old White 2-150 with a trailed Gehl chopper
I really feel for you and your staff with such a frustrating day - I did wonder when watching the video why the crop was so dry. Self explanatory after your explanation! You will no doubt have further issues at the clamp as well as I'm sure it will be mighty difficult to roll it down firm enough unless you have enough rather more moist stuff to layer on top.
I helped whit my uncle chopping for farmers to a few time's and the metal detection is frustrating. We had a field where we found over 10 nails where they nail the wire to a wood post, tinny little things hard to find. My uncle said that this farmer must just trow them in his field for fun thats how frustated he got because he is working against the clock to. When there is field whit new seeding my uncle mostly ask to use loading wagons whit a pick-up becaus the chopper get pluged so each just right behind the blower where the grass goes into the spout water hardly cleans it out. I love this job so mutch always happy when he call my up for that beautyfull machine's those choppers he has 2 ons john deere 8400i and one claas 960 jaguar plus he has like I think 6 self loading wagons for on the tractor 2 schuitenmaker 6600, 2 tandem axel and I think 3 ore 4, 8400 schuitenmaker 3 axel whit over 50 cubic feet holding capasity. The beauty of the wagons is the can all go into corn silage to they are dubble purpose wagons nice to run to they can cut the grass to the same size like the chopper can so.

that takes me back to chopping silage with a trailed one. They had no magnets and our first precision chop hit a bit of metal, took it into the 7200 spinning drum and it launched part of a knife out thorugh the casing and miles down the field. You don't want that happening. But at least now you have you the crop down and cut it once you should be better next time. no till has its benefits
Hi Andy. I know how you feel about having water handy. I had a fire start in my round baler last summer. My sons water bottle and a ditch full of water nearby saved the day.
I remember on our pull type chopper we mounted a 30 gallon tank on top with a small pump that sprayed water into the cutter head, it made a huge difference in those sticky situations. We also had to hook a garden hose to the blower to keep the pipe clean when filling silos.

I feel that pain but with a different machine. We had an old power Harrow that ran with shear bolts, working the stoniest field on the farm. God I was on and off so many bloody times!!
We hunt deere around here. Chopping straw years ago with a pull type 3960 and it caught on fire what a deal it was getting it out. Took the wagon to the silo and it was smoldering too. Something I will never forget that's for sure.
Last year, a farm neighboring Andy had a plastic piece fall off the from rollers on top of the metal detector. Because they were on corn, they had the processer in it. Plastic destroyed both knives and processer.
Had a similar experience yesterday our mower driver became a little over enthusiastic and tried mowing the bottom of the ditches and dragged a lot of rubbish into the headland.
hallo Andrew. when you get new fields with grass. and the metal detector finds metal . you must spit out the grass at the chopper and let it lie !! you can put away the gras with an old selfload wagon or tractor with front loader into the forest . the machinery contractors which came here in germany to the farms to chop the silage . let to lie the gras with metalwire or other metal . the worked per hour . time is cash - time is money ! nice greatings from North West Germany from east frisia from Bert !

I remember you guys recovering the drone from that tree. I would've paid big money to see you guys cracking up at everything you went through to get that drone back.
Beeps are loud in video. When you back up if the chopper has a horn beep thre shorts. "When standing back" Two shorts for moving foward, and one long blast all stop. trains use these and they are quite universal. Run a magnet bar in front of a tractor plow then put the metal in the bucket. Use thick leather gloves.
Had the same thing happen a few years ago, they went along the QC/NY border with a tree grinder and chopped everything. It’s left old fence lines thrown a couple hundred feet into our fields and the fence was all chewed up to 3-8” it was a nightmare 🤦♂️
We have a field aside a row of 10 houses or so, and one of them burned pallets all the time and would throw the ashes and all the rest into the field. When we try to chop hay along that one 100ft pass, I'd have to get out and find a pallet staple or a screw or nail. It was bad, maybe about 20 times in that 100ft span. I finally gave up trying to find whatever was in there and threw armloads of hay into their yard. I'm sure they didn't appreciate a tractor revving all the way up and all the way back down every minute, especially at midnight 30, but what ya gonna do.
I know a man who had problems like you and had nothing but bother with shotgun cartridges round the end rows of a field so he turned the metal detector off untill it found an old horse shoe. It was like a bomb going off under the seat.
Good Evening from Tucker Ga. I have an idea I wonder if you could us a roller on the field after you seed it? That would mash all the crap into the soil like the farmers do in upper midwest for rocks

The knife sharpener is nice. Much nicer then the old hand crank that was on our pull type Gehl chopper.

Seems far better to lift it as you go then it’s done and saves having to send someone back to lift little bits of grass to dump in the woods

Our CLAAS has a water tank on board. A few gallons a load keeps things clean. Sometimes even dirt can cause metal detector to go off
