    Thanks Alex. Just recently found out that also being to detailed on painting a beard is like with the ear too distracting and looks graphical. I like your style and clear explanation during the process, just like with the portrait you did in john Singer Sargent style. Keep up the great work. Cheers from Amsterdam.

    The ear is shaped like a Figure 8. Most noticeable from the side, but once you see it it makes easier to see from fore-shortened perspective. The ear is transparent and glows when back lit. The ear wax also determines how light reflects. And like sensory anatomy, there is greater visual evidence of blood in that region. Eyes, eras, nose, mouth there is more visual evidence of red in the flesh tone. The ear hole is direct center of skull when viewed from side.

    Thank you for this excellent demo. You mentioned to be careful that the painting of the ear could become too graphical. Is that the main difference between a portrait and an illustration? Please explain if possible what other qualities might make a portrait become too much like an illustration. Thank you very much.

      The main thing that makes images appear graphical from a purely technique technical perspective, is too many lines and too many hard egdes. Not that appearing graphical is necessarily a bad thing, some realist artists have a quite graphical style of painting, Felicia Forte springs to mind. Some Illustrators of have a very painterly style, like Dean Cornwell or NC Wyeth. Then there are all the other aspects of picture making that go beyond technique, like colour harmony, composition, choice of subject matter etc which accomplished fine artists and Illustrators both need to excel at. So there is a lot of cross over between fine art and illustration. Therefore you could argue that the main difference between portraiture and Illustration is a choice of subject matter? In that a portrait your subject is a real person and an illustration is an imagined scene, even if you're using a real model as a reference like an actor?

      I was think of doing the eyes next, but maybe I should do the nose? As really it anchors the other features. I always to the bridge of the nose, before I do the eyes and the bottom of the nose before I do the mouth.

    hey this is totally unrelated but have you had a chance to use michael hardings new pyrrole red in any of your paintings? i was interested to hear what you think about it as a more economical red on the palette since youve recommended winsor red in the past.
    thanks again for another wonderful video in the meantime!

      I didn't know MH has started doing Pyrrole red, so I haven't tried it yet. Winsor red definitely works as a cheaper alternative to cadmium red. I'm generally not of fan of Windsor and newton, so it's good news that MH has started doing it and it appears to be a similar price. Though the place I normally by paint from still appears to be waiting stock for MH pyrrole?

      @@SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting oh thats too bad, i hope they get it soon! i order if from blick here in the US and they keep a pretty consistent stock of it. i would definitely describe it as a much more potent and maybe a little bit deeper fraternal twin to MHs cadmium red. as soon as i tried my first tube i had to order it in the 225ml though, i absolutely love it. its got cooler more purpley undertones than say an orangey cadmium red light so those warmer shades might be a bit harder to reach with it however. id love to hear what you think in the future if you are able to get your hands on some!

      Are you getting an error message that says "500 Internal server error"? Rather worryingly, the whole Patreon site appears to be down. Apparently Patreon isn't the only site. I hope they fix it soon.

    hi, what colors are you using for massing?

    • @SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting
      @SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This painting was done with just three colours Titanium White, Tranparent Oxide Red and Ultramarine Blue, and darks that don't contain white are a mixture of Oxide red and blue. More red if they're warmer, or more blue if they're cooler.

    I like your channel , but think you don't want to have paintings that look like instruction manual paintings. The painter has to discover it for themselves.

      He's painting with an incredible technique. It's a textbook example how to do this. Very rarely will you find someone working as efficiently and methodically as this, and it's a privilege to learn from him. Brilliant stuff.
