    I feel like this goes to prove that if you do want to get your SO into MTB, you DO NOT put them on a crappy bike. You want them to ride a bike that contributes to the experience and doesn’t make it unnecessarily frustrating.

      I have upgraded the bike, to 1x11 XT groupset, with SLX brakes and SID suspension, now she cannot stop riding.

    • @fastdreams
      @fastdreams 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@luongk88 Exactly. I'm barely an occasional hobby trail rider, but I like nice equipment. However when a good mtb costs as much or more than a proper MX dirtbike, I have to laugh. One thing I keep asking myself is, what equipment did the riders of 10-20 years ago have? What kind of riding were they able to do on that crappy old tech? For someone like me, that isn't chasing time or position, I have to avoid the hype. True entry level today (like the 1300 bike I just bought) is probably worlds better than the higher end stuff from 10 years ago, which was then good enough for some crazy pro level riding. I get it, if it is your passion and you ride constantly and maybe even race...then yeah you need the equipment to be competitive.

    Paul, I'm such a huge fan of this whole series of videos with "not so expert" riders you've been doing... I think youtube gives all of us a false sense of what a MTBer should be like and maybe some of us feel obligated to be all "pro" all the time, and it's so cool to have a reminder that not everyone knows all the things and does everything right. It makes me feel okay about not being a super pro guy, and I hope I'm not the only one.

    How times have progressed ... used to ride a 15.6kg 160mm travel Cannondale Moto (26'er) with DH tyres and a 1x9 (non clutch) 32t chain ring and a large 36t cog on the cassette .... climbing decent climbs and being amazed that you actually made it.
    Now my 140mm travel 29'er trail bike that weighs about 2kg's less is rocking a 46t large cog on the cassette and I love it and could not live without it :P

    That wheel trueing by sound is an awesome tip! Wheel building is the only thing I haven't conquered on maintaining my bike, this is good info for when I do attempt it.

    Pretty much a brand new bike for 1500 cdn? Pretty good. Think it's time for the 2016 spark to get a refresh. Damn you Paul! I'll be sleeping on the couch for a month after this 🤦

      you can buy a new trail bike for $1200 and you can have 2. Or sell the old one and buy a newer and better bike entirely if you have the extra &$1200

    • @SeanAnthony2025
      @SeanAnthony2025 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@deniahmetaj 😆 better bike for 1200 than my 2016 Scott Spark for which I paid over 5k for? The wheel set alone is worth over 1200. Not knocking those who have to but I don't need a budget hardtaiI when I have 3 bikes all worth over 2k. That is the worst idea I've heard yet. Refreshing my bike for 1100 with a full Deore groupset (not just drivetrain) is a way better option.

    Hey, i love biking and i do it for a living. I deliver food for a living 5 days a week. When i am not i do bike rides to different trails in tornado.
    I have a walmart gravel bike which had cheap wheels, tires. Had bar end index shifting and chinese rear derailleur which sucks. It has a 1x9 drivetrain. I really like taking it to the trails so i did a few upgrades. New rear wheel with a cassette instead of a freewhee but only 11t-28t as I couldn’t afford to wait 6-8weeks buying at AliExpress or pay 100-150$ for a 10-46t on Amazon. Then i added sensah brifters and some nice bartapes which work really really nice. And finally added cable actuation type hydraulic brake calipers and finally added compressionless housing all around.
    Recently the drop handle bars slip on jumps, the bottom bracket is really bad and creaks and doesn’t move freely. The pedals are really really gunky inside so dont move. Wheels and disks are all out of align. Bar tape wasn’t done on point, theres things stuck inside the frame. The rear derailleur doesn’t have a clutch so its really bad. Front crank is bent. Brakes rub. And finally the hub is silent which i hate also it doesn’t move freely.
    If you wanna try doing a gravel bike for a change and wanna help out a fan then consider this comment. Ps i live in toronto.
    Anyways, love your content and love seeing you brings bikes back to life.
