    My dear old dad was stationed in or near Cairns. He was USARMY. Batt B 99th mounted field artillary. Horse power! They had 37mm and 75mm pack howitzers. The Army wouldn't allow them to bring their mules to the Pacific. Afraid they would get sick. No wonder they came from Camp Carson Co. Right at the bottom of Pikes Peak

    Hey Chig! Thought I better sub. Been enjoying your Aussie trip adventures, detecting spots I can't detect in my own country! Those coastal artillary sites are all up and down the Eat coast of Australia, Including a bunch at Sydney, which still didn't protect Sydney Harbour in WW2 as a couple of miget japanee subs got into the harbour and torpedoed a ship. Of course we got both , onewhich is now out the front of the Australian War memorial in Canberra,the other which was wounded sank and was discovered only not long ago on the NSW north coast.Our war history is interesting. Most people in other countries and even Australia don't realise we were attacked by the japanese in WW2 a few times.

    The naval 155mm gun can fire further than the standard Army 155mm Howitzer. For the naval version was much bigger and they could add more white or green bags of powder. I believe it has a range of 26 miles where as the Field artillery could only get a range of 14-18 miles in WW2. Today the ranges are much farther for both.

    The 155 MM "Long Tom" M1 had a range of about 14 miles.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And Yamato's 18 inch guns had a range of 24 miles.

    • @ShellyAnn1a
      @ShellyAnn1a 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The 155 mm WW II Coastal artillery could fire a 95 lb (43.1 kg) round, with muzzle velocity of 735 m/s (2,411 FPS), out to about 17,700 yards (16,185 m)(10.1 miles) that was using a 25 lb (11.3 kg) powder charge. Most coastal guns were referred to as 6 inch guns, the 155 was equivalent of a 6.1 inch navy coastal gun. Do not believe the Long Tom was ever used as a static coastal gun. Most coastal guns had seen prior service as naval guns aboard ships. Would love to have seen photos of the gun emplacements while the guns were still mounted. - - - //es//A Navy Veteran, 1967-1978

    We have a grim reminder of WW2/nazis here in NE- Finland: the railway of death, because pows and other prisoners built it.. It were a narrow gauged- railway , wich is today used as a gravelroad to houses, farms and loggingroads. There is several prisonercamps + cemetaries along track and stupid relichunters have been digging the camps. They haven't backfilled any of digholes..
