The iPhone X Controversy

- The year was 2017, and Apple was gearing up for a milestone. It was the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone, and they were celebrating it with the introduction of iPhone X. This was no ordinary release; it was Apple’s statement to the world about the future of smartphones.
IPhone X was unveiled at the Steve Jobs Theater in September 2017. The event was filled with anticipation and excitement as Apple fans and tech enthusiasts around the world waited to see what the company had in store. - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี

Other than face id, it wasn’t really ahead of its time. It was just catching up to what android was offering

@wombadoo4229he’s not being rude. Apple explained does not do long vids often.
I LOVE when he makes the longer video. More time for the nostalgia dopamine to kick in. 🥳

I remember everyone hating it. Just like 90% of all new things, it's initially hated, then loved after 4-5 years pass.
@@huzzzer6083Same. I almost turned it in for an iPhone 8, but after a few months I got used to it.

Bruh, I found an iPhone X 256GB in a recycle bin, from $1149 to recycled in 7 years. It was in mint shape, and it was not only FMI off but already reset.
@user-gn6tk2yi6g There was also an iCloud locked iPhone 11 in there

@@Piggy991Maybe Australia. People go through phones like that here. But I miss my XS 😅
iPhone X had the best design even if you buy one used today it feels premium and dated it was truly ahead of its time, I prefer the rounded edge now
Yeah, flat edge never felt comfortable in palm
Literally the main reason why I still keep the X alongside my current iPhone 13 Pro. The compact size + rounded edges still wows me in today and I still believe that it's only 5 years old at most
I finally removed a D-Brand skin I had on the back since 2020 when I first got the phone. Man, I can’t believe I was missing out on how smooth the glass back feels all this time. Made me like Xs Max all over again. Definitely still feels premium.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max is also a great option, having ultra wide camera and more software updates

Half way into the video and I'm still watching an advertisement from 7 years ago. Why?
This was the last phone that made me excited... I miss that feeling. Today it "We have usb c!" and "We have AI to tell you what food is in that picture!!!!"
I switched after that phone everything else was going to bobo
The day they will bring back the headphone jack might be the day I will finally be truly excited for an iPhone.
I remember being a sophomore in high school when this was announced. Literally everyone in school was talking about it and wanted it. I still remember people gathering around a person who had it lol. There was a lot of hype behind the phone
I remember it too, I would just use my ancient iPod touch and people would come after me thinking I had an iPhone X, and I would pull out my other ancient iPod and they'd go insane thinking I had two and I was rich or something. They were just old iPods from 2009, not two white iPhone Xs.
can't fix stupid
@iPodee what model?
As a huge iPhone X hater at that time, I thought there was no way I’d give up my home button. I pulled out my 6s+ the other day and I thought it was funny how awkward I found it to be. A significant part of the selling of new tech is convincing people the “way we’ve always done it” is not always better. I’m still upset about the headphone jack though.
It’s kind of funny how outdated the home button is when you get so use to the gestures on the slab of glass
The iPhone X was incredibly expensive to the point where it maintained the same 999$ price point until now.
No cap this script sounds exactly like a chatgpt response. The summary at the end, the specific words
I find it interesting how Apple builds upon the previous iPhone models. Nowadays, they put features from a “Pro” model phone from the previous generation on the base model of the next generation. (Dynamic Island as an example)

true but at this point the smartphone design is pretty finished.. what more can they do? All future regular slab smart phones are going to look the same and are only separated by software features, which are getting less and less impactful each year because of how mature the smartphone space is
@@The92Waffles At this point, making technology more modular and customizable is where new phones could differentiate themselves. The problem is that companies don't want to do this as it is not profitable for them.
Making a device that can come apart means that people can replace individual parts when they are no longer useful or are outside of their lifespan, which is tremendously cheaper than buying a new phone or device.
It has come to a point where companies like apple, dell, hp, samsung and more keep trying to tell people that devices are unrepairable and need to be replaced because the technology is "too advanced" to be repairable.
This has bled down to everything from phones to even dishwashers and now cars. Cars that were previously serviceable by anyone, that you could easily find new parts for.

8:20 - Apple did not set the standard of maximum screen ratio. In contrary, Apple was the last one who adopted this trend.

Can we talk about AirPower never seeing the light of day?
It's curious how they couldn't figure it out to this day. It has been 7 years now. Maybe the solution makes their design or the pricing impracticable.
Another downside of the notch was that it took away a longtime iPhone staple: battery percentage. We could no longer constantly see it in the status bar, and instead had to swipe down to Control Center just to see the exact percentage. Battery percentage on Face ID iPhones would not come until iOS 16, which was released in 2022.
no u just had to manually go turn it on, i had it on when i got my iphone xr in 2018
@@ahliaspobre true. But to clarify, the percentage option ONLY appeared starting in iOS 16. All the prior versions of iOS (11 to 15) did not have battery percentage as a selectable option on iPhones with Face ID.

But still, there remained the ugly notch and its ugly variants.
Where is the controversy? What is the video about?
How some people disliked the notch and new way of navigation. As well as some suspicions that Apple was storing their Face ID data
The iPhone X had significant changes that were controversial in nature, many people didn't like it at first.
Also the $1,000 price shock.
But the general public in the US failed to understand that the $1,000 is for the device if you pay it off immediately (which I highly recommend, because of the fact that you can use MVNOs or prepaid plans, or change carriers later at any time without contracts or unlocking). Most people I knew instead did monthly financing with their carrier. Likewise, the carriers switched to more transparent pricing models (how much you pay per month for the phone) by the time the iPhone X came out.
The iPhone 3G from 2008, on the other hand, was subsidized in the US for a $200 down payment + 2 year contract.
As someone who has followed the iPhone market since 2009, I know that pricing models have changed from subsidies and contracts to monthly pricing.

I did. I upgraded to an 8 from a 6 in September 2017. You have to remember back then that iPhone customers were not used to the prices like they are today and I was put off by how much the X was. @@itischeckMy X is at 72% capacity and handles the same way as OPs comment. It still does stuff, just at a much worse way. I’ve had mine since release day.
Then somethings wrong because I had an X until getting the 15 Pro and never experienced lag or issues like that ever.
Then it may be a problem since that’s not how iphones work. Iphones never lag
The iPhone X was a game changer, I remember using it for the first time & I loved the Face ID feature which I still today!
Thanks to this phone, the prices of other phones skyrocketed. I got a flagship phone in 2017 for £600. The following year, the equivalent flagship was £800. This was even worse for other phones which went straight up to £1000.

iPhone 8 introduced wireless charging, not the iPhone X! 4:10
But they got introduced around the same time
They were both announced in the same event. The 8 and 8 plus was the basic model and the X was the flagship
@@zalden2565 Ah ok I always thought it was just a couple months earlier
The iPhone X was the last time Apple really innovated with the iPhone. I feel like the next real innovation will be from a full under screen face ID system or a foldable / flipable iPhone. Before that all we get is small improvements.
Yeah, hopefully they find a way to put the face id system under the screen, and increase the refresh rate because it's still 60hz in 2024
I always found the "controversy" over the iPhone X"s $1000 starting price to be a bit overblown. Sure, their new top tier phone was now more costly then previous top tier model but it wasn't like they stopped selling all under $500 "budget" iPhone models. You could buy the SE for $350, 6S for $450, and the 7 for $550. (as seen in the graphic at 7:10 in the video). Yes, these two models were older generations but they ran the latest iOS version at the time and had good cameras and screens and such, even if they didn't have all the latest features the iPhone X was delivering they weren't bad phones for a person on more of a budget. Also, lets not forget that the iPhone X's features would come to the budget models in time as the 6S and 7 once were Apple's flagship phone when they were first released (2016 & 2017 respectively).
Only just moved from the iPhone X last month. 😂
What caused the switch?

I upgraded from my IPhone 5 four years ago to an iPhone XR, which I’m still using today..
The XR was a very popular phone so I don't blame you at all.
I had the XR... great device. only thing I didn't like about it is its slightly larger footprint than the X/XS
I had a top of the line 256GB iPhone X, and I had used it to replace my 32GB iPhone 5, which replaced my 16GB iPhone 4, which in turn had replaced my 8GB iPhone 3GS. Since then I’ve had a 512GB 11 Pro Max and my current 1TB 15 Pro Max. Nothing, and I mean nothing - not even the X - feels as good as that iPhone 5 felt in my hands.

Which colour did you have?
@@AnHebrewChild I had all matte black! It was smooth, elegant, easy to use/hold, and had a great camera. I really want to buy one BNIB just to hold onto!
@@39PSIOnTheDaily I agree. I called it the "Vader Phone"
Generally I find that swooning over electronics to be cringey... but for this I make an exception. I find the iPhone 5, especially in black, to be a supremely GORGEOUS device.
And you're right. Easy to hold. Felt perfect in the hand... the screen was just "bigger" enough from the 3.5" iPhone 4/4S to not feel cramped. The black/grey of the 5S always looked geeky and unfinished compared to the perfect shimmer of the "Vader Phone"
That design was dialed in.
Ya know, I think I may pick up an old one just to have as an "iPod" -- good idea.

iPhone X is one of the best looking iPhone designs, crazy how small it is now compared to the new phones. I remember when it felt huge coming from the 6s
Watching this on a 15 thinking I’d like an iPhone X lmao
There's just this one or more reasons that I can't explain which makes me keep my iPhone X (as a sidekick to my current 13 Pro) despite having upgraded
One thing I do miss about the IPhone X-11 was the design. I wouldn't go back because USB-C is so much better but not too much a fan of the IPhone 12/5-esque design choice.
I sincerely do appreciate the effort in these longer videos. Thanks
Why is this video so cropped?! No shots are right. Phil Schiller is on the edge of the video making him smaller than he really is
2027 is probably when Apple will introduce a foldable
I doubt it. Knowing apple won’t do anything impractical unlike Samsung. But who knows they might do a foldable that’s tougher and no crease but also it might not happen.
I loved my iPhone XS Max . . . until it literally blew its brains around half a year before the 14 lineup launched. Trust me, I got my money’s worth on that device - I drove that device HARD every day. Major power user, as it was my only device. Did even have a working laptop. I was very sorry to see the phone’s brains fail without warning, which got the device stuck in a boot loop that I couldn’t fix with the typical fixes. I sent it to Apple for repair, and they said it was totally toast.
I put up with an extra Android someone loaned me until I could get a 14 Pro Max once they were released. I never used an Android as a full time device. Worst time of my life, lol. Been using iPhones dating back to the iPhone 2, lol. Before that, it was a Windows smartphone, and a variety of Nokias and flip phones before that dating back to ‘99.
Wasn’t wireless charging introduced with iPhone 8?

Other than the folds and flips most flagships start under a thousand dollars
Yay! A video over ten minutes!!!
After iPhone X there is no significant change in iPhone. Same as iPhone 16.
I got the iPhone X on launch day and said what kept it from being the ultimate iPhone was it was a little smaller than I liked. When the larger XS came out also got it launch day and held onto that thing for 4 years.
i have the iPhone SE (2nd gen.) and really I like the older models, they always seem better from my view after a few years old, and I'm still attached to having a smaller screen and a home button.
I had the iPhone SE 1st gen. That thing was rock solid. Probably the most dialed in smartphone I've ever owned.
How much usable life do you figure you have left on your 2nd gen?
I agree, I preferred Touch ID. Also those like the iPhone 7 & plus felt more solid and did not have a glass back for wireless charging. I miss the older phones which were smaller and fitted in your pocket. Now they seem to get larger and larger. We will be making calls on iPads soon 😂
Man when this launched I was so blown away. Just the thought of facial recognition in a phone was practically unheard of. And I remember everyone wondering how they were gonna adjust without the home button.
I remember that too. A new IPhone without the home button was revolutionary back then
The last truly innovative iPhone.
By the way. The IPhones are a lot more expensive here. The iPhone 15 cost about $4,000 AUD
They start at $1,500 AUD and go up to $2,900 AUD.

This video is not accurate. The bezeless screen already existed on Android phones, and it was because for years android fans were asking for it.
The iPhone copied that, which is their business model. They let others do it first and then if it works they do it

It is true that the iPhone X set the standard for iPhone design, but for smartphones in general? No. The Galaxy S8 was the standard of modern smartphone design.
Not really because the iphone released AFTER the s8, and the s8 wasnt anything special as it was just following a trend that was followed by many other androids at the time and even the display itself wasnt anything special as it actually had some extremely unsettling notches, also not many modern smartphones still follow the middle placed camera and notches as it really wasnt a good thing
Bro has clearly not been paying attention
I appreciate this new but also old format! Keep it up!
I have an iPhone 12 mini. People take for granted the design of phones now with almost full displays.
Sometimes I look at my phone and still appreciate how far we’ve come - this hardware was only a dream to me back when I used an iPhone 5.
Same here, from almost every generation until the 6 before the X and now 13 Pro while still keeping the X.
Even today in 2024 I still can't get over with how beautifully the iPhone X is designed and feels in my hand to the point I wish it packs the power and storage of my 13 Pro so I won't even upgrade to an "iPhone 13 Pro"
Ahem.. Didn't Samsung s6 line-up already have wireless charging capabilities since 2015? I don't see how the iPhone X was "revolutionary" in that field
Watched this video about the iPhone X on my iPhone X
Wasn’t that the phone that deleted Toilet, Pickle, OJ, and Nickel from Inanimate Insanity II?

Still happy with my XS. Don’t like the look of the cameras on the newer ones. But, I suppose I’ll be forced to upgrade next year when they stop support for it 😢
You're gonna feel a little sad when you upgrade to the newer phones because the iPhone XS and XS Max are the last iPhones with the 3D Touch feature. You don't really notice it when you normally use the XS but long pressing on icons and apps are slower on the newer iPhones and I always notice the slight delay when you do that and it makes me want to hold on to my XS Max as well before they stop supporting it. I want to keep mine at least until 2026, time just flies quickly, dude...
