    Never put anything with Spandex in it in the dryer, even if only 1%, it will be ruined. Heat breaks down spandex and elastic, hang dry or dry flat instead. Tumble drying increases wear more than anything else on all fabrics. Unlike machine washing, where there is plenty of fluid to minimize friction and thus abrasion, drying wears clothes out fast from the heat and friction. I don’t tumble-dry any of my clothing, I just hang it up on hangers a clothesline I put in my laundry room. My fan cuts the drying time in half, everything except woolens dries overnight. I only put clothes in the dryer if I want to shrink them deliberately, or break down the elastic or spandex. Once spandex or elastic are broken down, the garment loses its stretch. I also just don’t wash clothes very often, only when they get spots, grime or odors. We have been in a 20+ year extreme drought where I live (Northern California) and had to severely reduce water use, and I discovered that most clothes don’t need washing after one wearing. After all, we all shower/bathe and wear deodorant daily.

    I buy quality pieces, but at clearance prices. It isn't true that clearance items are only trashy left-overs. In the last couple of years, I've purchased tailored tweed jackets in basic colors, and cashmere crewneck and turtleneck sweaters in navy, black, dark red, camel, and ivory for 75% off the original price. That's how I buy my casual wardrobe, too. Supima cotton tops, cotton cable sweaters, jeans, corduroy pants, etc., at 80-90% off. If you think it isn't possible, look online and sign up for special sale notices. Flash sales online can get you amazing deals. Don't forget that businesses are hurting right now because people aren't spending, so they're trying to attract customers desperately.

    • @shoppingonchampagne
      @shoppingonchampagne  ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely agree with you! When I talk about getting a deal on clothes, it's not because they are clearance or thrifted. It's because people clothes and don't think about how they will work in with the rest of their wardrobe. They tend to be blindsided by the price and not think of the what they can wear with it. Do you know what I mean?

  • @kimberlyperrotis8962
    @kimberlyperrotis8962 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My problem is buying clothes that fit my age-thickened waist, it’s not a matter of being overweight, my waist:hip ratio remains the same at every weight, since perimenopause. My hips were always on the slim side and now, if I buy trousers that fit my waist, they are 6 inches or more too big in the hips. This leaves empty flaps of fabric sticking off my sides. Tailoring is not the answer, garments just can’t be taken in that much on the outseams without destroying their shape and is very complicated to do with the flat-felled seams of jeans. I know because I do tailoring. I just have to buy elastic waists, and often those are too tight, also. This is the main reason I almost always wear dresses, especially knit ones. With skirts, I know if I fit the waist, the hips will never be too tight and if they’re softer, not structured, they will work.

    Modesty has always been a top priority for my wardrobe choices, it has nothing to do with my religion, I just prefer it. It’s so much classier-looking not to have everything on show. I like to show my shape with fitted, but not tight clothing, and not a lot of skin, and I’ve always had a no-visible cleavage rule, since age 12 when my figure developed (it did very early). Men always stared enough at my naturally larger bust without giving them porn views, I don’t like that kind of attention. (A male co-worker once asked me what my bra size was, in front of a group of his pals). It’s difficult because I’m both short overall and short-waisted, so many, many tops and dresses are just too low-cut for me. I often put shoulder darts in them, or shorten the straps, if any, to solve this problem, or wear a scarf, or a modesty panel or tube bra, etc., underneath. I also get blouse modesty pins that look ok (they’re fairly simple, a round bead/pearl shape, and come in sets of different colors), from Amazon, at least they’re better-looking and less damaging than safety pins. And no visible bras or panties, ever! Since my late 40s, I don’t wear skirts shorter than about 3 inches above my knees, either, mid-thigh and shorter skirts/dresses look a bit desperately-trying-to-look-young again, even though I still have great legs (thanks, Mom and Dad’s DNA). My grandma’s legs looked like 18-year old’s when she died in her mid-80s, not a bit of sagging or varicose veins).

    • @edennis8578
      @edennis8578 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not many. Almost everything has been outsourced. Even the haute couture labels in Europe have a lot of their merchandise made in Asia. Some say they don't, but they have the components made overseas and then assemble them in their own country. That's actually how covid started in Italy; they brought in (infected) workers from China to assemble the Chinese-made components. Then they put a label on that says "Made in Italy."

    • @vickster4474
      @vickster4474 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@edennis8578 people have no idea how big the Chinese population in Milan is just for this purpose. It's pretty shocking when you find out that a lot, if not most, of the fashion is by Chinese immigrants, not Italians, in Italy. Say what they want, all the designers have been doing this and cutting corners for years. I was so mad in the 80's and 90's at companies shutting down factories here knowing this is where we'd end up. People could've cared less then unless it was their job that got outsourced. Such a stupid thing to do.

      Shoulders are the trickiest part of a blazer or coat to alter. I found that out by reading the men's fashion book Dress for Success by John T. Molloy. He gets very detailed about how to buy clothes, and what alterations are the most practical. It's an old book, but I refer to it even now. He also had a women's version, but the men's version was an eye-opener for me.

    I'm kinda bothered by all these fashion video makers talking about looking "expensive." I don't want to look expensive. I'm not for sale and can't be bought at any price, which is what "looking expensive." implies. I forget who it was years ago who said "There's a difference between looking rich and looking expensive." We don't want to confuse the two.

    Just a few bucks for a tailor?🤣🤣🤣How about $25 just for hemming? I think you’re behind the times here

      I wanted some alterations, the prices justified donating them out and buying new pieces..🤔😀🙄Expensive not a few $$.

      I guess it's a matter of relative cost. In California, $100,000 income is barely a living wage, so the average salary is very high compared to the rest of the country. $25 to the average Californian is nothing.

      I do. I have classic sweaters and tops that I've been wearing for 20 years. I found my "me" style 30 years ago. I have purchased a few things that went out of fashion within a year or two, but it was a learning experience. One thing that helps the longevity of my fashions is the fact that styles aren't as extreme as they used to be. The 1960s narrow lapels on suit jackets became very wide in the 1970s, and anyone wearing narrow lapels and ties looked ridiculous. That kind of thing is pretty obsolete. Women are insisting on wearing what they like (like skinny jeans) no matter what the designers try to say.

    Back again. What about handbags? I can't pay more than $100 for a bag.

    Good tips, but not reflected in your own wardrobe.

    The main topic should also be, dress according to your body type with the appropriate fitting undergarments.🥿🧥🧣👚👕
