This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Ayn Rand's essay "the Objectivist Ethics" (In The Virtue of Selfishness), specifically on her discussion of the virtues she recognizes - rationality, productivity, pride, independence, integrity, honesty, and justice.

I don’t really understand Rand, but this was another great presentation. Thx Dr. Sadler!

Neither do I but yes Dr Sadler seems to have explained it in an easily digestible manner. Especially since I'm too lazy to read Atlas Shrugged and her other books.

I've never read any Rand, so I'm going off the video alone and I am sure she has probably answered this. Given her position explained in this video, I wonder how she can be supportive of capitalism due to the exploitation and alienation it produces. It feels as if she either would have to deny that exploitation and alienation is produced by capitalism or that it doesn't count as a problem to her argument. Regarding exploitation, which is by Marxist understanding taking the surplus value that somebody else has produced and keeping it for yourself would have to fall into her category of parasitic behaviour. I imagine she might object that this is a consensual agreement, therefore legitimate, but Marxist theory has a response to that as well. Thoughts?

Well, you'll want to actually read the piece. Not her fiction. The book this video is focused on

That’s exactly that, it’s a consensual agreement among rational individuals in a market where there are other choices for both the employer and the employee. It is the invisible hand as written by Adam smith leading two people to the choice with greatest return to them.

I think you're hitting the run time sweet spot for the youtube algorithm. I hope it helps you get more notice and liking the new series format. +1

You realize I've been doing core concept videos for about 5-6 years now. There's nothing new about this format

@@GregoryBSadler Yes but many are a bit on the short side of run time compared to the closer to 20 minute ones. Supposedly that's an ideal run time for episodes now. The algorithm keeps changing so who knows what the next one will favor but the wind is at your back right now, so to speak. Wishful thinking probably but I feel you deserve more recognition.

This is an impressive overview of an influential writer's thinking. I'm unimpressed by Rand's selfcentredness and disturbed by the selfishness her influence has encouraged among US politicians and others, but this explanatory video was well worth the watch. Thank you Gregory Sadler.

I just shoot the length of video needed for discussion the ideas. If it happens to fit the algorithm, that's good
