Good job on converting the bus. I think it's a great idea. My Grandpa turned a 1940s bus into a motor home in the 60s. I was really young but remember how fun it was going camping in Colorado.
That's a pretty awesome bus conversion. That would be a perfect adventure rig for fishing and hunting trips. Chasing stripers up and down the coast in an rv bus with a lifted wrangler on the back, let's go. Just need to mod up a nice roof rack for extra storage.
that is a great job you did on your bus conversion my friend I'm jealous of you I live out to my van as well but I did my own my E350 I buy at my old high top it's good we can do DIY instead of making I'm going to a manufacturer you do yourself to save a lot of money you did a great job my friend excellent job...
WOW! Super cool! I have a little 4 x4 and my original idea was to convert a short school bus and add a tow. I don't have special tires or anything, I guess that's why you needed some kind of flatbed.
Love Troy’s enthusiasm and have respect for his knowledge re: his build. As a picky woman, I would have to have a bathroom to weekend in this bus. But I still love it!!! Good luck with your future add-ons! 😎✌️🤙🤘😎
Liked it, smart conversion, turn that guy lose out West and North to Deadhorse, checked out his channel, he's raring to go. Hope he grabs some inexpensive panels from SonTan Solar in Arizona and some steel to build his rack and hits the road within six months. Go!
OMG... love the Jeep!! Such a clever idea with the bus.. never seen anything like this.. so cool! The coolest part though is how sweet and down to earth this young man is.. :D
Man, whenever I get the space to store and operate on a school bus, I'm getting my money together to make something like this. I'd go the extra mile to make it a fully livable, off the grid RV, but I love the idea of making it a toy hauler as well. I may even make it more friendly towards mounting an ordinary family sedan for those times where this needs to stay at the RV park while you drive around town. Thanks so much for the insight on titling, insuring, and a rough estimated total cost to build something like this. Puts it into perspective and gives hope that this can happen some day if you're handy.
Very nice idea and execution. Nothing extra just what he needs. And thanks for asking him how to title the rig. Very good job as usual Patrick. I know I said it before but thanks again for letting the people talk and explain their rig. Blessings from Da Bronx!!!
Very clever toy hauler! With a bit of elbow grease you did the job yourself, bravo! Slicing a bus in half must have been loads of fun! Simply amazing you did that. Thanks for explaining how you attached the rear section back to body - combination of riveted metal plates and welding points. Thanks also for explaining the titling and insurance process. Here are the steps I wrote out for myself: To convert School Bus Title to Motorhome RV title in NJ state: 1. Remove all school bus signs, cover up lights, stop sign, decals, and paint over the yellow body. 2. Remove all seats inside, and make it look homey with furniture, sink, bed, couch, fridge, cookware, etc. 3. Get school bus weighed on a certified CAT scale. 4. Apply for RV title with photos and weight, and it may take 3-4 months to get title from them. Apply for Insurance: 1. Once title is in hand, apply for insurance. 2. Never mention the words 'school bus' to insurance company. 3. Mention '2001 Thomas Freightliner RV' with photos. 4. RV insurance is much cheaper. 5. You don't need a Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) if you are driving an RV. 6. However, some states may require a CDL if your bus has air brakes, but NJ was okay. I'm very interested in the paint you used to do the exterior. I looked up Sherwin Williams Direct to Metal Paint that you mentioned. It comes as an Industrial Acrylic and also as an Alkyd Enamel. I assume you used the oil based Enamel, right? Some questions: 1. What did you use to brush it on - brush, roller, mohair roller, other? 2. What solvent did you use to dilute it, clean brushes - Xylene, Mineral Spirits, Acetone....? How easy was it to find the solvent in your state? CA has so many anti VOC laws that paint products are hard to find. 3. How many coats did it take? 4. How is the color holding up in the sunlight and weather? Any fading, flaking, peeling, etc? 5. Would you have done it differently now that you have lived with it? I have an RV to paint and research into paints is difficult. Bedliner? Automotive? Specialty paint? So much to know and its pricey so experimenting is not an option. My tip to you: Fabric.com has Roclon Blackout rubber cloth at $2/yd on sale at 60" width. Effective for backing your curtains. Blocks out light, insulates a bit, and prevents curtains fading in sunlight. Good stuff!
what young guy that is awesome.. now that's DIY that's what I'm talkin about I would love to do something like that that is awesome great job by friend great job that's DIY not manufactured DIY yes..
Great project! Keep an eye out for cracks on the frame rails behind the rear suspension due to the weight being carried. I can tell you're creative and a hard worker!
Sweet build. Incremental construction on things like this are what makes it affordable and ends up with the best finished product compared to a big budget and trying to cram everything in before a deadline. I've never looked into a schooli but can you add water tanks underneath for clean and grey?
This is my Dream. I personally ride 2 wheeled vehicles. So I would just take of enough to either hold 4 dirt bikes or a dirt bike and one four wheeler. Pretty sweet. Just enough to go out for the week and ride. Awesome dude

Very cool, these types of things interest me a lot, I've been wanting to get away from trailers for some time. Nice build. I saw a Bus build like this down in Moab Utah last fall, it was badass! I think the dude had it on some bigger tires, they almost looked like a smaller military MTX, no idea but it was cool.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. I'm thinking about getting one of these to build an RV/car hauler thing also. $400 is really cheap for 12 months. I know that varies on multiple factors, but that's cheap.
Great build. This may already be in the comments, I'd consider wiring in the brake and signal lights from the bus to the jk for added safety. I see vehicles flat towed wired that way.
Perspex deck, slide out from the side solar panels that double as undercover area, lithium battery system so everything apart from diesel is free....fucken mint.👌 Cool build dude.
