That one bedroom being one tile wider than the other three is driving my OCD slightly batty. Great video series, though. Can't wait for more.

My memory is letting me down a little, but I think you can force work in a predefined area such as harvesting a crop that's about to die to frost. Create an allowed area under Architect > Zone > Expand Allowed Area. Set the pawn to that area under Schedule > Allowed Area, and make sure they are set to only work for the appropriate period. You can create or rename areas at either menu. Of course you may have to adjust work priorities.

Caravanning is one of those things that drives me to try to twist the game into something totally different from what it is. A mod for traveling after sundown, a mod for riding horseback, a mod for nonlethal weapons, a mod for establishing temporary camps, a mod for hiring mercenaries, a mod for visiting friendly cities so I can borrow their comms console, and probably three others I've forgotten. And another three I wish existed! All because some neurotic part of me is fixated on raiding enemy bases and taking prisoners.
It would take a fraction of the effort and resources to build a serpentine tunnel and capture raiders with heat when they come to me, but nooo, we can't have that. I've spent so much brain juice trying to find reliable early-game ways to rock up on a pirate base and bag them.
A jogger with a shield belt can run them around over traps, but they often lose their legs or bleed out before I can evacuate them due to the go-juice. And there's no telling when the whole base will get tired of the loitering and attack, so you pretty much have to dedicate days on your main base to building and packing traps in advance. Skip is pretty good, but you have to cheese the yeoman rituals and pray for just the right level 4 psycast out of the neuroformer. Longjump and coagulate genes help, but they're far from a total solution. Toxic buildup seems like a no-brainer, but as best I recall, the levels of concentration needed ruin the prisoners' health. Shock lance definitely works, but it's not available in any kind of volume early on. Raider ideology gives small lumber camp targets and things, but they're only available when the game feels like it. Substantial structures on enemy bases just draw attacks, so a heat chamber over a geothermal vent doesn't really work. And the bloody AI for base raiding has them permanently desert the settlement at around 50% downed, so you can't even distribute damage too much unless you want to trek even farther away for the next capture. If only I could enjoy playing the game as intended a little more!

I note that you don't use a medical bed.. I thought that improved the medical doctoring

There are two different things: Medical Beds to research, these are Hospital Beds iirc, which actually are better for doctoring.
The medical bed assignment on each bed just tells the pawns to prefer this one in case of medical cases.

i don't think i'm understanding this properly. is there a way to send your caravan somewhere, and then when they arrive there, get out and explore that new map? cause i have a quest for mining steel, so i figure i need to arrive there and then mine the steel out. but i didn't see you doing that in this video. all i saw was you arrive at the destination, and do a bunch of trading without getting out and exploring a new map. if you pressed "attack", would you have loaded onto the map? jw, thanks

Yes, if you press "attack", the game will load a map representing the town/village you have chosen to attack. The quest that ou have for mining steel will load in a small map containing the steel deposit, and all you need to do is mine out as much of it as you can carry, then "reform caravan" to return home with the steel. To explore a different tile, you can set up a "temporary" town or village, this will enable you to hunt/mine a different area, this area will be the same size as your home tile, but the terrain and resources will be different. There can be "Ancient Dangers" on this tile too, indeed there is a strategy involving setting up a temporary base, just to raid the Ancient Danger, for loot and weapons/prisoners. It is important to note that the game will prevent you from setting up a new town or village within 2 squares of another town, regardless if they are friendly or not, and if you set up within 4 tiles you will harm your reputation with that faction if you remain for longer than 15 days. Once you are finished hunting, mining, exploring, you need to set up a caravan to return home, and when your colonists leave the temporary tile, it is important to click on that tile, then press "abandon", which will remove that temporary town/village, but will also prevent you from setting up a colony on that tile again, so be sure to get everything you want from it before you press "abandon".
