I have to say fair play to Alan, he's got patience. I love ya Cody but you have a dominant personality and Alan is obviously an intelligent man, he does very well to play second fiddle even though he knows his stuff too, which is fair enough considering this is your channel. You're a good combo.
Watching this as a student, with nothing to do with Wildland Firefighting, simply doing homework, I found how enjoyable you two are. I hope to see more videos with both of you.
***COOK KIT TIP*** It appears the cup WS. is using is the snow peak 600 and does not fit the isobutane canister. The Snow Peak Trek 700 will fit the 100g canister inside with room to spare for a micro stove such as their LiteMax or GigaPower stoves. Other bonuses are that it comes with a lid and the hot lips are still usable.
Peanut m&m's to snack on, I carry them backpacking to snack on the chocolate gives you quick energy and the peanuts give you long term energy and just having some candy to munch on can change your outlook on anything
Honestly, what makes this video so absolutely irresistible to just keep watching is your enthusiasm for the job. You have analyzed the job and necessary to get it dialed in for maximum speed, comfort, and portability. I love that!
I always find these carry videos awesome. I don't fight fires but I always get ideas to add to the pack I do carry in my. I do a lot of driving and have stopped to help people in need on the side of the parkway. My pack has been handy several times. Thanks for the videos.
Ha, when i saw that rubber band come out i new immediately that it was a broccoli rubber band. Those suckers are tough. I always keep those things when cases come in.
what a gift you both are giving to all of us, but especially to those who do firework...or want to get into doing it. Thank you for taking the time to share your bags, your information, your helpful hints. great job!
Thank you. I am most impressed by the high-level of integrity of character that you demonstrate throughout all of your videos. In this video you only further impart this fact by the company that you keep as it is obvious that your friend is also a man of solid character. I asked my wife to watch this this video with me so that I could remark to her that these are the type of men (people) that I wish would roam the Earth in abundance. The dynamic that you share with each other in this video is a delight to watch. Thank you, again. Keep safe.
"I'm serious about my coffee" Yes Cody, so am I. Even as a college student i sacrifice convenience to grind my own beans and brew a good cup of coffee. Great videos, Ill definitely keep this in mind! God Bless!
Just finished watching your entire War Bag series of vids. Great info. One suggestion for bug repellent... Have you tried fresh garlic. It may sound funny but you can pack a few cloves in a sandwich ziploc bag, you cut off about a 2mm/3-4 fingernail thick piece and swallow like a pill 2-3 times a day. Flies, mosquitos, chiggers, black flies, biting gnats - they all hate it. With a heavy sweat load you may need to go a bit heavier on the dosing, and you have to experiment a bit to see how much is right for you, but it works real well. Even tics don't like it. Also, for more immediate needs, cut off your dose "pill", swallow, and then rub the fresh cut stub over exposed skin and on clothes until your sweating enough to keep the critters away. Simply cut off the "dirty" rubbed stub and continue to eat off that clove or use separate cloves for oral vs. topical applications. This was one of those military tricks I picked up years ago and it works great. Maybe not on everything and always... But, if it adds a bit of kick so you use less DEET, and get the same or enhanced, non-toxic, non-caustic, effects... Again, great job and thanks for sharing so many great vids.
Hey Cody! I am seriously thinking about Wild land Firefighting as a profession but i know next to nothing about them! would you make a video giving me the details of what you do, what schooling is needed, and other general stuff? Thank you and keep up the awesome videos!
The Navy uses the same system as your "task books" but we call them P.Q.S. or Personnel Qualification Standard, or JQR, Job Qualification Requirement. There are thousands of them, there's a PQS for everything, some guys have even facetiously made PQS for relieving ones' self, you can find it a la google.
Cody- I camp at Red river Gorge in Kentucky A lot and although i do not have the same brand cookware as you, i had a similar issue, try turning the fuel can over, worked for me, not sure if it will work for you or not, but its a thought!
Cody I will have to say about the TP. you should switch to wet wipes. if TP gets wet it's useless. if wet wipes dry out, Just add a little water to rehydrate.
+Wranglerstar. maybe it's just a personal thing. I have butt wipes stashed everywhere. backpacks, both vehicles, first aid to clean wounds, I actually keep them in my mtn bike storage with my tubes and tools. you just never know.
I've had TP ruined in wet weather or by hydration packs. A buddy of mine wears 2 pairs of socks just in case nature calls, but that just dirty and not required if you just pack about 10 wipes.
A lot of this is the same my Norwegian red cross/mountain rescue/emergency response friends carry! Also, incidentally, a lot of them are women, it's a pretty even balance - so if there are any fellow women watching this video and thinking this kind of thing is interesting, I recommend getting involved with the Red Cross. Less lumberjacking, but you still get to be badass and save lives in the wild.
Epic series .. love this stuff even though I'll never get to do it! Drag this out as long as possible Cody ... you and Alan make a fun team! (I do miss Mrs W and Jack of course)...
I work for the company that built the 6x6 that was pulling the pickup up the hill. I tested and inspected most of the Hawk Extremes produced and you will not find anything that beats it.
Flip that gas canister around and it should fit in that titanium cup. I have the same set up and very serious about my coffee as well! It probably won't sit flush with the stove in but it is designed to fit.
Cody. I was so happy to hear Stranglehold during the intro. I couldn't stop grinning. I've just never pictured you being into that kind of really edgy music. Well done. Also, ignore all these people commenting on your relationship with Allan. You're obviously incredibly real friends and no one should get to judge your friendship based on 60 minutes of filmed material. I'm loving these videos.
hey cody check out the jetboil line of stove its similar tou the one you have but the canister fits in the cup and the stove locks to the cup for heating, I can't keep count of the number of times I almost knock over my stove... you can also have a coffee press (serious about your coffee ;) ) stored in the cup with a pan adapter, a feet thing to stabilize the stove even more, a suspension system so you can hang the stove. not to mention that the lid has a bunch of holes to drain water and a hole to take sip of coffee or even soup but, the best is that there's a heat conservation sleeve (cold coffee is the worst) and you can have that sleeve in your favourite shirt pattern ;)
great series WS! can't wait for part 3....4? i think there are a lot of us who really like to see all the wildland firefighter gear, tools, transportation, and tricks etc? keep up the awesome videos! just wanted to say thanks
I have absolutely no reason to watch these videos, I don't live in a forest fire zone, I have no intent to go into the field, I just find emergency packs and work packs entertaining to see how they are packed and what's in them.
Re portapotty (6mm, approx): I even bring a couple rolls of tp to social gatherings in state parks-- everyone looks at me like I'm crazy/gross, but by the end of the day they think it's the Best Thing Ever to bring to a potluck picnic, heheh.
on the subject of the deep mountain house bag instead of cutting the top off rotate the bag and cut the side out. that from an experienced MRE consumer lol
You may not know this but Oregon and Washington have the highest number of port-a-potties, per capita, than any other state. They are all green and brown, and they are LITERALLY EVERYWHERE.
i enjoy your channel and have been a subscriber for a couple years, i was interested to hear about your task books for wild land firefighting we have something similar in the navy for a PQS to get qualified and having a organized approach to get qualified serves you much better.
I cannot believe this is a 3 part series.. I love all of your videos but I do like how Casey is still inspiring you. I watch every one of his videos just like yours. I see your helping guys getting into your trade, that's how you started.. keep doing what your doing. but 40 minute videos aren't in my schedule. I've got a wife and kids too.. so I won't be able to be as dedicated if there is 3 very long videos on one specific subject at once... my wife already knows your intro tune.. I just can't justify this subject 30-40 minutes three days in a row.. with two guys googling over what they wear to work... there once was a saying, long story short... maybe
Excellent kit lay out and explination guys. I don't do wild land fires, I am ex military, from teh Infantry side. and campout all the time. I also sell kits. I love wool. I read a couple of years ago, that the US Army was looking into using Wool again due to several factors. fire proof as good as Nomex. More durable than the cotton, and NYCO materials. stays warm when wet. Better insulation. Doesn't fade liek the other materials. Anyway, the Smart wool and Marino wools are great. light weight socks, underwear, glove liners, and watch caps. You can wear it under your uniforms and will add another layer of protection. I have the same NorthFace kacket you have cody. My first real winter jacket when I moved to Europe 20 years ago. still works, but I am found better that are lighter, and more compact. Some of the gear that you have to buy or gain through your experience it's very helpful when you have it because then you can do a lot of other things a lot of the times we had to have over 5,000 ft of rope with us at any given time and it has to be able " to be used on a chopper or be repelled down the side of a heel or to be able to pull stuff or to be used to pull stuff
I have to say fair play to Alan, he's got patience. I love ya Cody but you have a dominant personality and Alan is obviously an intelligent man, he does very well to play second fiddle even though he knows his stuff too, which is fair enough considering this is your channel. You're a good combo.
That sounds much more confrontational than I meant.
+Paul Keating a.k.a. LEADER [ as in trailblazer ]
I want to see Alan as a regular guest. They work together very well in this format
Er.. May have something to do with This being Cody's Show.
Yeah last video he wouldn’t let him talk at all! I thought it was kind of funny though. Perhaps Cody just wants to impress a friend he admires?
Watching this as a student, with nothing to do with Wildland Firefighting, simply doing homework, I found how enjoyable you two are. I hope to see more videos with both of you.

I love the guest's sarcasm
"Does not like it in his business."
Hey Mr. Wranglerstar if you don't want to get your hands sticky while eating the mountain house open it sideways. That's what we did with MREs
Peanut m&m's to snack on, I carry them backpacking to snack on the chocolate gives you quick energy and the peanuts give you long term energy and just having some candy to munch on can change your outlook on anything

One of my scouts once asked me where the nearest toilet was, we were on day two of a three day expedition through the Yorkshire dales national park.
I LOVE the way you two interact with each other! It's obvious that you are friends! God Bless you both!
Ha, when i saw that rubber band come out i new immediately that it was a broccoli rubber band. Those suckers are tough. I always keep those things when cases come in.
"That's so precious" favorite part of the whole video. My co-workers think I can pack a bag. I have nothing on you guys.
Cc to vvff cc f
Cool
Check out a "Frog" poncho very light weight. I use as additional layer when it's extremely cold.
what a gift you both are giving to all of us, but especially to those who do firework...or want to get into doing it. Thank you for taking the time to share your bags, your information, your helpful hints. great job!
These two videos are among the best you have ever done Cody.....I really like the respect that you show the fire service. Thank you
Thank you. I am most impressed by the high-level of integrity of character that you demonstrate throughout all of your videos. thanks for sharing. enjoyed seeing alan again. love broccoli rubber bands, they are so tough, keep them myself
"I'm serious about my coffee" Yes Cody, so am I. Even as a college student i sacrifice convenience to grind my own beans and brew a good cup of coffee. Great videos, Ill definitely keep this in mind! God Bless!
Jesus just buy Folgers...
So…. Buttons on ice cream and see if they stick hahaha that was hilarious 😂
para cord tie down "idiot cord" everything, that was one of the first things i learned in the army
Learning terms & specializations I never knew existed. Many thanks.

So ? Did you become a firefighter
Your "seriously considering it" yet you know nothing about it?
Lol you must be a teenager... Good luck tho haha

I got the Sony cam also. (comes in black) great resolution and image stability and view range!
Great vid. Some times I have a hard time keeping up with what I have in my pack and where it is!

Sooo.... buttons on ice cream and see if they stick.
Please don't state our mountain name. Thank you! mrsw
Sorry. I'll delete the comment.
Which video did I say it on? I can't seem to find it.
Flip that gas canister around and it should fit in that titanium cup. I have the same set up and very serious about my coffee as well! It probably won't sit flush with the stove in but it is designed to fit.
Of course Cody doesn't know what a broccoli rubber band is...;-)
+BigJ8k Right?!

Great video gents. Not sure if I heard right but it's 'gobsmacked' like someone smacked you in the gob (mouth). Godsmack is a rock band.
you guys remind me of my buddy Dave and I, when we get ready to go on the AT... I also save my broccoli rubber bands, they're awesome for camping/bags
great subject matter, thanks for sharing..
LoL......you two should do a stand up routine......you play off each other so well. Great video.
if you get over heated. take ammonium nitrate/fertilizer and water for making a insta-cool pack.
Sweet opening sequence!

I luv this video, so casual so relax..
This is my modern day version of Mr Rogers neighborhood.. 👍😁
Still love the DC-10 Air Tanker footage, and the Helo drop footage. Laughing like little kids at each drop. Love it.

Digging this series. Thanks fellas.
Loving these longer videos Cody!
Where is the seasoning kit for the FSS burrito skillet? (burrito cooking with your shovel)
Their is a smaller fuel container from jet boil that would fit in your container i use it for hot lunches on kayak trips works great
great series WS! can't wait for part 3....4? i think there are a lot of us who really like to see all the wildland firefighter gear, tools, transportation, and tricks etc? keep up the awesome videos! just wanted to say thanks
Very interesting to watch you both talking about that which you are so passionate about.
I have absolutely no reason to watch these videos, I don't live in a forest fire zone, I have no intent to go into the field, I just find emergency packs and work packs entertaining to see how they are packed and what's in them.
Okay, great stuff coming from the professor and Gilligan.
"That was a good 12 minutes" - six minutes into the second video
Re portapotty (6mm, approx): I even bring a couple rolls of tp to social gatherings in state parks-- everyone looks at me like I'm crazy/gross, but by the end of the day they think it's the Best Thing Ever to bring to a potluck picnic, heheh.
Great videos, nice to have the dynamic of you and alan and to see you having a bit of craic. Is there another installment to this series?
So, helmet is a Bullard? I have the same one in black. I'm going to put T.P. in it...
Great video!
you are so right it is the best Job in world greetings from the uk
on the subject of the deep mountain house bag instead of cutting the top off rotate the bag and cut the side out. that from an experienced MRE consumer lol
nice share, I like the intro...looks like you are well prepared with your war bag and still get comfort..love that portable coffee maker that was nice
I work in the coal mine, and carry my T.P. in the top of may hat too. I had a new guy (19 yr old kid) ask If he can "go out to go potty"

You may not know this but Oregon and Washington have the highest number of port-a-potties, per capita, than any other state. They are all green and brown, and they are LITERALLY EVERYWHERE.
I'm laughing hysterical watching this and listening to the banter. I need to hang out with you dudes!!
i enjoy your channel and have been a subscriber for a couple years, i was interested to hear about your task books for wild land firefighting we have something similar in the navy for a PQS to get qualified and having a organized approach to get qualified serves you much better.
As i was watching this my moms friends old house burned down, i hope all of the families made it out.
Hey Cody.. we put our duct tape on our long MRE spoons to make them more durable and ridge!!! Food or thought
Alan's good at gently teasing Cody. Takes the edge off Cody's style.
I think alan is a great addition to the channel, you should do more videos together!
I always carry one to two pairs of extra socks! Fresh, clean, dry socks can make you a brand new man!!! (Army and fire experience)
stranglehold, the perfect song for this video.....
"Does not like it in his business" made me laugh haha. I can relate to that though.
First proper tools, now proper spoons!
Your intro to this video is awesome . I seen that fire truck come pulling in with that big American flag , I got pumped .
I go through a log of ear plugs... who makes the ones you said were the best?
I cannot believe this is a 3 part series.. I love all of your videos but I do like how Casey is still inspiring you. I watch every one of his videos just like yours. I see your helping guys getting into your trade, that's how you started.. keep doing what your doing. but 40 minute videos aren't in my schedule. I've got a wife and kids too.. so I won't be able to be as dedicated if there is 3 very long videos on one specific subject at once... my wife already knows your intro tune.. I just can't justify this subject 30-40 minutes three days in a row.. with two guys googling over what they wear to work... there once was a saying, long story short... maybe
Wysi wipes....look'em up. Better than TP and many uses, Smaller than TP also.
The gas canister is designed to go in the other way up I think
the guy with the rifle over his head was Full Metal Jacket!!!
Also, it's down filled, so I always have that everywhere. And when wet looses about 30% of it's protection. I just got a really great sythetic insulated jacket for 65 bucks, and it's super compact and lightweight.
Jetboil French Press is great on the fire line!
Thank you very interesting
Hey Cody, I have not been a long time subscriber but I have loved getting caught up on your videos because they are so refreshing compared to most of the videos coming out since all of the TH-cam awful new regulations. I cannot say enough CHECK OUT THE SUUNTO SMART WATCHES. That would be a great video and I think you would really appreciate what they bring to the table.
Especially the traverse alapha. It would definitely fit your expectations of tools.
Hey! Were those Harbor Freight safety glasses? Those are my sunglasses, too. They work well, and if you lose them or scratch them, you don't care because they're only a buck on sale. Well, $1.29 now. Inflation.
Also, is Ted Nugent a subscriber? Love the Stranglehold at the beginning (even though that wasn't Ted, but someone doing a cover, with a note here and there changed).
I love watching your firefighting video they make work even harder to become a better firefighter than I am know thank you for making these videos
What are the “military” ziplocks again? What are they called/where can they be found?
I had o stop watching when your mate broke out the WORST coffee in the world!
11:36 i would love some candid 'bear grills' camp fire stories...
titanium is very poor at transferring heat compared to other metals.
I'll soon reach the choir and testify. I could not walk the second day without wet wipes.
wow, so cool!
can you do a video on your opinion of puttin a lift kit on a truck
That stuff coming from that aircraft into the trees was that Agent Orange.
No they don't drop toxic herbicides that cause birth defects and cancer.
They are dropping a fire retardant of some kind.
I thank you for you're feed back
