@@pickledcottoncandy ATPB is the best to me. I remember when I first heard Ruin... it sounded like no other metal band. That raw sound left with Ashes which is a lot more purified. To most people it 'sounds better' because it's more defined and thick. ATPB has a very unique brutalness to it. Just like At the Gates with Slaughter of the Soul... there's nothing else like it.
This is why they're one of my favourite bands. I don't think they've ever released a bad album. There aren't even many bad songs in their entire back catalogue.
Mark is riff master for sure and especially when playing w/ Willie, Lamb of God have crafted of the best riffs. One of my favorite duos, can't wait to hear Mark's solo album!
I only listen to Lamb Of God occasionally but this dude is one of the best riff writers I know, there are at least a dozen songs that have blown my head clean off with the creative riffing
Descending has always been a favorite of mine. I went through a very dark chapter in my life where I attempted to end myself through alcohol and it was basically my self-proclaimed theme song. It is very deep and dark and off-kilter for them as a band.
How is possible that song starts sooo fucking strong,... and constantly builds the whole way? It literally builds from beginning and doesn't stop til it explodes.
Great interview. I really appreciate the historical references to Mark's influences. I never knew he would be such a great interview and so down to earth. I love the same bands he does but would never consider him saying so. Really enjoyed this interview. Thank You! Seen him many times in the past, and god willing more in the future!
Really take a step back and think about the amount of musical and artistic talent present in Lamb of God, yes even with Art who's a beast on the sticks.
Not sure what classifications define a riff for Mark and what makes one better than the other (he's ingenious, imo, like a new age Toni Iommi), but I absolutely love his guitar playing in Subtle Arts and they killed it on Killadelphia. That breakdown at the end is their heaviest riff, imo.
The Muse song he's referencing in regard to Walk With Me In Hell is probably Hysteria or Stockholm Syndrome. The main riffs definitely have a lot of up and down the neck.
Wow, dude I though so at first, but then comparing it with Slither I couldn't match it... Went down a couple of songs and ended with the verdict; 'Thoughts Of A Dying Ateist'. Just try to blend the riffs with an audio editor, comes out near perfect I think...
Mark and Willie were there right when I needed them the most. When Dimebag died, Lamb Of God was there. Couldn't have been a better time for them to take over!!
Great video. One of my favorites has always been the end of “A Warning”. I’ve always thought the staccato rhythm that builds up step by step and then reverses itself was particularly clever. Plus the cowbell. Oh that cowbell... finally get to see you at Rockville this year!
Mark Morton is just a mad scientist with the guitar. That’s was got me into Lamb of God. I was almost* as blown away by them as I was when I first heard Pantera.
i honestly LOVED listening to Descending, its actually the first riff that got me INTO Lamb Of God in the first place! It was in my top 3 songs for the band as a whole..... Walk With Me In Hell, Descending, Blacken The Cursed Sun..... playing those 3 songs on guitar was part of my daily warmup routine. Those three songs covered everything I needed to use for warmups, so once I could play all three back to back that I was properly warmed up. You have to have perfect sync between the fretting and picking to get it just right.....
I've seen LOG 10 times live, own most of their records, but still can't just pull up riffs off the top of my head. This is like telling me about painting by doing interpretive dance.
I'm a huge fan of Lamb Of God, but I totally admire Mark Morton, he always comes out with the most brillant riffs & solos of metal nowdays. Mark do what you love Man, and tell the rest of the band, that you are the greatest fucking metal band today!!! "L.O.G." Thank you for all your music, I enjoy it throughly!!! 😎👍
I had read a bunch about Lamb Of God around the time Palaces came out. Then I saw the video for Ruin on Headbangers. I knew instantly what all the hype was about.
Oh and cross of with Chester is such an amazing song.. Chester definitely showed his talent in this song and I just with they could have done a full album together or even started a side project band.
5 of the best looking dishes I've ever made that I'm most proud of, followed by a cook describing what they look like and how they cooked it. Make it happen Revolver.
my favorite 5 riffs are 1. opening to 11th hour. 2. blood of the scribe 3. break you. 4. for your malice 5. now you've got somethign to die for... he has inspired every song i've written, from what i've learned from playing his music and chris adler's work from those two albums. like descending, mozart would use a melody in different ways, and its fun to use a bridge or riff that develops the song in different ways, though you are playing the same thing over again.
As the palaces burn album is my favorite. Ashes of the wake and sacrament are great too, but As the Palaces Burn is very unique in it's riffs and lyrics content. I love As the palaces burn, ruin, Vigil, and Boot Scraper so much. The express a sort of under class rage that is so relatable right now. I mean that rage has always been relatable in any class society, but I think a lot of working class people could listen to Boot Scraper for instance and be like, hey maybe it is time to turn and bite that hand that's bleeding us dry. Vigil is a supreme expression of this in my view. That section "Sickness to you my master!" gives me chills to this day. So powerful and radical.
Walk with me in hell is probably my all time favorite lamb of god song.. ashes of the wake is probably my favorite album but that song is so fuckin hard
All 4 (sorry idk the independent song) of my favorite songs, I have some others but I always knew mark spearheaded these songs and I'm proud to know I was right
Love Lamb of God. Love these songs, and the riffs in them. This video, however is a massive fail as it doesn't actually play/show the riffs! Such a bummer! When Mark was talking about the Velvet Revolver song (Slither) and how it inspired the riff for Walk With Me in Hell - which riff exactly? How will we ever know now?

So glad Mark is in this band. Pretty much all of my favorites from LoG are "Mark's songs". It also makes me glad that Chris isn't the main song writer cause every time I hear him talk about song writing I cringe a bit. Basically "if it's not super fast or Megadeath-y it's not metal"

Not since Randy Rhoads have I had to hear every riff from a guitarist, to hear/see what he comes up with next. Morton and Adler write shit that makes you want to play..

pretty good

This would been cool if u played the riffs... Each one of these songs has like a dozen riffs in it
He was definitely talking about Hysteria when he mentioned Muse. Same end of the riff
I could listen to you talk about riffs anytime , such a amazing artist
I knew mark would never mention Grace but its my favourite song it has great intro, riffs and an amazing solo ..a beautiful masterpiece..
Because Chris’s drumming on that song was phenomenal. Sounds like a typical LoG song but listening closely the drums on Grace was just so good
“Well it’s Slither, so it makes sense that you would like it.” 😂😂
Descending and Laid to Rest, in my opinion, are the Lamb of God's masterpieces... Those two songs are just PERFECT!
Ashes of the wake is a creative masterpiece, every song riff is absoultely mind blowing.
Descending is one of my all time favorite LOG tracks. So take pride in it sir. What a legendary riff.
Imagine being so good at guitar that a riff you were just using to warm up with turns into one of your band’s top 5 songs.
Vigil is one of my favorite tunes, ever.
11th Hour. Nothing else to say
The outro man! One of my fave outros in metal! The switching of guitars on 2 channel and drums. Simple but tasty and dirty as f!
Varo Andrés Will wrote 11th hour.
Fuck yeah ...
I still wonder how the fk they came up with that second part of that song.
How is possible that song starts sooo fucking strong,... and constantly builds the whole way? It literally builds from beginning and doesn't stop til it explodes.
