    Great tutorial. A few points from another tomb-raider (playing on regular "losing is fun" and researching) inspired by Francis:
    1. You can keep your team quite small
    I have six pawns now but I started with one and for most of the time only had four. As long as you have the skills covered a small team is fun, fast, and effective. That said, it's really hard to get enough anima grass with fewer than five tribals. There's just not enough time before something drives you off the map.
    2. Be picky about your recruits
    You'll get a lot of recruit options from the ancients and you don't need many colonists so only recruit the best of the best and be prepared to banish regularly.
    3. You can play without angering the ancients
    I'm on year six and still friendly with the ancients (my theme is that we're rescuing them). This means opening the caskets is generally (but not always) easier. This is really useful in the first couple of years when you're less powerful. Don't worry, you'll have LOTS of opportunities to collect goodies (by year two you'll be saying "oh, just another charge rifle and marine armor, nothing good). You can strip the pre-downed ones and stuff them back into the caskets without angering them. Also, make sure you check the ones that come out dead because they might have gold or other goodies in their inventory that don't drop. Side note: cryptosleep caskets will provide all the steel you need.
    4. High quality bedrolls are very effective
    You'll have a bunch of leather, so make bedrolls until they're all masterwork and sell the rest. One the subject of beds, check the ones generated on the map. I picked up a legendary double bed on the very first tile and have been using it since. No need for hospital beds!
    5. Be careful about your mod choices!
    I'm actually mostly based now because I had more than three straight years of map events (psychic rain, volcanic winter, toxic fallout, drought, the long night, toxic fallout again) that made nomadic life difficult (in some cases it would have been possible but thematically I felt like my troop would settle down). Except for the toxic fallout the events are from Vanilla Expanded Events. Another difference between my playthrough and Francis's is that because mods like VE Vikings, VE armor, VE furniture, and Expanded Prosthetics add in lots of new items I see far fewer of the vanilla goodies like archotech parts and neuroformers (In six years I've seen only two archotech parts and only one neuroformer). This is because the additional items reduce the chance that the best core goodies will become available.
    6. It's VERY important to split off a single pawn before settling!
    If you settle with the whole caravan all of your junk gets dumped in the center and it's a hauling nightmare. EDIT: Also, when you split the caravan the selection will default to the main caravan and sometimes BOTH caravans will have the same leader's name, so make sure you settle with the single person. Really frustrating to do it backwards!
    7. Use Fluffy's Work Tab
    I can't recommend this mod enough. It simply splits the core jobs into discrete tasks so that you can have some pawns doing one task (like sowing), while not doing another or doing it at a lower priority (like harvesting). You can also do things like set lower level builders to repair/ deliver resources to frames and reserve higher level ones for the important work. In this playthrough the most important task is "load/unload caravans." I uncheck unload from everyone. This means the pack animals don't get unloaded unless I manually drop their gear from the gear tab. So instead of having all of your junk cluttering up the place it stays on the animals until you zone them to where you want them and drop it. This also prevents some yahoo from unpacking the doomsday and leaving it on the edge of the map. You do have to drop everything before you load a caravan or use the items, however, as gear on animals isn't considered available. I also set "load" to priority one so that when it's time to go everyone drops what they are doing and loads the caravan but doesn't traipse across the map to haul random stuff like two berries.
    8. Use "uninstall all"
    In the orders tab you'll find a very helpful order called "uninstall." You can use this to uninstall everything. You can also use Fluffy's Work Tab to set uninstalling (and installing) to priority one! I lost a masterwork double bedroll and a legendary chess board by not uninstalling them (it's easy to miss items when there's a lot of clutter in the room)
    9. When you go, go
    When you're ready to go it's really important to get off the map quickly before moods drop and something nasty catches up with you, so fine tune that routine. Sometimes it's helpful to pack a smaller caravan and send it ahead, especially if you've just acquired a bunch of valuable stuff and the settlement you want to trade with is out of the way.
    10. Convert silver to gold
    You lose money on every transaction but before long your biggest problem will be too much stuff and too much wealth. Gold is light and everyone takes it. You'll get to the point where wealth is a liability, so just focus on buying the best gear and dumping the rest. Until I settled my raids were embarrassingly easy because wealth was under 100k. Less stuff means fewer animals to manage as well and faster travel times, which equates to better moods.
    11. Watch your rec type boredom carefully
    Your pawns will get bored of the same kind of rec, so it's helpful to build/buy heavy stuff like billiards tables and poker tables, uninstall the light stuff, and have everyone focus on the new rec. Then just abandon the stuff you can't carry. It's also helpful to buy chemical rec items like chocolate, ambrosia, tea, etc. If you only have a few rec sources everyone gets bored at the same time, which can cause cascading mental breaks.
    12. Manage your animals well
    Donkeys are great as they haul and Dromedaries are also good for a steady supply of milk. Bison are good as wool producers, caravan animals, and tanks. I'd keep a few elephants if I could tame them as they haul, tank, and carry a lot. Don't keep slow animals like chickens or yaks, and you might want to keep just one sex to avoid pregnancies. Herbivores are easiest because you never have to worry about food. If you're using the alpha animals mod a couple of groundrunners will take care of your mining and the aves (giant flightless birds like the ones in Nausicaa) are good caravan animals because they're fast (they also haul and have a nasty bite). They can't carry much but they're good for advance parties. It's really helpful to have some good handlers early on as you can also tame valuable animals and sell them off at the next stop and you want your all of your animals trained in guard so they don't flee. Slaughtered tame animals provide 50% more meat, meat sells well for its weight, and the young ones will slow you down, so... (sad animal noise).
    13. Prebuild
    Buildings are lighter than their resources, so make traps before moving on aside from that I don't min-max weight because you have so much wealth anyway you don't really need to. It's helpful to take wood with you so that you can start building immediately though.
    14. LWM's Deep Storage mod
    I use this mod to make realistic shelves. It's not essential but useful to remove the clutter.
    15. Use space well
    If you're in a forested area there's nothing stopping you from dividing your building into two rooms and flooring the barracks part with wood. This won't take long once you have decent builders and will significantly improve moods without expensive, heavy statues.
    16. Don't be afraid to settle for a bit
    Unless it's a hard rule for the playthrough it's helpful to settle for a couple of seasons to grow a bunch of corn (which lasts a long time without a freezer), stock up on supplies, get moods up, knock out some research, and do some crafting.
    17. Finally, I'm not sure but maybe Francis has the number of tombs per tile turned up? He seems to have several per tile. I use the regular settings and I've only seen double tombs once out of about 25 and one of them was almost empty.

      excellent summary. #6 is very important which FJ missed in his excellent summary. #17 - He uses large map tiles. The medium sizes only produce 1 tomb per tile (and sometimes not at all)

    Chemical consumption recreation is also available while caravanning, if i do a lot of travelling i always create special drug policy for it. Bear a day if you are rich, or bear every two days if recreation below 30 for cash low cash time. Technically psychite tea or smokeleaf would work too, but personally i prefer saving psychite tea for cheap mood boost during combat, and smokeleaf has too big debuffs.
    Also to boost foraging you need better sight, while manipulation dose affect foraging too, it caps at a 100%.

    i would add to this and say when you are strong enough you can just bust straight into the tomb and just set up in there, setting up inside the tomb straight up rather than an outside base, its a bit riskier but also takes less time to get into the good stuff. Also for berries i have been not eating berries but collecting them and then settling a tile with them and making pemmican while busting the tomb is pretty nice to have as well.
    Try and keep the colonist numbers small as well, randy keeps giving me wanderers and random paralytic ablasians i dunno how francis has managed to keep his numbers so low. More than ten starts to get unwieldly, still doable but more tedious.

  • @nehpets216
    @nehpets216 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you want Plant skills to make the travel between tiles easier just chop down the plants in each new tile with the one you want to level the skill. You can use the wood to craft a bunch and leave it behind if it's not worth selling and have the cook practice making Pemmican with whatever was harvested before leaving that too if the weight is a concern.

    • @gekkobear2
      @gekkobear2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it might be a room for morale purposes; but it's not indoors for the concept of stuff rotting away.
      Stuff normally rots fastest in water (or during rain), outdoors, unroofed. And all 3 of those matter from what I've seen.
      (for a solo naked tribal run; I found putting rotten corpses in outdoor unroofed water gets them gone faster)
      A room with a roof and at most 3 unroofed spots counts as "indoors" to stop that decay from what I've seen (so long as you don't have stuff on those 3 spots OFC).

You and Rhadamant are pushing the limits of Rimworld playthrough capabilities. It would be cool to see you do a sea ice playthrough, possibly a nomadic sea ice run. Rhadamant's was the only sea ice run I have seen that stuck to a vanilla sea ice tile and managed it beautifully. I think you and him are the few that can accomplish a lot through vanilla.

      I am using the side arms mod, which is a bit of a massive cheat. Not sure how I could make sea ice entertaining though, it would be a fight against scares resources. I think the big issue would be at 500% threat and sea ice temps the odds of mechs go way up, Centipedes would wipe you before you could get a decent foot hold.

      There are some really big difficulty jumps with nomadic playstyles on high threat. The first tomb is really dicey - you have low skills, no weapons better than bows, no armor, and a tiny amount of time to set up traps, raid the tomb, and recover from wounds, before you get raided by something nasty.
      The second difficulty jump is after you raid the first tomb. You now have a ton of wealth, but most of that wealth won't help you fight off raids. It's a race against time to trade your useless wealth for useful items.
      The third difficulty jump is getting psi powers up. Before you have lots of level 6 casters with berserk pulse, every single raid is a potential game over.
      Even after you survive all three difficulty jumps, you are still limited by having a small number of pawns (since you can't farm, and can't feed a large number of pawns off of hunting animals). RNG will continue to bring you within inches of death.

You can hit 3 tiles in a day doing this. You really only miss out on recreation, and you will have to stop eventually if you want to craft stuff/ gain phyfocus. But if you just want to open tombs this way is much much more efficient.

      Playing nomadic now you have a couple of choices, use elephants and/or Thrumbo, (they still work the same as in this video) they are a bit tricky to get your hands on though. Alternatively use an animal hitching posts to keep the regular pack animals from wandering off, though it does make feeding them a bit tricky.

    I wonder if you could do a semi-nomadic play through where you have a central base and you send out raiding party on to other tiles to raid the tomes. Then you could move your main base if needs be.

    • @ichifish
      @ichifish 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that's what I ended up doing. You have the issue of not being able to settle directly next to a settled tile or on an abandoned tile, but it's totally doable. I have Vanilla Expanded Events and since the beginning of the third year I've had almost continual base-confining events (psychic rain, drought, the long night, volcanic winter, and regular old toxic fallout). Technically I could have kept up the nomadic lifestyle but I thought thematically the pawns would have settled down. At first it was temporary, but they've grown accustomed to it and now I just send out 1-2 pawns occasionally to bag a tomb or grab one when sending out a trade caravan. At this point we're advanced/wealthy enough that the tombs don't offer much compared to the threat of getting a huge raid while a couple of pawns are gone (I only have six colonists). I mean sure, I could pick up some marine armor, but my crafter can make better stuff and I can make more money that I can spend with our haberdashery. In the early/mid game though it's such an OP strategy that I expect it will be nerfed in future updates.

That said, I realized something by comparing my playthrough to FJ's: mods like the VE ones add a lot of items, reducing the opportunity to get the really good vanilla items. I didn't see a single neuroformer or archotect part for the first four years because the additional items from the VE mods (also had VE weapons and armor) reduce the chance that the vanilla items will appear.

    • @ichifish
      @ichifish 3 ปีที่แล้ว

       @Nicolas Bram Raiders, traders, and dangers aren't coded to have specific items; they're coded to pull from tables of potential items until they hit their point caps. Even on vanilla there aren't guaranteed items, it's just that some raids/locations/settlements have a more limited pool to draw from so the likelihood of something appearing increases. Thus having more mod items in the pool reduces the chance that vanilla items appear. For example I got a lot of Viking artifacts like cornucopias and lightning generators and crypto weapons/armor from VE Vikings instead of archotech parts/vanilla gear/vanilla artifacts. It's the same way events and threats are determined: if you have mods that add events you're less likely to see vanilla events. I raided more than 30 tombs and caravanned constantly, so I've got a good data set to compare with FJ's.

    9:40
    "If they stayed there forever they'd eventually starve to death. They're only producing 0.92 foods per day."
    That's actually not true. When hunger gets below the "hungry" threshold, their hunger rate is half the normal rate (0.80 per day instead of 1.60). If the pawn is "very hungry", their hunger rate is even slower at 0.40 per day. Plus. while a pawn is starving they are still foraging for food even though they aren't losing hunger (although some of it will still be lost later since pawns recovering from malnutrition have a 50% to 60% higher hunger rate). Point is that if your pawn doesn't have a high growing skill enough to stay well fed, they will become hungry and receive a mood penalty, but their growing skill would need to be very low to actually starve to death.

Might make for easier gear recovery and prisoner taking, right?

      As a tomb-raider myself I'd say it seems totally possible and might be good for the early game, but you would run the risk of killing the downed ones and friendlies would walk through the door, letting the others out. Spike traps work well because friendlies will dodge them. It's really just how much time you want to put into prepping / how cheaty it feels, as it's easy to build a spike trap maze.

    Yeah sometimes I want to go nomadic after all the disasters my colony runs into. I couldn’t stomach 500% difficulty though, I don’t even play regular difficulty, I think I have it ramped down to something like 30%. I think that’s just because I’m not great at the combat, the micro managing irks me and I generally prefer a gentle challenge in games rather than a stress fest. I might try this play style though, maybe rescue the ancients instead of murdering them. Snd fuck the empire, how viable is it to just find neuro-watchamacallits amd gain psy levels yourself? Do you have to just do the anima trees? I don’t think I’ve ever managed above a level two or three psycaster with like, okay-ish abilities.

    • @FrancisJohnYT

      Getting levels with the empire is tough for the last few, getting up to knight is fairly possible. But for nomadic you have to give it to an ascetic or they will get unhappy for not having a throne room.
      Gaining levels from the tree is not to bad, it just takes a bunch of time. Minimize the distractions and keep everyone but food producers around the tree and you can max them out fairly quick.
