- Submariner or Sea Dweller? Let's be honest most would go for the Submariner, which is a GOOD watch. But the truth is the Sea Dweller is SO much more capable than the Submariner, the BETTER option (for me) join me as I explore this subject in moderate amounts of detail!

What do you think - Sub or Sea Dweller? Or maybe something entirely different 🤔
I took the diver extension off instead of links since I find it useless and better looking without it.
@@frankv7068 Smart - I thought about doing the same, but then got lazy 😅
GS SLGA023 Ushio 😜
Out of left field 😅 love it!
Rolex Deepsea is even better than the 43mm Sea Dweller. I prefer the non cyclops dial
In spring of 1981 I went out with the intention of buying a Rolex Submariner. When I got to the jewelry store they had sold the there Submariner and they showed me a Sea Dweller and I made the decision to to purchase it. Well I wore it everyday for 42 years.I had it serviced twice and it was absolutely flawless. I just gave it to my son and hopefully he'll enjoy it for years to come.
That's an amazing story! So happy to hear your Sea Dweller has served you well over all these years - even happier to know that it's now finding a new home on the wrist of your son 😃 well done!
Great watch!
I wanted a sub. they only had a sea dweller, and it fits me better. I'm glad I got the 126600
Good for you 👏 glad it worked out in your favor! Congrats my friend!
For me, it's the best looking Sea-Dweller ever made, the best all-around diver there is and my favourite Rolex piece. I'm fine with the fact it's not popular, makes it even more distinct and special, if anything.
The regular Sub is arguably a great piece of course, but to me it's nothing special. I never wanted one, not even when I started this hobby 20 years ago. The SD43 adressed the issues I had with the Sub40 116610 back un the day, namely the supercase, smallish size and ubiquity.
I look at my SS SD43 and it's purposeful, has a gritty demeanour, looks badass. Great size and proportions. Unique charcoal dial, almost tropical. The single red line reminds us of its pedigree. The sexy lugs are almost integrated with the end links of a generously wide bracelet perfectly tapered at the clasp. My ageing eyes are grateful of the cyclops' excellent magnification. Sharp cutting teeth on the bezel to remind us of its predatory nature. Make no mistake, it's a beast, a killing machine. This thing hits you hard. Nothing comes close in terms of overall package. To me, it's perfect.
I still vividly remember the first time I saw it at the AD in 2017 and tried it on, a mic drop moment. The kind of first impression you won't forget in a lifetime. I took it home, of course. So glad I did.
Respect, glad you found "the one" Rolex in the 126600 Sea Dweller that ticked your boxes! Like you said, it's so robust and mean. Definitely a timepiece that could easily outlive us and keep on ticking haha! Good on you for not going the "hype" route and for buying that speaks to you - I believe if more people did that we'd all be a bit more informed about our collections and we'd be able to speak to more than just "I bought this at X price and it's now worth Y price, how cool is that?"
I own a Sea Dweller, so proud of it
And rightfully so! It's an awesome piece!
You are one of the very few watch review channels that incorporates wide angle wrist shots! On the wrist but not macro. It's how youd see the watch looking down at your own wrist. This is my grail piece and hope to own one within the next year!
Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate you taking the time, and I hope to hear back from you once you've acquired this beauty for yourself my friend!
I hope to see your channel grow ... beautiful thoughtful production.
You're very kind - thank you for the support!
This is an excellent video 😍 Enjoyed it a lot 👍🏻
Means a lot - thanks for watching 🙌
New sub, keep up the great work man 👏 found you through the watch finder pod 👍🏼
Hey thanks so much - means a lot to me!
Beautiful videography!
You're very kind, thank you! I find it therapeutic filming in both my home studio and out in nature - glad you enjoyed it!
I have this watch and the James Cameron. I love both of them. They’re so comfortable and look fantastic on the wrist. The micro adjustment is second to none. Thanks
Two beauties, congrats! And yes! Super adjustable and way more wearable than most people will give credit!
I’ve just picked this model up and it’s amazing, I worried it was going to be to BIG but it actually fits perfect.
‘Great’ Video👍
Congrats on picking up a Sea Dweller! Glad you like it, and happy to hear you enjoyed the overview as well 🙌
A very well crafted video, and thank you. My AD suggested a Sea Dweller because of my wrist size and the more I look at it on wrist, the more prominence it has compared to the Sub. The SD over the Sub any day. Cheers!
Thanks Jason - really appreciate the kind words! Glad the AD mentioned this, and happy you find this video reassuring! Of course it's not for everyone (that's why there are so many different options in the wide world of watches) but you already know my stance on the SD :)
Great review. I truly love my SD43 126600. It is such a fantastic watch and fully agree it is a true tool watch that stands out in a sea of subs ❤
I’m glad this resonated with you 👍 and congrats on your SD43! It’s really just one of the most important and capable diver watches ever!
Great video. Personally, even though I have the money I can’t justify spending $14,000 on a watch so I went with an omega planet ocean for half the price. I felt a lot better about that.
Completely understandable - each person has a different definition of what "worth" is and if the ratio of what you get for what you're paying is off, makes total sense to go for what does tick all those personal boxes. Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching, wear your Omega Planet Ocean in good health!
Totally
Glad you agree 😄👍
Congrats on the video. One of the better reviews of this watch!!
Thank you - means a lot!
Great review! My first one too. Congrats! It’s really underrated and fantastic!
Thanks so much - glad you enjoyed it! And congrats to you as well! This watch will last a lifetime :)
@@thetimist absolutely! And word on the street is that the red writing for the 50th anniversary will soon go away so ours will become more special!
Great watch good video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great vid.
I've been on a wait list for 21 months for a submariner. Last week i got a call and was offered the sea dweller 43. I passed on the offer. And said i wanted to hold out for a sub.
A few days ago i went to the boutique with pastries to do damage control lol. They had demo models and showed me the sea dweller. I fell in love with it. So now I'm on a wait list for that and the sub, what ever comes first. Ive been depressed ever since i passed on that watch lol. Hopefully in a year or so, I'll get the call again.
Oh no! What a bummer and an emotional roller coaster for you! Rule #1 when watch shopping is to always try a watch on before making a call. I constantly try watches on whenever I possibly can just for fun. It's one thing to see it online and on other people's wrists, and a whole different world when you try it on for yourself :)
I was offered this watch today by an AD. Still thinking about it. I like the diameter as my wrist is a little above average at 7 1/8. The thickness is my only issue.
It's just such an absolute all-round beast of a watch! I'd say go for it, but then again I'm biased haha!
my wrist 6.75 and had the same concerned but i got my 2 weeks ago and cant stop wearing it for my daily. ANd i currently have a starbuck and this have been much more fun
@@dinhtran-ld4hz That's awesome! Congrats on adding the Sea Dweller to your watch box! Thanks for sharing with us 👏
Was flirting with a datejust 41 until i saw this one. It's going to he the next addition to my collection
I’m so glad to hear you’ve been entranced by this piece - it deserves more recognition 👍 hope you get one!
I couldn't decide between a Submariner or a Sea Dweller,opted for the S.D, no regrets 20 yrs later .
Congrats, great choice! Glad to hear it's served you well all this time!
Great video. I plan to get one but can’t decide on the all steel or the steel/ gold bi metal. Also the new GMT in steel/gold is gorgeous.
I realize the gold is susceptible to scratches. But it is stunning. Help me decide.🤷♂️
Thank you! That's a tough choice - I'll say it's easier to get the Sea Dweller from an AD since it's not a "hype" model when compared to basically any GMT II. So that might help you decide? As for all steel VS. bi-metal, that's even tougher to decide. On the one hand, all steel makes it more of a tool watch (whether it's the Sea Dweller or the GMT) if you go bi-metal it can be dressed up/down easier. Also note that the GMT II can be had on the Oyster AND Jubilee bracelet, and choosing the latter would make it more dressy than tool-y. Not sure if I helped, at the end of the day you have to be happy in your heart of hearts with the choice! Good luck though, "the hunt" is part of the fun! Do keep me posted though, I'm curious what you end up with :)
Once at the wrist it’s too hard to wear anything else. I’ve never seen something that attractive and well proportioned. A stunner.
Well said, and I absolutely agree!
This is why i chose a SeaDweller. My grail watch and I have this reference number. I love it. I just wish i could wear it more, but pretty risky in London
Good on you! It's just such a capable and awesome timepiece 👍 sorry to hear you're not really able to enjoy it more. I wore my Citizen Promaster when I visited London last year, I can't imagine not ever being able to enjoy the things we work hard for because of hooligans. Still glad you have it mate!
Same here In Chicago. Afraid to wear it out.
とても似合ってる!
Dōmo arigatōgozaimasu!
I love it. I really want a Sea-dweller. I have an Omega Planet Ocean as my daily wear which I adore. It’s not about one being better than the other I want both😂
Awesome! Agreed, I think the Sea Dweller would compliment the Planet Ocean nicely! I hope you'll message me back once you add it to your collection :)
Great review! Currently in the “waiting list” for one. A bit nervous it maybe too large on my 6.5 inch wrist but I’ve heard it’s wears smaller than the specs suggest. Thoughts?
Thank you 🤗 glad to hear the Sea Dweller peaked your interest! I’m 6.75 and with the shape of my wrist it looks (in opinion) great. I believe you should be fine. It’s not just the circumference of the wrist, but also the shape itself. Some people have a rounder more evenly circular wrist. Others more rectangular. So the circumference doesn’t tell the whole story. I’d recommend you try and find a place where you can try it on. Then also look at it in a mirror (3rd person) and that should put your mind at ease 👍 keep me posted, I hope you get yours soon!
You can buy one under retail right now. Almost bought one yesterday if fact. Wear what you like… but the 43 is perfect on my >8” wrist.
Its also my first
Rolex back in 2020. Still happy i hope on day my son will have it.
Congrats! It's a phenomenal watch - makes me happy to hear you want to pass it along to your son one day. Well done 👍
Thanks mate, I bought the new Airking for my sons birth in 2024 he wil get it when he graduate so i can wear it now. In about 4 months i will have my second son who also wil get a Rolex but then from 2024 🙌🏻🙌🏻 i hope the will have the same passion about watches as me. Greetz from Amsterdam🙌🏻🙏
Congrats 🎉 sounds like your sons are set with awesome Rolexes for the future 🙌 also awesome that you’re in NL. I’ve spent 2 years in Rdam and Hague, beautiful country, delicious food and awesome people!
@@JFK-1984 My third nephew enters the world next week and what a great excuse to own 3 Rolexes. One of them is the SD43 and my favourite. Also have the black dial Sky and Yachtmaster 42 white gold.
You need to try it on. The watch wears better than you'd think. No flying under the radar but I've worn mine on weeklong vacations everyday doing everything. Wears nicely tight or loose. My wrist is 17cm and it looks cool and it fetches a lot of complements. Cheers.
Completely - you get it! The dimension numbers scare people away, but people forget there's a lot more that goes into the "formula" on deciding whether or not a watch looks good on your wrist. So put it on and see! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience!
I also have this Sea Dweller in my watch box. It hardly ever comes out. It is beautiful but it is also loud. I don't wear it in the crowd or in the city, because I feel exposed. It's sad but I feel more comfortable with a JLC Reverso, Panerai or IWC Big Pilot on my wrist.
Glad to hear you've got this beauty in your collection - sorry to hear it doesn't get much mileage. Either way, enjoy it when you can my friend :)
Today bought! Absolut great ! And 15 k euro ❤
Big congrats! Wear it in good health - you've made a great choice!
It makes me have hope Rolex will one day bring back the 1680 red Submariner, but more than likely not. Until then, my Pelagos 39, reminiscent of the 1680 red, will do.
I believe they will, I really do. But time will tell 👍
I own this great watch 💪🏽🔥! (And that great fountain pen) unfortunately I don’t own a great avocado 😞
Hey 2 out of 3 isn't bad! Plus I think the avocado is probably the easiest one out of the 3 to acquire? Congrats on your Sea Dweller and also amazing fountain pen!
Cyclops - ug! - makes any watch a non starter for me. blocks view on most angles, looks like an old man watch even when angle is perfect so you can see the date. Great vid though, and you chose the correct watch I think! Also, nice editing and PNW images 👍👍
Thanks buddy, means a lot! I mean, yeah, the cyclops isn't for everyone. I just can't separate "Rolex" and "cyclops" in my mind. They go hand in hand (for me) but I still appreciate and respect your preferences my friend!
I agree. But it’s such a great looking watch I plan to get one.
Have this watch and I love it. Tried the sub on and couldn’t believe the hype, not my cup of tea.
Congrats! It all comes down to personal taste, but I happen to agree with you - the Submariner although a capable watch, it falls short (in my opinion) when compared to the Sea Dweller and that's totally understandable given the fact that this is literally by design 👍
The Fliplockm was at some point replaced with the Sea Dweller Glidelock. This feature is imho genius.
Absolutely agree! It’s a phenomenal addition 👍
Love me a great dive watch!
Right? Hard to beat them as they tend to be tough as nails!
Had it, sold it after 1 month. It’s very uncomfortable to wear because of the high case back and it makes that doesn’t sits right on the wrist and top heavy. For me, it’s sort of a design flaw. Got a DeepSea James Cameron and it feels much better on the wrist: It sits much flatter. I’m very happy with it
Interesting - it's wild that the larger DeepSea JC felt better than the Sea Dweller for you, but then again all wrists differ! Glad you found your perfect piece!
I love my sd43 mk1 dial ❤
Good on you! Did you pick it up in 2017 or later? Congrats 👍
@@thetimist I picked it up in 2017
@@raylegend808 Well done 👌
I prefer the MkII upgrade
@@davidofglenbrook4487 I do as well, although there's some debate amongst the hardcore folks on how the SD43 is really only the 50th Anniversary release ONLY if you got the 2017 Mk I (first year) but I prefer the little coronet at 6 o'clock so I'm with you on that 😄👍
When the watch came out, I thought it was unnecessarily large. After trying one on at the AD, I am a convert. It is the best looking diver from Rolex. But I won’t go near one until Rolex has officially fixed the problem of premature wear and inaccuracy with their 3235 movements.
That's indeed most people's reaction (too big) but that's why I highly recommend folks try on watches before writing them off - it's not just the dimensions of the watch, but your individual wrist size and most often forgotten, SHAPE. Interesting point on the 3235 premature wear/inaccuracy, I haven't heard anything about it. Will need to investigate - thanks for watching!
Great video. Sea Dweller would be my choice. However Sub probably better suits my wrist size.
Glad you enjoyed it! And I hear you on the size - I encourage you to try it on the wrist (Sea Dweller) or better yet, try on both if you can to compare 👍
Yes. Tried on both 2 wks ago. Now want both 😂
@@davidstorm2563 oh no 🤣 time to get creative and start saving for both then I suppose? 😅
@@thetimist got the SD 🎉. Unbelievable. So good.
@@davidstorm2563 Yooo that's amazing! Big congrats my friend! So happy you managed to get one! Welcome to the honeymoon phase, spoilers, it never ends with this watch 😄👍
SD43 is the best divers from Rolex collection
I'm glad you agree - thanks for watching 👍
When I stared looking in to Rolex I was kind lost with so many models and the sub was so popular that I thought it was the right choice until I saw the sd43 and men it was love on first sight, don’t get me wrong the sub is an icon for a good reason but once you see an sd43 the sub becomes boring
That's great to hear - like anything that's new you just don't know what you don't know. Digging through their watch catalog and discovering all their models is part of! I'm glad you found "the one" for you :)
I got the SD over the SM for the same reasons you listed. EVERYONE has a sub. Sea Dwellers are cooler
Sea Dwellers are indeed cooler, and more capable 👌 congrats well done!
I want the new solid gold one so bad. But not gonna happen lol
Not with that attitude 😅 I’m kidding of course! I do love the yellow and blue combo, but there’s no way I could imagine wearing that for an extended period of time!
116600 SD4K is the best
Sounds like that's the perfect watch, for you - how long have you had it for, and do you have any complaints or niggles?
Agree. You know your stuff, Craig.
I’ve had the 116600 since 2015 ish. It is the perfect watch that everyone overlooks. It’s a Sub on steroids. It’s rare and goes under the radar which I love.
@@craigmcbride526 It's definitely a cool piece - and much closer to the Sub in a few areas than the SD43 126600 which does lend itself to being more under the radar for sure!
Sub or the deepsea , the sd 43 is the jan Brady confused middle child I’m afraid😊
Sounds like you've got a preference locked in! I see it as the goldilocks version, not too big, not too small - either way glad there are options. Now if only they'd cost the same haha!
116600 SD4k is the best dive watch, ever.
I do like the SD4K but prefer the SD43 - personal tastes differ, but glad we've got options to choose from! Thanks for sharing.
No date Submariner FTW 😎
Starting to see a pattern 😅 no date Sub seems to have quite the following!
By This 2023 To AD, New 126600 ! for me the Best ! Better Than Submariner, DEEPSEA, for me !
Glad you like it :)
How big is your wrist?
Great question - I should probably put that in the description somewhere! 6.75 inches or 6 3/4 or six and three quarters circumference :)
Well let's be honest. There is only ONE best Rolex Seadweller and that is the Seadweller 4K the 116600 !😁
Haha the 4K is nice no doubt, but I picked the SD43 because I prefer the date cyclops - to me, that's a very Rolex "thing"
@@thetimistYes that pimp I don’t like. Besides that it is to big. The reason that people prefer a Submariner. But the 4K is a Submariner on steroids with perfect measurements. Also it was made for only 3 years. I also owed a Deepsea but the 4K is just the best 👍
Sub for sure imo.. there's a reason they are valued so highly. Recreational diving is 10-50 meters (50 being on the higher end) and then you have to factor in how many people actually take their Rolex into the ocean... probably not many. Regardless, both are completely obsolete so it basically comes down to what you want and your wrist size. If you want a beefy watch you already know which one to choose vs if you want a timeless classic. The Submariner wins in the looks department as it avoids the hideous date pimple.. if only the Sea Dweller had an optional no date version.
It’s true, the number of people that actually take their tool watches or divers into the environments they were designed to operate in (as mentioned in the video) is minuscule. Truly, it all boils down to preference of size/style/taste. Thanks for sharing 👍
Haha, no I'm in Washington State, not Canada. I included that little line more for comic relief (given that Canada Goose parkas are very expensive and some people like to wear their watches over their clothes, which only makes sense if you find yourself in an extreme climate like the arctic circle...but not at the mall haha)
Thanks for the kind words - I didn't mention the AR coating on my watch because it doesn't have it. There was no AR coating on any Sea Dweller model from 2022 or earlier, the AR coating (underside) was added in 2023. Great call out though for anyone that has a 2023 model or newer 👍
Also keep in mind that some watch brands don't include AR coating not because they don't want it as a positive addition, but because AR (external application on the crystal) can be scratched off and depending on the color/tint/hue of the AR coating it will look like tiny cracks or smudges on the crystal from certain angles. Breitling is a good example, they apply AR coating both top and underside and it's usually a blue hue - the top coating can get scratched (the sapphire is fine mind you, it's just the coating that gets affected) something to keep in mind.
Lastly, I don't recommend you buy anything to impress anyone. Ever. Because at the end of the day no one TRULY cares. Everyone has their own priorities, so basing your life choices or decisions on the hypothetical points of view of others is a losing battle, and the only way to win is to not play. So buy what you can afford and what YOU like. You have to be happy with what you have, because it's your money and your hard work. This applies to a Rolex or a Timex and everything in between 😄
@@thetimist HEH// Ièll take your word on that. Just thinking how much it woul suck to loose such an expesive watch somewhere in deep snow. :)) On the cuff of a parka..where it could slip off fairly eay (Ièd assume).
The watch...as i commented...still wodnering if it has a AR coating...heard later that a recent 71mm version of the the Sub now ha an AR coating...YTer didnèt say which yearémodel number.....OADD, Ièd think Rolex would have 'caught up' and added AR coastings on all their watches....dive or others....should be a standard feature....shrug...
@@AGC828 Again, the watch over your sleeve/parka was a joke - I don't recommend you do that, it's why I said it was for comic relief 😉
And again, my Sea Dweller, the one in the video, from 2022, does NOT have AR coating. The 2023 models and beyond DO have AR coating.
@@thetimist Ok thanks/ Good to note 2023 and beyond/ :)
Do you know from which model year the Submariner has the AR coating addedÉ I Know (or heard) it was the 2020 and on versionsÉ 126610....
Chunky monkey clown watch so heavy your going to have to see a doctor after wearing it for a while lol
I mean, if you have a weak wrist, then yeah you'll likely need to consult a doctor before even attempting to pick something like this up. I personally think it's fine, and the more you wear it the less difficult it is. Also, if you think the Sea Dweller is heavy, then don't even think about ever picking up an AP Royal Oak Offshore 😆
