    D'you know, on first watch, "ARGH, MY GLOIN!" got by far the biggest pop from me (as with a lot of the Comments section) but, after rewatching, I think my Quote of the Review goes to wildly underappreciated, "this is the softest nut we have."
    Completely unrelated but there _is_ a decent decaf tea out there: Yorkshire Tea. I can't tell you if it's indistinguishable from real Yorkshire Tea because I've never tried the real stuff but it's at least indistinguishable from a... perfectly nice cup of tea.

    OOC calling out the terrible slapped-in love triangle as "tripe" is giving me life & strength. Every time that happens, it's at best distracting & usually just insulting.

    • @Pineappolis
      @Pineappolis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't _guarantee_ that this is true, but Evangeline Lily did say that she specifically asked if she was just going to be used for a bullshit, slapped-in love triangle before she signed and was told she wouldn't be, assuming it's true, kind of makes it much worse.
      (I know actors traditionally get to read scripts before signing but, with the sheer scale of the production nightmare this thing was, we can only guess at how many major plot details where added while they were filming.)

    I watched the hell out of the Rankin and Bass movie growing up because we had the DVD and I seriously think it's night and day between Richard Boone's portrayal of Smaug and benedict Cumberbatch's.
    Boone might sound like a grumpy old man, but he has such a powerful and booming voice and it totally fits the role of this ancient dragon.
    Cumberbatch just sounds... goofy. Like he never emotes past "I'm a slithery sneaky snake hisssss" despite being the size of a castle.

    • @Pineappolis
      @Pineappolis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can _totally_ see where you're coming from, particularly if you're used to the Rankin and Bass one (the voice acting in it _is_ awesome all round) and I'm honestly not sure I'm going to be able to word my defence of Cumberbatch's performance very well. All that said, you'd be surprised how much of a difference the jump from cartoon to live action makes and I just don't see how they could have made the important bit (the back-and-forth with Bilbo) work in live action with the difference in volume between the two without killing the tension if he'd had the voice of a giant man. I _definitely_ agree he could have gone bigger with, "I am fire... I am death!" but, beyond that I think both versions work very well for what they are.

    2 fun facts about the '77 Hobbit for you Jay!
    - Just like how the Lemmiwinks song was inspired by The Greatest Adventure, the follow-up iLemmiwinks vs Wikileaks was inspired by Down, Down in Goblin town.
    - The voice actor for Gollum in '77 is Peter Woodthorpe, the most recurring actor to voice the character have voiced him in multiple productions across several decades.

    • @MsCholmondley-Warner
      @MsCholmondley-Warner ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peter Woodthorpe’s Gollum is my favourite performance of the character hands down, he was fantastic in the BBC 1981 Radio Adaptation 😃
      PS: PW also played Del Boy’s Dad in Only Fools and Horses and occasionally you can hear the Gollum voice come out 😂

    Ah, a lovely way to end my week off work with a new OSW review and the follow up to my favourite movie review!
    EDIT: Man, I think this one was even better than the previous one and that one I loved. A lot of funny moments throughout especially when the GOW QTE prompts popped up during the Smaug chase scene. I guess V1 is going to be playing The Hobbit game that came out during the PS2/Xbox/GC era for The Battle of the Five Armies review next year then. I think I am looking forward to non-wrestling reviews more so than wrestling ones at the moment because I just love these deep dives and the various bits and bobs that it is provided outside of just the film or video game itself. I know they are time consuming to work on I reckon for yourself and all who contribute but many people like myself appreciate the work and are easily rewatchable and enjoyable.
    I look forward to The Battle of the Five Armies Deep Dive in 2024.

    Great video as always boys. One of my major gripes when I first saw it was I thought the guy playing bard looked too much like Orlando bloom, so I spent most of the movie going back and forth on whether he was playing two parts or not.

      Finally, Miami Bloom gets an acting gig!

    • @Pineappolis
      @Pineappolis ปีที่แล้ว

      He's somehow manages to be the cheap, knock-off Orlando Bloom, too. Bloom was at least genuinely excellent in Kingdom of Heaven, particularly considering the _staggering_ star power he was acting off, but I've seen that other guy in a weird number of movies and he's got... nothing to him. The only movie I've ever enjoyed his performance in was the live action Beauty and the Beast and that was probably only grading on a curve because, Jesus, was there very little else I liked about that movie.

    I have an actual RCA SelectaVision Video Disc version of the 1977 Hobbit animated film. It's one of my prized possessions for two reasons. 1) the obvious 2) one of my best friends found it on a moving job. We used to work for a moving company. He died in August. I love this thing. I should upload a video of it.

    Can't speak for The Hobbit, but it's not uncommon to have one or more blacksmiths on set for these kinds of movies. I worked briefly on Mulan (Bollocks, but also filmed in New Zealand) and they had a whole team of blacksmiths on location actively working alongside filming for alterations and changes.

    I love that Tolkien closed his own plothole before the end of the first book: at the Council of Elrond, someone says that Tom Bombadil could clearly handle the ring without being corrupted by it and the minions of Sauron can't get anywhere near him. But Gandalf points out that because he neither understands what the Ring is nor cares about what it's for, he'd eventually just lose it.

    I did grow up with the animated Hobbit film, and it definitely is the definitive version to me. While definitely imperfect, I feel that it properly captured the tone of the book. A scary and exciting adventure, but one for kids. Not too safe, but not too horrific. Not pretentious or bloated like the film version. And the voices, dear god. John Huston could read a dictionary and I'd listen. Smaug's voice was also incredible, and the acting from Bean and others was on point. Love it.

      There are some good quotes, the ones my friends and I would say to each other back in the 80s and 90s was the abbreviated little "sudden truce" speech when the armies come together. You know, the one where these characters all show up with the explicit intent to kill each other but then IMMEDIATELY become BFFs when Gandalf says that there's a greater threat? "Oh great elf king, my truest friend and ally"! Fucking serious bro? "But of course! O noble king under the mountain, your people are like brothers unto mine". Double face turn!

      @@OSW funny enough, with the animated version I would have liked to have an "extended edition" with maybe 5 extra minutes to add some more connecting tissue to the story, like right at the end Gandalf just casually mentions that six Dwarfs died and I'm like, wait what, can I get a little more on that?
