I have deep respect for these two. They go way out of their comfort zones when creating riffs, and it just shows no riff is impossible with hard work.... and beer. Lol.
Also everything they do on guitar is the essentials you need to master for precise and STRONG rythem guitar in metal and to this day I am nowhere near how they play...I mean as the palaces burn...some riffs on that are just stunning.
I think this is because he has to constantly watch Willie and play along with him. Lead guitarist is a misnomer. They actually have to follow the rhythm player and that is what Mark is doing. He is constantly looking at Willie's guitar to make sure he is in time with what is coming next. IMO the lead is a much harder job.
I always thought the peek at the neck was always a sign of amazing chemistry. But, I think Willie doesn't get enough credit when it comes to the amazing sound of LoG's iconic guitar riffs.
@Narf Like, there's probably a zillion guitarists out there who could mop up the floor with you. You play at this level? The world is waiting to hear. NARF= BARF
I can't believe how tight they are. I've seen them live too, and even at concert they're so tight it sounds studio perfect to me. Incredibly impressive.
+Youssef Assem Well..they're awesome, no doubt, and those Mark Vs sound killer. As for "best", let's make a bigger list and throw in Jeff Loomis and Keith Morrow (Conquering Dystopia), and then there's a couple of guys in Wintersun who aren't bad either :). When you get to the level of these guys who are so good technically, it just boils down to how much you like their music.
I totally agree with you. I firmly believe that Mark and Willie's sound is the best in metal, but it's because I love lamb of God (I also like the sound of the Dominion with the Mark 5). Music is all about perception and people like different sounds\songs etc for different reasons. When you get to your "instrumental peak" it's all about preference. :)
To much of hum I have boogies and evan with an OD in front it has no noticeable hum. But Im an OCD electrical engineer and I go threw everything from Caps to cables lights tvs.
HiLRoy Shreding - Keep in mind that this was a pair of Mark IV's on a bus (generator power) and both amps we're plugged into the same cabinet (likely ground loop). This video is not a demo as much as it is just a cool video with Mark & Willie riffing out on one of their songs for all of us to enjoy!
Definitely 2 of my favorite metal guitarists that are still alive they understand each other so perfect many many hrs of practice and playing together they created a bond there actually my guitarist 2 Mark and 3 Willie my 1st top is Dimebag definitely he helped pioneer metal or today but Lamb of God is my top metal band forsure
Man its so great to see the smile on marks face as they play. You can really tell he loves playing that thing and the passion for music and composition of it. Just the sheer soul and pride this man has
Joe Downing Not only am I seeing them perform this Saturday, they're also going to be at a record store near where I live meeting the public, taking questions and signing their new album cover.
Joe Downing me too my man. I'm looking forward to it. They did a meet and greet here a few years back at the same record store, but I was out of town and missed it, so i'm glad I have another opportunity.
I have said that Metallica is my favorite group since 1987. I love Death Magnetic and Hardwired, but Lamb of God overtook Metallica as my favorite two months ago. I hope Randy preserves his vocal chords.
4:15 Best Hourglass riff. Best song on Ashes of the Wake too. IMO. Been listening since 2004. First time seeing Lamb of God was at Sounds of the Underground in Saskatoon in 2005. What an amazing concert. They were the headliners and Devil Driver was the opening act. I was listing to a lot of Fury of the Makers Hand at the time. My two favourite bands at the time started and finished that concert. Still one of the funnest days of my life. 11 am till 1am tue next day. Gwar covered me in red and green dye too haha.

Mark Morton's tone is absolutely unbelievable. Anybody know of an amp or setup than can get real close that tone? I am not getting a Mesa Boogie amp, they are insanely high, and plus I am not a recording artist, just playing for the fun of it. I recently got a Vox AV15G and it sounds amazing, but need some more brightness and gain to sound like Mark's tone.
In his RA-100 video, he showed his settings and he had his Mids and Treble at about 2 o’clock and his bass was backed off around 10 o’clock or so. You could try that with a boost or a touch if OD in front?
I hate that moment before you realize that you only have one headphone in and the the video needs two headphones. I was like "why do I only hear Mark?". Great video, guys.
i just got a guitar for christmas and after learning the 1st 1 1/2 minutes of iron maiden's fear of the dark, i feel pretty good about my playing. then i see these two and i just want to lie down in a fetal position and go catatonic
+wishuhadmyname I felt the same when I started. If you wanna learn something just go for it. Most of the time it's easier than you think if you start slowly and get up the speed. Patience! It doesn't happen overnight. Practice practice practice. These guys have been playing for many years and they probably struggled in the beginning as we all do! Don't go fetal, go rockin! Seeing as your post is 2 years old, how's your playing now? Hope you didn't quit.

These guys have the best riffs in modern metal.
In my opinion they have the best unique complex riffs in the history of metal

sometimes mark is overwhelmed at how fucking awesome they sound together.
Mark is just always amazed by Willies style whenever I see thek play, such a good duo

Well for me in metal, there's no lead or rhythm, each one of them had a part and a job to fill, and that's a good thing.

its scary how tight they play together
playing this fuckin tight with no drums, no bass, no click takes years of playing together. this is the key to Lamb of God's technicality

@Mario If that's your point then anyone can do anything anyone ever did and nothing is ever astounding.
Mario
Oh ya anyone can just become a professional guitarist. Guaranteed since you said that you suck ass at playing.
I like how when Mark is playing he spends most of the time watching Willy's hands not his
I like how when Mark is playing he's watching Willy's hands almost more than his own
