Lee Choon-Jae actually did see "Memories of Murder" in theaters. He said he had no particular reactions or feelings about it. One of the reasons Director Bong Joon-ho specifically chose this ending because he was confident the killer would watch it. He was right, but apparently Lee had such little or no conscience that he couldnt connect a based-on-his-reality drama emotionally to his actual reality and the shame it should/would cause in most human beings. Just another chilling example of how psychologically messed up Lee really is.

Yeah, while I cannot find any information about how prisoners can watch films in South Korea, it would make sense that prisoners would be forced to watch "Memories of Murder". As Director Bong Joon-ho made this movie hoping the killer would watch it, it would make sense for jails to make inmates watch it in the hopes it would drive the killer to confess to what they've done if they were already imprisoned. Given the murders did stop and what we already know about serial killers in general, the police probably figured the killer was in jail or dead.
Its sickening really. Especially towards the family, who don't even get the courtesy of knowing what happened, or giving her a final resting place and just trying to find some peace.
We had it in the uk until we joined the EU an they changed our laws an legislation. They also changed it to be your guilty as charged, prove your innocent. But most people don't even know it. A person can also be tried over and over if they are found not guilty...the law is not just or fair. You could be accused of murder some day, an with no statute of limits how would you like it to be 40 years later.

So if you commit a murder and then avoid prosecution for 40 years, I’d say they would feel pretty lucky to have 40 years of freedom they wouldn’t have had otherwise. As for the innocently accused, I’m sure it would feel just as terrible to be accused of a 40 year old crime as it would a 4 day old crime. The timing is pretty immaterial.

But as to the statute of limitations, no, if you murder someone you shouldn't be able to get away with it, ever, especially after just 17 years. Instead of asking about how they would feel about being charged after 40 years, ask yourself if you had a family member murdered, how would you feel if that person was caught after 20 years but gets to walk because it took too long to catch them.
Imagine being the mother of the 8 year old and finding out that not only did they find your child, but hid her body to avoid doing their jobs. Oh and statue of limitations says the man who did it will walk. Unbelievable.
What's chilling is that, roughly seventeen years ago, the police consulted Yoo Young-chul for this case, who is basically the Ted Bundy of South Korea (killed 20 people in little less than an year), during Lee Choon-jae's killing hiatus after he stuck in jail for murduring his sister in law. Young-chul, after observing the case, stated: "The killer is either dead already or in jail. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to stop himself. He's addicted to murder." He was on point.

You're my anti drug. When I used to use I'd make sure I was sober on posting days. Hard to follow the videos high on meth so I gradually started using less and less until I stopped(takes a day or two to sober up completely) love ya mike. I think there was a petition to put the hard punishment on the responsive detectives and a prosecutor. It was a big news in S. Korea few years back. You know the angry mob and all.

Sex crime justice is repulsive in S.Korea. Just last year, two singers were charged for drugging and gang raping multiple women on multiple occasions, taping the assaults and sharing it in group chats. They have the messages and videos as evidence. They got five or six years only to have their sentences REDUCED. They have filed multiple appeals. Their justice system is a joke.

That's a very good connection ir would be interesting to see if 1 the victims had physical similarities And 2 and can those traits be linked to the sister. If so then it's fair to assume that he was responsible for the sisters murder strangulation and drowning can often resemble each other in the flailing throws in which a victim reacts to. I can also guarantee that within the period of time from thw sisters death to the victims now their will be many other women that suffered by his hands
I am a subscriber who lives in South Korea. Unlike at the time of the incident, the criminal was imprisoned for other crimes, recent advances in science and technology led to a profiler's presence and a confession after a long interview.
I too live in Korea, actually for 14 yrs now. As much as Korea has developed economically, its laws are still 3rd world country at best. It benefits the criminal more than the victim, albeit a violent or self defense. Korea must update its laws to protect the innocent.

This happens far too often. This has to be said: police agencies are NOT interested in the truth; police agencies/detectives are interested in CLOSING CASES and they will pin a case on an innocent person if they have to.
Poland, guy served 25 yrs for nothing, cops needed the perpetrator fast so they found one, extracted the confesion with violence. It's very known case here as the guy recently came out, big movie and shit. Those types of cases are universal - police is under pressure to solve the case so they help themselves 'a little bit"

The film inspired by this case, Memories of Murder is one of the first films that hipped me to the excellence of Korean thrillers. The director Bong Joon-ho won an Oscar last year for the biting social class satire Parasite. He also directed Snowpiercer. His entire film catalogue is genius.
Coming from a country that does not have a statute of limitations for murder, it's always so weird to me to hear about stories where a killer was found decades later but couldn't be brought to trial because of the law.

The last scene of the movie was brilliant tho, we’re told that Park Doo-Man (The Detective) who claims to see through someone’s soul through gazing at them looks at the camera as the Director knows that that serial killer will be watching the film letting him reminded of his sins. And now the dude’s been finally identified.
Memories of Murder, the movie about this killer, is definitely one of the best movies I've ever seen. The camera work and composite plays are also out of this world.

Yeah I really don't see why we need it. Maybe the SOL has some benefit in that you don't always have to live with a black mark against your name if you did something dubious a few years back, like a spot of drug dealing or minor thefts. But when we get to murder, rape, molestation... I don't care if it's a hundred years after the fact, if you are found out, you should be prosecuted.
For certain crimes it makes sense. People can be in a bad place and do back things (theft, drugs etc) however there isn't a circumstance that makes you a rapist or murderer

I'm an American and was stationed at Su Won Air Base in Gyonggi Province, Korea then later taught there for several years; I was teaching at the National Police University when these murders occurred and we tried to solve them (to no avail, obviously).

Not centuries-old laws. They established new laws after the country reformed post-WWII (For about 50 years they were under Japanese colonial rule). But they were under a kind of weak/violent dictatorship until 1987ish so, like the Weimar Republic, the weak laws that still exist are probably a product of the shaky government at the time.

I have so much respect for the director for making the movie when the police are basically useless and misconducting all of the investigations and numerous people were blindly investigated and charged, still women just kept disappearing. He was like “That’s enough, let me just tell the whole country the truth” and the movie shows how incompetent the polices are and with the movie being a huge hit, the police finally got their act together. Huge respect.

He probably won't, unless I missed something, I don't think it's very probably he will get parole, since he did get sentenced to life.
According to news articles, the parole board is never letting him out. They also abolished the statute of limitations for murder in 2015.

What's chilling is that, roughly seventeen years ago, the police consulted Yoo Young-chul for this case, who is basically the Ted Bundy of South Korea (killed 20 people in little less than an year), during Lee Choon-jae's killing hiatus after he stuck in jail for murduring his sister in law. Young-chul, after observing the case, stated: "The killer is either dead already or in jail. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to stop himself. He's addicted to murder." He was on point.

Torturing an innocent man, coercing a confession and sending that man to prison to waste 20 years he can never recover, 1.6 mil be damned, is evil on par with that of a serial killer.
I think there was a petition to put the hard punishment on the responsive detectives and a prosecutor. It was a big news in S. Korea few years back. You know the angry mob and all.
Worse still, he was lucky that it ended up only being 20 years. Those monsters fully expected that they would be putting him in there for life. Might as well be a long, drawn out murder.

Same area, same patterns, same time, same bus...I know that the technology is not good back then, but I still couldn't get it... Hire a lady police officer who gets off the bus in different outfits in that bus for some days with a weapon with her...

Just last year, two singers were charged for drugging and gang raping multiple women on multiple occasions, taping the assaults and sharing it in group chats. They have the messages and videos as evidence. They got five or six years only to have their sentences REDUCED. They have filed multiple appeals. Their justice system is a joke.

I am a subscriber who lives in South Korea. Unlike at the time of the incident, the criminal was imprisoned for other crimes, recent advances in science and technology led to a profiler's presence and a confession after a long interview.
I too live in Korea, actually for 14 yrs now. As much as Korea has developed economically, its laws are still 3rd world country at best. It benefits the criminal more than the victim, albeit a violent or self defense. Korea must update its laws to protect the innocent.

Poland, guy served 25 yrs for nothing, cops needed the perpetrator fast so they found one, extracted the confesion with violence. It's very known case here as the guy recently came out, big movie and shit. Those types of cases are universal - police is under pressure to solve the case so they help themselves 'a little bit"

The film inspired by this case, Memories of Murder is one of the first films that hipped me to the excellence of Korean thrillers. The director Bong Joon-ho won an Oscar last year for the biting social class satire Parasite. He also directed Snowpiercer. His entire film catalogue is genius.
Parasite was amazing - I’ll def have to check out those too!
And..."The Train to Busan". He's brilliant.

Yeah I really don't see why we need it. Maybe the SOL has some benefit in that you don't always have to live with a black mark against your name if you did something dubious a few years back, like a spot of drug dealing or minor thefts.

I'm an American and was stationed at Su Won Air Base in Gyonggi Province, Korea then later taught there for several years; I was teaching at the National Police University when these murders occurred and we tried to solve them (to no avail, obviously).

Realistically, there should be no statute of limitations on ANY crime.
Not centuries-old laws. They established new laws after the country reformed post-WWII (For about 50 years they were under Japanese colonial rule). But they were under a kind of weak/violent dictatorship until 1987ish so, like the Weimar Republic, the weak laws that still exist are probably a product of the shaky government at the time.

I have so much respect for the director for making the movie when the police are basically useless and misconducting all of the investigations and numerous people were blindly investigated and charged, still women just kept disappearing. He was like “That’s enough, let me just tell the whole country the truth” and the movie shows how incompetent the polices are and with the movie being a huge hit, the police finally got their act together. Huge respect.

when does negligence cross the line into maliciousness? we unfortunately have too many Jeffery Dahmer's that were allowed to continue killing from simple police negligence when they're needed the most.
It doesn't because there is a massive difference between 80s forensics and 2021 forensics.....They didn't "find" Jeffy Dahmer, the more so stumbled across him because someone got away.....
Dahmer was even a suspect for a string of murders in Germany when he was stationed there in the US Air Force in the 70s. So he may of been doing that stuff from the 70s to the 90s
We need to start dropping the hammer on murderers, rapists and pedo’s. Mandatory capitol punishment. No waiting , 3 months maximum for appeals . Make it public and bring back the blood eagle. If we show zero tolerance and are barbaric. These crimes will slow and maybe eventually stop . As the consequences would be not worth it .

Wait til you hear about the law they have when someone commits a crime while intoxicated. They are given a lesser punishment because they were under the influence so it actually wasn’t them it was the alcohol that caused them to do it. Extremely ridiculous.

There should be no statute of limitations on murder or sexual crimes. Or giving criminals a lighter sentence because they were drunk during the act of committing a crime. All of this BS is extremely disgusting.
