Thank you so much guys. This was fantastic. Part of the Anthem song was from the Rush documentary (Beyond the Lighted Stage). I'm thinking that is where you recognize it from. The acoustic solo on Innuendo was by Steve Howe from Yes. (which i had mentioned in my email 😁). If I happened to get lucky to win again, I may do a whole Queen marathon. Really happy you guys enjoyed it, and thanks again.
    Ian

The Spanish guitar solo in Innuendo is Steve Howe
Steve happened to be recording in the same studio and met Queen
They played him this track and asked if he could provide the Spanish guitar solo
He agreed and they bought him lunch

Freddie's death caused me a great deal of pain. I cried almost every day for a year or more, while listening to songs from Innuendo. But that's why I love it so much. It's unquestionably the most personal music Queen ever recorded. And i love it.

Innuendo was the final album recorded and released during Freddie’s lifetime. And it was largely regarded by critics and fans as a return to form, and to their 70’s style. The title track and “The Show Must Go On” stand as their final epic tracks. (Highly recommended that when you react to “The Show Must Go On” you include the preceding track from the album “Bijou”, as they are very much a piece to be listened to together.)
Made In Heaven was begun during Freddie’s final months, but was set aside by the band following his death. It was finally completed using some previous outtakes, and reworking some of Freddie’s solo tracks for the band, and released in November of 1995. There are some really good tracks to be found there as well. But Innuendo was the real finale, while Heaven feels more like a coda to their studio career.

Obscured By Clouds is one of my favorite PF albums. I think you'll love it. Here we go...one, two, free, four...
It's interesting to note that Meddle came before Obscured By Clouds. "Echoes" from Meddle was already full-blown prog. And the recording of Dark Side had also begun before Obscured was written and recorded. So if Obscured sounds a bit less proggy it's because it was a soundtrack for a movie called "The Valley" and so had to fit itself to the subject matter with shorter pieces that would fit. More is another album that was a movie soundtrack, as you can see by the very short song lengths.

Innuendo by Queen is, for me, the best album ever recorded. The song Innuendo is a slap in the face to people not paying attention to the west's influence in the world, and vice versa. Innuendo the album is intellectual, playful, heartbreaking, and (apart from one track) literally perfect. Songs like Headlong, i'm Going Slightly Mad, Don't Try So Hard, Hitman, Bijou, The Show Must Go On... Please do the whole album! Adam Lambert brings the songs to life these days, to the sheer delight of us fans. We don't see him as a replacement, but as a vehicle to enjoy Brian & Roger playing the songs live. Fun fact - their live sound is in Surround Sound in 2024!!! So good.... soooo good. Cheers!

Stumbled across you both, great great reaction (intelligently). Being a Queen fan for 35 years and having seen them first for the first time at Live Aid in 1985 when I was 16 I was hooked forever. I saw them twice the following year in 1986, the last one being Freddie's last EVER live performance with Queen at Knebworth in August 1986. Again great reaction and I agree it sounds so much like Kashmir from Led Zeppelin and I think that was always in their mind when they did this song as Freddie always aspired had huge respect for them and loved Kashmir, the whole band did. Innuendo is such a complex song. Unfortunately Brian was not the one doing the flamenco but by Steve Howe. However, as always the heavy metal piece is by the Governor himself. We also have to mention the drumming by Roger which was amazing, and of course their silent weapon John Deacon on bass. Stay safe from Manchester, UK

I was watching a recent interview where Alex and Geddy were talking about when Neil joined the band and the first song they worked on together was Beneath Between Behind from this album. It was the first set of lyrics Neil presented to the band, according to Alex/Geddy. It's about the US according to Neil.
Ten score years ago, defeat the kingly foe
A wondrous dream came into being
Tame the trackless waste, no virgin land left chaste
All shining eyes, but never seeing
Beneath the noble bird, between the proudest words
    Behind the beauty, cracks appear
Once with heads held high they sang out to the sky
Why do their shadows bow in fear?
The guns replace the plow, facades are tarnished now
    The principles have been betrayed
The dreams's gone stale, but still, let hope prevail
    History's debt won't be repaid
Beneath the noble bird, between the proudest words
    Behind the beauty, cracks appear
Once with heads held high they sang out to the sky
Why do their shadows bow in fear?

Anthem was the song they were working on at the time Neil auditioned. "So what do you think of that riff, Neil?"... I'd say he nailed it. Geddy hit the lottery with Neil, and he knew it. This song really has the earmarks of the first "Progressive Metal" song in history! Rush would have barely been a blip on the radar If it weren't for Neil. Alex & Geddy needed this man to further their musical horizons. It almost seems like Divine Intervention that they found each other in the first place. RIP Professor...

The Innuendo Song and the Album was amazing. Freddie was realy sick at this time but he and all of the Band give it all to this Album.
You must Listen to the " The Show must go on". Brian wrote it but the Feeling is Freddie give Everthing to sing this Song. One of the best vocal Performance of him. And it give a lot of great singing of him.

Here’s a message to all your Patreon members. Is there anyone who will do a marathon of The Enid? I truly believe NicknLex would love this incredible Symphonic Rock band. In fact they are the founders of the genre from England in 1976.

SUGGESTION FOR A SONG WITH MIDDLE EASTERN INFLUENCE:
    QUEEN’S
    “MUSTAPHA”
(As usual, I prefer a LIVE performance because a live venue always brings out Queen’s best… and there are a couple of live recordings from the late 1970s to c.1980)
    ALSO…
    There’s a FANTASTIC song titled:
    “LITTLE FREDDIE GOES TO SCHOOL”
It is about a young Farrokh Bulsara (aka Freddie Mercury) and his early years in Zanzibar and in India!
The song is (mostly) sung by Esther Trousdale, with a sampling of Freddie’s vocals included… It came out as recently as 2015; proceeds from sales go to the Mercury Phoenix Trust Foundation, to combat AIDS in underdeveloped countries.)

@@NicknLex I’m sorry I get or seem to get on your case. Fact is I really do just want to help people because I know Wikipedia is pretty much useless. I started with Pink Floyd in 1971 buying Meddle. If you really want a treat watch them perform Echoes pt.1 and 2. Live at Pompeii It’s amazing and superior to the studio version in my opinion.

Back in my youth when I used to think I could play Bass I spent a lot of time learning this song. People always talk about YYZ or a few other songs (Digital man/Analog kid has some amazing bass) but this is one of the harder ones to master, imo. The opening bass is fast and has a lot of finger movement (not just 3 lines of open/closed) and is also done staccato style (muted after each note but the last in the cycle). It sounds pretty hard, it's harder than that. Then the more melodic part (which happens twice) Geddy sounds like he's just doing elaborate scale style work, but he doesnt do the same 8 bars exactly the same twice, they are just a tiny bit different each time, and not freestyle....he does the same changes at the same time every time he plays it. It's harder than it sounds.
If someone reading this plays bass, give this song a try.

Wow that sounds like a challenge indeed! Well I’m barely learning bass so I won’t be going for this one just yet! 😜 Thanks for the heads up and for watching, hope to see you around! 💗 Lex

I bought Obscured by Clouds a few times - on vinyl. For some reasons, the pressings I kept getting were flawed. The track listing was correct, but "Free Four" was replaced on the record by "Wot's Uh the Deal. So I heard that song alot, and never heard "Free Four" until Works came out. Never found out why that was. Thing with Free Four is that lyrically it prefigures The Wall very precisely.

More and Obscured by Cloufs are both soundtracks to really bad films. Don't waste your time watching them.
Innuendo was released in February 1991. Freddie died in November. The Spanish guitar was played by Steve Howe. The final album compiled the past songs Freddie recorded. He could only sing a few lines at a time, but pushed through to the end.

Lex, you really need to listen to YES' cover of Paul Simon's *America.* It's absolutely filled with Squire/Bruford ear candy. A lot of reactors have compared & contrasted YES' version to Paul Simon's, but there are extremely few similarities between them. The reason is YES used to play the Cover as an encore performance that was really an extended jam during the Fragile & The Yes Album tours. There's even a version of it on TH-cam featuring Tony Kaye on the Hammond Organ & not Wakeman. *You will be thrilled.*

    Apparently the premiere actually took place in 1967 with Syd Barrett, but the song changed and expanded. All five members are listed on the June 1968 album version;
According to the song, the electric guitar tracks were used and mixed by Syd and David. The lyrics come from a Chinese poem and were already used for Syd's song “Chapter 24” on the first album. Apart from his song "Jugband Blues" and the guitars for the 2nd song "Remember...", Syd Barrett didn't contribute much to the 2nd album. In the middle of the recording there was the famous exchange of the guitarists.
Anekote: After Syd's 2 single hits, I remember a BBC interview in which Roger sat like "a little mouse" next to the "big" Syd and only dared to say something when he was spoken to directly or Syd gave him the floor, a very strange situation, not at all as liberal as fans would like to remind Syd.

OK, Nick and Lex, you have now listened to three tracks from Fly By Night - Fly By Night, By-Tor and the Snow Dog, and Anthem - and now you need to listen a song you never hear on the radio and that I have been pleading for for a long time, Best That I Can. It is a quick, uptempo hard rock song from start to finish. By the way, Best That I Can starts immediately after the quick ending to Anthem.

Very cool marathon Ian. Anytime I see Rush I'll definitely be tuning in. But then you throw Floyd & a great song by Queen, really good stuff.
Lex, it was good to see you enjoying a marathon. Nick, you & Lex might have heard Rush's Anthem on their documentary, Beyond The Lighted Stage. But you definitely had to of heard it, although nowhere as good, but it's on Malmsteen's Inspiration album.
But you guys are right, once Neil came along, he took them to another level. Plus he took over writing the lyrics.
    Great marathon guys.

Sgt Pepper's influenced musicians for years afterwards.
Freddie died the same year that this was released. Paul Rodgers from Free/Bad Company stood in for Freddie for a while before Adam.
