Love your video. As a Hungarian who has lived abroad, I think that Hungary can be a tough country for foreigners. You guys are very good ambassadors for Ghana, though :)
"Racism" here does not mean hatred of black type person(like in the past), it simply means protecting the country, preserving the composition of society, culture, lifestyle, so it is not directed against the black race, everyone knows that black skin doesn't matter, but in Budapest if you see too many blacks, and you experience a bad glance towards you this not a "qualifying look" against the person but rather a instinctive or conscious protection of the country and culture(and protection of all cultures of the world against mixture) but since migration is quite closed here, there aren't many blacks, so there aren't many bad glance either, more of an inquisitiveness, curiosity, and everyone knows that Budapest is a cosmopolitan city, so many foreigners live there, only peoples from the countryside are surprised when they visit Budapest, almost nowhere live blacks in the countryside i think if you speak Hungarian and show that you are Hungarian in every level, only black, e.g. the Hungarian football team on your T-shirt, etc... and you don't behave defiantly, dont dress provocatively, anti culturally, then they will definitely never look at you with a bad eye, starting from myself, I consciously don't look at blacks or Asians a little bit, don't want that them feel or see that I'm very curious of them, they should not feel like they're being stared at,but they should feel naturally like they're one of many, possible,i think 90% of people in Hungary think this way

I have to say, the ,,mind your own business" thing is most true in the cities of Hungary. But in villages and smaller towns (100.000 inhabitants isn't small in Hungary) you can usually see the ,,everyone here knows everyone" types of communities. Budapest is basically our only big city the second biggest being Debrecen (my home town) with roughly 200.000 inhabitants. But i grew up outside of Debrecen n a village, and i often visited my grandma, who even has a farm. That lifestyle represents most of Hungary, and that's what many are proud of!

Welcome in our country. I am happy people like you can come with this stipendium. 🙂 About local communities: I live in a village, here they know everything about you and people visit around a lot in surroundings - but it is in the process of changing and in cities (even cities smaller like Sopron) you do not get to feel this. In villages some people even dislike this part if they are not used to it. From your talk it looks like though that this is like that even in cities in Ghana maybe.
Yup, happens to a lot of us :) I also moved to Hungary at some point, thinking I'll stay for a couple of years... then some decades later I'm like DAMN boy :)))
The alienation is only true (somewhat) for Budapest. Rural Hungary is a totally different beast. People are friendly and caring... there IS a sense of community. Budapest caught the "metropolis" bug maybe lately... also, it depends where you live inside Budapest. We had wonderful neighbors while living there, a superb community in the XIII district... in the II. district, not so much... so it really depends where you live.
Hungary is a country right at the middle of everything, and everything around us want to tell us which direction to change, while we just want to keep our culture as it is. And we are pretty tired of this, but usually we don't hate anyone, especially without reason. I'm glad you take the stares in stride, I think it's an Eastern European thing and has nothing to do with racism. We have a lot of people of colour living with us but mostly from the Middle East, so it's still pretty rare to meet black people. I can tell, if we are staring at a black person, that's because we find them beautiful but of course we are too shy to tell them, so we end up awkwardly walking away while hoping they don't feel offended or something. 😅
@@LB-ci8pzI think it can be both. It's a rare sight so of course people are wondering why did they come to our country but they look fascinating, often really beautiful as well
Personally perfectly think the same as the original comment, I often like people who looks interesting for me and as I rarely see black people in real life, I often really find you beautiful! But I always hope my little shy "stare" doesn't get noticed and make anybody too offended or something.
It is true, foreign friends, don't mess with the BKK lol Also, Hungarians can be distant but people in Budapest and bigger cities are different than people in the countryside. If you visit a family in rural Hungary prepare for pálinka shots and lots of food experience lmao
The Mongol empire in 1241 then Ottoman empire made it so Hungary had to invite people to the country to survive , many disasters happened in the country of course people are not so outspoken.

Yes, we do be like this. We actually know how to speak english but we try to avoid it because we kinda have this anxious/fear feeling that we might make a mistake and thus makes ourselves look stupid or cringe, like, we are trying to be strict to ourselves to be perfect, make no mistakes and it will be good. Of course not everyone of us thinks like that, some of us have a lot of confidence and has no problem to talk in english, even if they make mistakes :D
I'm pretty sure it was me whom you asked about the hot peppers/paprika. Spar at Szigony street right? How crazy is that I've found this video by chance! Imagine the look on my face after listening 20+ minutes to a random youtube video, the story begins to get waay to familiar. Like I remember something like that happening to me :D
I traveled in Africa for 6 months. I don't want to state what countries, because my experiences were not so grate. I did meet some very superb people, however the vast majority were quite racist. At one time I was walking with a private local tour guide and a couple of local guys started shouting why a white guy is walking with a black woman. At other times the military or the police were shaking me down for money. There was a lot of disrespect towads me as well. I'm a typical hungarian guy, reserved, quiet and polite. I treat people the way I want to be treated. I prefer Asia and Asians for the above reasons .
Ha-Ha! 😂 The reason of starring a black person in Hungary is only about curious about somebody who is totally different and not seen before often. 1. We live in a free/open democracy just an only ~30years 2. Before hungarians lived in a closed border country under a Communist regime for ~45years after The WWII, so was no any migration in or out 3. Before we had no any colonizing activity during the history. We mostly get mixed with nearby indo-european nations. So starring is only about your unique and dirrenet appearance. 😊 A natural curiousness, especially in the countryside. In big University cities or in Budapest, The case is more comfortable. I know It could be uncomfortable to you, but you do not need to fear from us. 😊 I wish you luck and great times here!
as a hungarian im so happy you liked being in our country! ah and if you want to find more open people leave the big city and visit some of our countrysides.

👍👍👍Isten hozott gyönyörű hazámban.A jó embereket szeretik a Magyarok. Tanuld meg, hogy mi nem nácik vagy fajgyűrölők vagyunk hanem rasszisták. De csak két rasszt ismerünk.Jó embert meg rossz embert. I often think about Béla the fourth when I face discrimination. People with good will are welcome, simple as this. And in my eyes when someone states, swears that they are Hungarians and they mean it, understand what it means, they are Hungarians.
Hungarians are careful. It comes from our history. It is necessary to prove that someone is worthy of respect or love. If you don't have this, you will feel the distance of the Hungarians. There are liberal Hungarians who behave in a way that is seen in Western Europe. But for the majority of Hungarians, this is hypocritical. How much does skin color matter? The first impression is that the person is a stranger. Second impression, whether it will be or not is up to the stranger. But because of this, Hungarian culture remains what it has been for 1,100 years.
Hungary was never the same for a thousand time. The composition of the country is one of the most diverse in europe. Hungary was always the melting pot of european nations, Germans, Slovaks, Croats, Romans, Serbs, Turks, Gipsies, and not to mention tens of nations who were got melted into being Hungarian like Kun, Jász, Ruszin, avar, hun, kun, úz, besenyő, böszörmény, jász, székely, tót, rutén, bolgár stb ,zsidó
@@Horizontal77 Mentallity has also changed a lot. Everything changes all the time. First Hungarians were pagans, then roman cathlics, nowadays, mostly atheists. Not sure how could you prove that Hungarian culture remained the same for 1100 years. Do you still drink horse milk spirit, and live in a tent? Even our writing has changed to the latin alphabet.
@@leventelajos5078 Nagyon egysíkú a magyarokról alkotott elképzelésed. Az avarok akik csatlakoztak a magyar törzsszövetséghez (500 millió) Manicheisták voltak, vagyis keresztények. A magyar törzsszövetség (500 millió) harmada szintén Manicheista volt, mivel Nagy Károly támadása során igen sok avar menekült a Magyar Törzsszövetségbe, ők segítették később a magyarok bevándorlását a Kárpát medencébe. I'm at the part where you are talking about community,it is a capital city, come to Szeged you will feel community. It is a small country but still in terms of human interactions there are huge difference between East/South vs North/West. Latter is colder, more distant. I love that in Szeged people are very understanding and supporting. But still never compare a 2 million habited capital to a smaller community
Stipendium Hungaricum only exists since 2013 but similar scholarships has existed for at least 25 years but probably more. And Sopron has a population of 62k not 12k.
girl, sopron aint a small town internationally sure, even compared to budapest its small, everything is small compared to the capital ,but sopron is rlly what we’d consider a larger city hell the whole country’ population is 10mil😆 a 60k smn city is big

I'm happy that you have mostly positive experience. My fellow Hungarians can be pretty racist, especially against people of color, although liberal cities like Budapest and Szeged are better. The community is SOOOO much stronger in villages or even in smaller towns. But I was born and raised in Bp, so I like it this way. I have my privacy. :) Please make a shop in downtown with imported food! :) I would love to try it. BKK inspectors are always triggered because they are abused a lot, don't earn much and tbh only those people work there who can't find other job so they are .... cough ... not the most intelligent or kindest ppl. Most Hungarian ppl are afraid of talking in English and are introverted.
Hungary is surrendered by many countries who can to some level understand one another’s language. Hungarian is unique. Language defines major part of cultures . Even those who speaks English to a a good level would not be able to relate to you guys because of the lack of experience with the rest of the world . I was born there lived there until age 19 , now I’m 41 and this has not improved much since I was a young fellow. However despite the difficulty of the language, if you stay, learn it please properly. Hungarians are warm , helpful and willing to be there for you. In some countries it doesn’t take much to break the ice. In Hungary you might need a chainsaw. But there is a way for sure. All the best to both of you !
Tbh Hungarians can be different in different places, especially if you look at Hungarians in Budapest and at Hungarians outside of Hungary. I live in Serbia as a Hungarian cus where I live was Hungary and we are pretty different from people from Budapest cus of the cultural impact Serbia has on us. Im sure its the case with other Hungarians that are in the same situation. For exemple you guys metioned that they keep things for themselfs, well not here. Especially elderly people, but when Im at a bus stop or smth they always start talking to me ab their whole life. We do keep lots of things to ourselfs, but def more open then people in Budapest. My prarents friends moved to Hungary and they said that thry find ot hard to make friends there cus they keep everything for themselfs, they ask things from you,but avoide saying stuff ab themselfs. (Not saying everyone is like that tho) Its also so funny to me when I tell Hungarians (from Hungary) that Im from Serbia cus they are all like "wow your Hungarian is so good" and Im like "yeaah I am Hungarian actually" (but its kinda awkward when I accidentally start speaking in Serbian to strangers cus Im used to it,for exemple once somebody opened the door for me and I thanked them in Serbian, they were prob confused) But also the accents and words can be different depending on where you live, like a few villiges from me Hungarians use words I have never heard of in my life, like yk made up word, its very interesting tbh. I have classmates from a bunch of places cus music high schools are not very common and my city happens to have it,so people come to my school from all the parts of voivodeship. We learn ways of saying this from each other and new words from each other all the time.

Well 99.99% of the hungarian people have only issues with those coming here for the sole purpose of being a freeloader, everyone else is welcome, so are you. And try to learn the language, I know it's hard but still :)
Hey, welcome here! People with positivity are always welcomed! Hungary was always a melting pod of central Europe during its 1,000+ years. Avars, Slavs, Kuns, Puns, Bulgarians, Gipsies (came from India), Germans and so on. That made our women so beautiful and our food culture so rich.

Noooo. We stare at them because they are so out of place and not because they are beautiful. And wondeting what the hell are doing here...
@@ayko_gn Beauty is very subjective though.
It is true, foreign friends, don't mess with the BKK lol
Also, Hungarians can be distant but people in Budapest and bigger cities are different than people in the countryside.
If you visit a family in rural Hungary prepare for pálinka shots and lots of food experience lmao

As a hungarian, i really love it! this channel is so underrated!!!
Glad you enjoy it!
I'm pretty sure it was me whom you asked about the hot peppers/paprika. Spar at Szigony street right? How crazy is that I've found this video by chance! Great video! :-) Have a good time in Hungary!
Thank you! Will do!
1. We live in a free/open democracy just an only ~30years
2. Before hungarians lived in a closed border country under a Communist regime for ~45years after The WWII, so was no any migration in or out
I wish you luck and great times here!
as a hungarian im so happy you liked being in our country!

Sopron is in fact a city with a population of over 62K people.
@@leventelajos5078 You talk about DNA, I talk about mentality.

28:00 I love your attitude about racism. Refreshing. In the eyes of the beholder.
I loved it guys! Yeah we are conservatives for sure because of our past and we are raised this way, it's generational.
"Eben koro no no" 😅😅. Asem oo
(Not saying everyone is like that tho) Its also so funny to me when I tell Hungarians (from Hungary) that Im from Serbia cus they are all like "wow your Hungarian is so good" and Im like "yeaah I am Hungarian actually" (but its kinda awkward when I accidentally start speaking in Serbian to strangers cus Im used to it,for exemple once somebody opened the door for me and I thanked them in Serbian, they were prob confused)
But also the accents and words can be different depending on where you live, like a few villiges from me Hungarians use words I have never heard of in my life, like yk made up word, its very interesting tbh. I have classmates from a bunch of places cus music high schools are not very common and my city happens to have it,so people come to my school from all the parts of voivodeship. We learn ways of saying this from each other and new words from each other all the time.
