The U.S. government has A LOT to learn from the Chinese one, about how to manage a country successfully for the well being and quality of life of its people. Many Americans suffer a lot financially under Capitalism. They simply don't understand that Capitalism is what they should channel their frustrations at, rather than at one another, or at China or Russia. Under Capitalism financial crises are created every certain number of years, it's not a stable economic system. The Capitalism approach that is supposed to bring a trickle down economy, has been proven again and again not to be working. As long as so many Americans continue to vote for the two mainstream political parties (Republican and Democratic), both which are aligned with the extreme implementation of Capitalism in the United States, the country will continue to endure financial hardship caused by inflation and other adverse outcomes of Capitalism, such as huge inequality. The U.S. government (and many of its people) thinks it still manages / controls the world. It no longer does ... It's time for implementing Socialism in North America, similar to the one with Chinese characteristics that's implemented in China.

My job has a union. They voted on a raise for everyone this past summer but we're still making $3 less per hour than what's needed to afford the bare minimum cost of living in Milwaukee. I'm 36, been working since I was 18 and this is the first job I've been at that has a union. I'm used to getting raises based on how good of an employee you are. Hi Prof. loved this episode on unions. Please can you do a more in depth episode on unions, like TUCs if you have them in USA, as we do in uk. The political side of unions, how they are almost forced into the political arena to secure human worker rights - what is their involvement in lobbies? Funded + monetary supported by what or whom beyond worker membership fee. Thanks for this insightful episode. Also is it poss you can do some kind of comparison inc historical between evolution of UK +USA unions, Lab Party compare to the origin, development, struggles in USA Union movement. Inaccurate accusations in UK that TUC are “fat cats”, when we know who the real fat cats are! Can you include nationalisation public services & union’s involvement in this battle. Rail is on its way back to public by LABOUR party st w/ the *BILL: Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Bill 2024-25*. The Transport & rail union is powerful & a voice for all working ppl, led by the formidable MICK LYNCH (you could invite this person on here?) NLRB chose by the Pres.?!? WTH. TUC is voted by its members, of all diverse unions. PM or government has nothing to do w that otherwise what’s the point? Hence Thatcher’s battle against TUC. TUC recently voted at a conference for Palestine, BDS, every strategy inc sanctions on the ZRegime. thx prof. 💕💕
Perhaps we could think of more ways to introduce wage protectionism into the private sector, instead of just unions. Which are great for some, but not everyone. Small businesses, especially ones that enjoy state protectionism (liquor, lottery, cigs, gas, etc.) could be operated as cooperatives, with different financial models for ownership and control, and for managing pensions and savings. The amount of employment taxes some of these large corporations gathers seems to beg political representation. It seems this revenue stream is being leveraged politically already, it should be directed towards the benefit of the employees, in my opinion. There's been a technological revolution, and all kinds of different financial agreements are now accessible, that weren't accessible before. The opportunities for democratization are there, but it takes a little creative thinking on behalf of regulators to get the recipe right.
The country I was born in, Argentina, organized and hit with general strikes as professor Wolff explained. The occurred in the period after the '55 coup against Peron, because there's a Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT) there that conglomerates most different unions. It's a Union of Unions, and when they were more together declared several general strikes against certain military governments, that did last until '83, with several short periods of democracy in between since '55. I was a young man there then, and I can tell you they are impressive. The country literally stops. As there's no transportation people can't go to work, and can't be fired. One military president fell because of one such strike, and they all forced dialoguing with Unions. Unions militants were very important during all those, and it's no wonder that among the 30,000 declared missing people due to the Videla dictatorship (1976), which were all murdered by the military, more than half of them were Unions militants.
The relationship between labor unions and political power can sometimes be exploited in ways that undermine laws and government policies, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While labor unions are traditionally seen as advocates for workers' rights and important players in promoting social and economic reforms, their influence can be manipulated to weaken democratic governance, subvert established laws, or prioritize specific political agendas over broader national interests. In many LMICs, political actors may align with powerful labor unions to gain support or strengthen their hold on power. By granting unions special rights or privileges that override existing unit policies or legal frameworks, these political leaders can ensure loyalty and secure electoral support. This practice can create a dynamic where unions have disproportionate influence, effectively disrupting the balance of power and compromising the ability of the government to enforce uniform policies. Such a scenario can result in policies that cater to the demands of union leaders or their political allies at the expense of the broader public interest. This use of labor unions as political tools can lead to a number of issues. For one, it fosters an environment where special interests are prioritized over fair and impartial governance. When unions are granted rights that enable them to bypass standard regulations or policies, it creates inequities among workers, businesses, and sectors. The overriding of unit policies can lead to inefficiencies, economic distortions, and a reluctance to implement reforms that are essential for national development. It can also lead to corruption, as political figures may use union support as leverage to negotiate favorable outcomes or secure political gains. The situation can be particularly problematic when unions engage in actions that disrupt the economic or social order, such as strikes or protests that are backed by political motives rather than genuine concerns for workers. While collective bargaining is a legitimate right, when political influences drive union activity, it can lead to unnecessary conflicts, economic instability, and policy gridlock. In LMICs where resources are already scarce and governance structures may be weak, this can stifle progress, exacerbate social divides, and discourage both local and foreign investments. Addressing the misuse of labor unions for political influence requires strengthening the legal and institutional frameworks that govern labor relations and political activities. Ensuring transparency, promoting independent oversight, and protecting the integrity of government policies are essential steps. It is also crucial to create a balance where labor unions can fulfill their role of advocating for workers without becoming instruments of political manipulation. Ultimately, a healthy relationship between labor unions and political power should be one that supports fair labor practices, promotes social equity, and upholds the rule of law, contributing to a stable and just society.
The perfect solution is to declare that Canadian Postal Workers have abandoned their jobs, prohibit them from employment in Canada, and allow private shipping companies (UPS, FedEx, etc.) to deliver all mails, packages, freight, etc. It's a swift, simple, and permanent solution that impoverishes thousands many of whom will be forced into a life of crime whereby they may be imprisoned and force into hard labor. Therefore, the government benefits, and by that virtue, all Canadians benefit.
What do you say about Robert Reich claiming that most of the American's debt is held by the richest Americans ? I always thought that the debt was owned abroad like China.
USPS and State Educators (from ALL 50 states) it’s time to organize INDEPENDENT of the unions and its “leadership” bc literally these are the last remaining institutions where the GENERAL PUBLIC HAS OWNERSHIP. Think of it as owning stock in the nations postal service and educational institutions (bc the taxes we pay make it ours). If private interests are successful in convincing the public (we the people) that they’ll “manage” these institutions for us- making them “better” and more “efficient”- we will have ZERO VOICE (private business operates behind closed doors) and ZERO CHANCE of ever owning such valuable “shares” in anything like these institutions again. It’s the Alamo and it’s time to draw a line folks.
Absolutely 👍! And the combating of these problems must begin at the local levels. It’s a national problem (which make it seem overwhelming) but “stop measures” and “defensive lines” can be erected and fortified at the most local of levels. Start working on gathering folks in your communities.
Horse shit. The consumer has no say over government monopoly and every bit of a say in the private sector. I can’t choose to go to another competitor and NOT pay for the schools and the USPS even as they both turned to shit.

In order to break the system, workers must often resort to the ultimate arm they have, that is to strike indefinitely. For that, they must prepare to lose their jobs collectively and in solidarity. Will they?
A lot of people think that politics and economics are beyond them... they don't get that politics is just group decision making, and economics is, in large part, the politics of money. If what is done affects you, you deserve for any group decision to be fair in how it affects you, if it doesn't do this for pretty much every member of society, then calling it a society is wrong... the society is broken and the ones not treated fairly have no responsibility to follow it's rules.
I love this content, but I think there is a huge "iceberg" in the way that is being ignored: Soon AI and robotics will take even this power from the working class, its only a matter of time. All this perspective Professor Wolff brings is great, but I can't help but feel like its dated, that it's missing the fact we are already in the early age of AI and how quickly this new age will establish itself.

...and then, absolutely everyone joins a union (starting at birth) and they demand more pay and benefits, etc.! Who pays for all that? (Do some math; be careful if just kicking the can down the road). The answer is quite simple if truthful; we are all doomed. Pain and war, incoming. Everyone gets a hug; take care of you and yours!

Unions in theory are extremely useful if workers show solidarity with each other and understand the issues. But because they do not have money while the employers have lots of money in theory, the union leaders are often bought by promotion or other means by the employers. This is how the unions become very weak or even agree to conditions that are less and less favourable to the workers.

Do they know of the 1970 Postal Strike? This wildcat strike, which involved more than 200,000 postal workers, led to the reorganization of the Post Office and significant pay increases and improved working conditions...
No, there doesn't. Occupy, BLM, Antifa, they all have the same problem: they're disorganized. Grass roots does not mean spontaneous, undisciplined, & rudderless -- at least, it doesn't have to. If we want this country to change we'll need a revolutionary party with a clear Marxist ideology, the support/participation of the unions, & a discrete structure of leadership. We don't need another Occupy. We need another Black Panther Party. We need another Bolshevik Party.
We print and spend the money, despite our rhetoric that says government in the economy bad, then we'll funnel the money into our offshore bank accounts, then put the onus on you, with high interest rates, (except for the suburban white middle class, who get forgiveable loans) to go find a way to turn a profit - capitalists.

The labor movement lacks public support and solidarity as far to many represent more privileged workers in a position to hold the economy to ransom for middle to upper middle income workers. Those earning far less fall farther behind as costs rise to cover those wage increases. Unions should be restricted from striking for higher wages if they make more than 4 times the minimum wage. In that scenario unions may return to their roots and fight for the lower income workers whether unionised or not. They need use their power and influence to raise the minimum wages. Represent their working brothers and sisters rather than just dues paying union workers paid far better. This is what would create a labor movement with public support and solidarity. If those higher paid union workers want more the need to increase the minimum wage should be a precursor to their ability to demand more. Under this scenario a general strike is far more likely. Not just minimum wage but other labor laws that harm all workers from organizing or other unfair practices as to benefits and rights.
How many us workers are getting minimum wage? In 2023, about 1.1% (approximately 789,000 workers) of hourly paid workers in the United States earned at or below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. How much has CEO pay increased in the last 40 years? Since 1978, CEO pay has increased dramatically. According to the Economic Policy Institute, CEO compensation at the largest 350 U.S. companies has skyrocketed by 1,322% (adjusted for inflation) from 1978 to 2020. In contrast, the pay for typical workers has only grown by about 18% during the same period

Americans are poorly educated, mainly geopolitically isolated, and lacking in curiosity about the wider world.
Actually, it is a shame for the economy that you have to talk about a minimum wage. Every person should be able to live on his wages. Companies that can't pay for this actually have no place in the free market.

I agree, having a brokerage advisor for investing is genius! Amidst the financial crisis in 2008, I was really having investing nightmare prior touching base with a advisor. In a nutshell, i've accrued over $2m with the help of my advisor from an initial $350k investment.
I’ve been down a ton, I’m only holding on so I can recoup, I really need help, who is this investment-adviser that guides you
Stacy Lynn Staples is the licensed advisor I use. Just search the name. You’d find necessary details to work with to set up an appointment.
Thank you for the lead. I searched her up, and I have sent her an email. I hope she gets back to me soon.

Hi Prof. loved this episode on unions. TUC recently voted at a conference for Palestine, BDS, every strategy inc sanctions on the ZRegime. thx prof. 💕💕
Thanks for this probative video

Build union power with a labor party to take on the bosses in the capitalist government.

I have been saying this for the 20 years since I have been out of college. The middle class, the working class, are tapped out
Rich should come out and bust a rhyme over that intro music some time 😎.
What do you say about Robert Reich claiming that most of the American's debt is held by the richest Americans ? I always thought that the debt was owned abroad like China.
The Greedy did this to this country...
Healthcare workers as well. HCA employees specifically. I'm but I'd advise that ALL workers need to unite.
Absolutely 👍! And the combating of these problems must begin at the local levels.
It’s a national problem (which make it seem overwhelming) but “stop measures” and “defensive lines” can be erected and fortified at the most local of levels. Start working on gathering folks in your communities.
Please note that Joe B. kept the same postmaster. A disgrace to the Post Office and the country.
Horse shit. The consumer has no say over government monopoly and every bit of a say in the private sector. I can’t choose to go to another competitor and NOT pay for the schools and the USPS even as they both turned to shit.

Trump will crush the little union workforce left. U said Brics will crush the dollar it’s going up like crazy. Trump told them they could kick rocks. It’s over I’m 😂. People voted not to kick increase the minimum wage in California, I can’t believe that.
As long as the common man and capitalism is in control of the Democratic party, the nation will prosper.
AT LEAST THIS GUY SOUNDS LIKE HE IS MF GENUINE. I DONT MIND SENDING MONEY TO THIS GUY AND I AM FINALLY SOMEONE WHO GOT BRAINS WITH A MICROPHONE.

I love this content, but I think there is a huge "iceberg" in the way that is being ignored:
Soon AI and robotics will take even this power from the working class, its only a matter of time.
All this perspective Professor Wolff brings is great, but I can't help but feel like its dated, that it's missing the fact we are already in the early age of AI and how quickly this new age will establish itself.
That's why Elon is hollering for UBI- he's scared the masses will string him up.
You missed last week’s economic update apparently.
@@need-to-know- I believe I watched it, but my memory is mashed potatoes..
Anyway, regardless of last weeks content, I don't believe it's possible to make any point while leaving this fact out. There is not enough time to get significative change before the shit hits the fan (I mean the impact really hitting hard and destructively)
@@breft3416 I just hope our Elon is not our first overlord. Though it would be fitting to humanity to have such a pathetic individual at the very top.
@ I recommend last week’s episode with guest, RJ Escow. I also recommend the one about AI, that Adam Conover made a few months back. Edit: there are 3 of those: The ACTUAL Danger of AI with Gary Marcus, The AI Bubble is Bursting with Ed Zitron, and A.I. Snake Oil, two scientists discuss.
...and then, absolutely everyone joins a union (starting at birth) and they demand more pay and benefits, etc.!
Who pays for all that? (Do some math; be careful if just kicking the can down the road). The answer is quite
simple if truthful; we are all doomed. Pain and war, incoming. Everyone gets a hug; take care of you and yours!
If you are not allowed collective bargaining, you are a slave.
You’re comparing non-union workers to the hell of slavery? That’s a little sick.
@@Nemesisnxt I see alternatives to what Neme... says, (like worker co-ops as an easy example here) but implying that groups moving in the direction of an evil shouldn't be compared to the evil moved towards, kinda endorses the movement toward that evil... and that is kinda sick.
Last month the Usps city carriers reached a tentative agreement for a retro active 1.3 % raise for 2023, 2024, and 2025. When will they finally decide to strike again? Do they know of the 1970 Postal Strike? This wildcat strike, which involved more than 200,000 postal workers, led to the reorganization of the Post Office and significant pay increases and improved working conditions...
Professor Wolff is the best!
No, he is a lying ideologue
THERES NEEDS TO BE A OCCUPY WALL ST PT 2

I get paid more than minimum wage, and I’m non-union. Why on earth would my employer do that?
SOCIALIST AT THE VERY LEAST!!!!
The U.S. government has A LOT to learn from the Chinese one, about how to manage a country successfully for the well being and quality of life of its people.
Capital is quickly learning to manufacture intelligent Slave Labor.

Until Americans as a whole can be taught social history, basic economics and civics things won’t change. Americans also need to stop reacting to unionism, socialism and movements for social equality as if they were an open door to COMMUNISM!! Americans are poorly educated, mainly geopolitically isolated, and lacking in curiosity about the wider world.
Actually, it is a shame for the economy that you have to talk about a minimum wage. Every person should be able to live on his wages. Companies that can't pay for this actually have no place in the free market.
That’ll encourage new start-ups. Good plan.
